HEMO 10 #1

Only One Way

Rate this book
What is the HEMO10 Virus? This is a completely new disease... It is a hemorrhagic fever... It is a violent and aggressive virus... We do not know where it originated... There is no vaccine or cure... When restrictions on travel between counties are suddenly imposed in the United Kingdom, the residents of York don't worry too much, despite the rumours seeping out via the international media. It's only when a complete ban on travel and martial law is brought in, that people start to panic; and see first hand for themselves just what the world's governments and health organisations have been hoping could have been avoided. For this is a virulant and very sudden pandemic. Survivors in one of the city's suburbs gradually realise just where the disease is headed, and are forced to accept what is expected of them if they are to survive this plague.

If you are feeling a little big paranoid about the Ebola Virus right now then maybe you should save this book for another time......

Restrictions have been placed on travel in the UK as a deadly virus basically turns people into zombies. This is a quick, entertaining read about the lead up to what I'm assuming will be end of the world type stuff. I like how the story is told, though the eyes of the main characters, emails, blogs and news snippets. I loved the islander blogger, he was funny - "Anyway, if it's so awful in Paris, surely you've got better things to do than insult me online."

The one frustrating thing about this book is how it ends, it's very abrupt. Like the book has not been finished. I guess this is intentional but I would have liked some sort of conclusion.

In essence, I was disappointed with this book. It was not completely terrible, because Howard did make attempts to engage with a problematic contemporary society through juxtaposition of city and countryside and a few comments on capitalism. However, I would have liked more characterisation and description to really hold my attention. Really wanted to love it, but I didn't.
