Drawing on nearly 30 years of clinical practice, Bannink compiles solution-focused questions and protocols that are formulated to elicit the client’s expertise on the issue(s) that brought him or her to therapy. Categorized for general use and for use with specific types of clients—such as children, couples, and families, and those who have suffered trauma or who might benefit from medication—the questions demonstrate how the precise use of language is an important tool in solution-focused interviewing. Exercises and homework suggestions invite self-reflection and experimentation with the solution-focused model, while case studies illustrate the model’s effectiveness with a wide variety of clients. 1001 Solution-Focused Questions equips clinicians with a toolbox full of ready-to-use approaches, so they’re prepared to provide support as clients find their own way to a better future.
I really tried to like this book, but it's taken me 3 months to read it and I just can't get myself to finish it. At first I was reading every single word, then just skimming, then skipping sections at a time, until eventually just putting the book down. Typically when that happens I give the book 1 star, but it does deserve 2 because it explains the concept of solution-focused interviewing well and provides many examples.
Now the 1001 questions it gives could EASILY be narrowed down to 100-200, they're all repetitive. Examples from the book: 575: How did you manage to come here? 576: How did you manage to get out of bed? 579: How did you manage? 586: How have you manged to withstand ___ for so long?
I read this one for work, and think it would be a great one for any school counselor to read. With the limitations that accompany such large caseloads and the uniqueness of a school setting, solution focused therapy is my go-to technique for the majority of students I meet with.
This book is more than just a list of solution focused questions, it's a great introduction to practicing the solution focused therapy approach. I plan to come back to this often!
I listened to this book, I would agree with the other review about it being repetitive. Also, most books of this kind would offer a pdf handout download through audible, but this one didn't. That would have made it a bit more practical.
