Chinmei might possibly have been the absolute worst bad guy in this series so far. And that's worst as in the most evil, and the most sadistic behaviour. It might be the juxtaposition between his cheerful way of behaving, and the way he does vile shit.
Since I can't remember most of this series, I'm also wondering how much shounen escalation in terms of powers/fights there's going to be, because it is getting wild at this point.

La révélation sur ce qui est arrivé à la soeur de Mahiro arrive enfin. On se doutait un peu de ce qu'il s'était passé. Kyo prend un visage de plus en plus humain tout en restant le mec sombre qu'on connait bien.

Today’s post is on Samurai Deeper Kyo volume 18 by Akimine Kamijyo and it is published by Tokyopop. As it is the 18th in the series you need to have read the previous volumes to understand the story. This is one of my favorite covers for the series. It has Kyo and Yuya on it; Yuya looking pretty and Kyo looking all Kyo like but it is just so beautiful and I think that it reflects their relationship too perfectly. There is strong language, lots of violence, and implied nudity in this volume; older teen and adult only. The story is told from third person god point of view with character’s thoughts added in for plot and character development. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- After his battle with Saishi, Akira collapses! Bontenmaru can carry him through the Second Gate, but there they must choose between two doors… Meanwhile, Izumo-no-Okuni searchers for the same mysterious jewel that Kyo seeks. But then she runs into Taihaku or the Five Stars, who makes her an offer she can’t refuse…

Review- Back story about what happened between Akira and Okuni. Side character development and who really killed Mahiro’s sister. So much happens in this volumes lots of plot development but sadly very little character growth. Okuni is the only one who gets growth because of her interaction with Taihaku. She is still trying to help Kyo get his body back so she has gotten into the Mibu headquarters and has some fun. Then we get back to the exciting parts. Mahiro’s sister was murdered and for years Mahiro thought that Kyo was the one to kill her. But now we discover the truth and more fighting ensues. So Kyo gts really angry and gets real in this fight. Very dramatic with emotional tension and of course really great art. I love how detailed Kyo's eyes are. With him his soul really is in his eyes.

I give this manga a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Chinmei shows just how freaky deaky he is in Samurai Deeper Kyo, Volume 18. His smiling facade belies the terrifying menace he truly is. The creep has immense power and zero heart - a lethal combination.

In this volume, the truth behind the death of Mahiro's sister is revealed. There is a touching moment between Mahiro and Kyo that also weighed heavy on the heart. This scene made me kind of fall in love with Mahiro. It's gripping and bittersweet.

These last few volumes has shown a different side of Kyo that proves he may not be such a cold-hearted arse that he's perceived to be. I'm enjoying the growing complexity of his character beyond being a blood-thirsty killer.

The characters in this series get more and more likable as the story goes on. I originally despised Izumo-no-Okuni, but find myself actually liking her now. One of the characters I'm most looking forward to learning more about is Taihaku. As leader of the Five Stars, you shouldn't be rooting for him. But I find him to be one of those characters that can't be so easily categorized as good or evil, but lingers in the shades of gray. I love his big heart, but unfortunately having such a kind soul means he's most likely doomed for death.

Akimine Kamijô is freakin' hilarious. I feel like she's gotten comfortable in her skin and has thrown in a lot more humor. I love the part where Benitora, Sasuke, and Mahiro stumble upon Hotaru. The humor is so witty. Also, the dynamic between Akira and Bontenmaru is too much fun. Well...anything with Bontenmaru is a damn good time.

There is a fun quiz at the back of the book, Which SDK Character Are You?. I turned out to be an Akira. Bummer I'm bad with Benitoras because he is one of my favorite characters!

Can't wait to read the next volume!

The story is a bit dull when it starts off with Yuya and Kyoshiro. But as you progress, the plot thickens and newly cast members introduced piece by piece make this manga unique and a bit of a masterpiece. There are two main story lines: 1- Yuya is looking for the man that killed her brother and 2- Kyo is searching for his true body to exact his revenge. Every other plot in between just adds fuel to the story and lets you learn of the diverse background of many characters, friends or foes. The story itself was captivating and it is a shame that many people know of this series.

The art style refined over time, giving the battle scenes flaws execution. The each character had their own torments and demons to deal with but I would have to say that certain individuals needed more evolution or better backstory. The end was well received and left no stone unturned.

I have watched the anime adaptation and I don't recommend it. It doesn't do it justice.

Do I recommend:
