This is good starter book for someone to understand the foundation and organic origins of the Progressive Era. As a center-right conservative, I read this to get an understanding of what Progressivism is really about. Surprisingly I agree with some of their (Populists/Progressive) concerns and goals. However, I do not agree with their proposed methods. Progressivism to this reader is the "1.1" or "2.0" version of a governance doctrine which was proposed in circa 1850. THIS READER WOULD STRESS TO OTHERS WISHING TO LEARN ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE ERA THAT YOU MUST READ SEVERAL BOOKS ABOUT IT. What Progressivism is varies material from source to source.I would not trust what you find on the internet, as many sources are not credible and the internet is to fluid. Internet Sites I visited 5 years ago have changed materially in substance. (In this writer's opinion for political expediency) You can read this writer's article based in part on this book here: http://t.co/vkL2o2oKnM I did not read Chapter 8- Progressivism in Architecture, Art and Music. I especially recommend chapters 2 through 4. If you can only read 1 chapter, read Chapter 4: The Social Nature of Man. This is a good discussion of political thinking in the years of the Gilded Age up to WWI, with emphasis on industrialism's negative effect on equality and the economy. There is also good commentary on the literature of those years.
