OK, and one of few books with Latino child protagonists, but there are plenty of missed opportunities. Reeve plays up one character's poverty, but after description, doesn't address it. The same character is mistreated by the protagonist, with no redemption. Really, other than Lolo, who is motivated by his spider, the other characters are flat. It takes more than a kid saying "homes" every other sentence to develop meaningful characters. I love the idea behind this book and I'm sure upper elementary kids will enjoy it, but I think the author left a lot of possibilities on the table.
