David Kirk is the creator of children's books that follow the character Miss Spider. Before writing books, he made colorful toys that were sold in hand-painted boxes. He was urged to write children's books when his toys caught the interest of a book packager. It wasn't difficult to figure out what he would use as characters in his stories: his daughter, Violet, had a liking for bugs.

The book eight legs up is the story of a spider named snowdrop who isn't happy with himself. He is uncomfortable with the number of legs he has. Until he learns that each insect is unique its own way and this acceptance brings out the best in it.

Snowdrop wants to join in the big race but her eight legs get in the way so she tries to act like all the other bugs, she tries having two legs, she tries six legs and two wings but every time she falls and everybuggy keeps telling her that she is a spider and she is supposed to have eight legs. Finally with a little inspiration from a photo of her doing ballet she realizes that everyone is good at different things and that everybuggy is different in their own way.

There was a good moral to the story which made it enjoyable.

Little Snowdrop Spider has issues. She thinks she should be like this or that bug to be a good bug at something. Really it's about accepting yourself as is and loving you as God created you. Very sweet.
