Published in 1992, "The Walk: Stories" by Joy Dayrit is a collection of thirteen character-driven short stories that offer a unique perspective on various aspects of life, ranging from a woman finding the courage to stand up to her neglectful husband to a group of friends mourning the loss of a common friend. Others delve into themes such as time-traveling to meet famous painters, a baroness playing the role of a goddess, and a ballerina's new life and shattered dreams.

One Goodreads reviewer aptly described the stories as having a "soft" openness to their conclusions, often presenting a black-and-white scenario or a yes-or-no situation. That perfectly captures what drew me to them.

Dayrit's ability to present complex situations in a clear and concise manner, while still leaving room for interpretation, is impressive. The stories are engaging and thought-provoking, leaving the reader with much to ponder long after the final page has been turned.

What I also like about this collection is its ability to blend the earthly and the mystical seamlessly. Each story takes you on a journey through different worlds, evoking various emotions along the way. From chuckles to tears, this charming collection is definitely a must-read!

A short story collection about the mundane and not. Here, we will see dull days in a movie house, a priest and his childhood sweetheart, an unano unloading unimportant things, a time-traveling event to meet famous painters, a baroness playing goddess, a group of friends mourning a common friend, a mini thriller, an aswang and a treehouse, and a ballerina's new life and ruined dreams.

These are character-driven stories that usually possess a "soft" openness to the conclusion where the endings are still limited to a black and white scenario or a yes or no situation.

What a book! The Walk: Stories is a charming collection of the earthly and the mystical. In every chapter progression, I felt like an invisible spectator floating through different worlds. Some stories made me chuckle, others made tear up, some left me confused, and most prominently, others made me want to give the characters a good bear hug. Not a single word in this book was wasted, and each one drew me deeper into the narrative. I doubt it isn’t obvious yet, but I’m so glad I stumbled onto this little gem! <3
