Bondage is not journalist Carl Guttuso's thing. He has no need to tie a man up or beat the crap out of him and call it sexy. No one is doing that to him either-or so he thought. During an interview, the charismatic BDSM Dom, James Pauly, asks Carl to be his submissive lover to learn about the lifestyle from within and Carl agrees to a six-week contract.

James has not been romantically involved since his last sub left when James refused to whip him beyond what was safe. In Carl, he sees a second chance to connect with a man who wants more than the pain James can give him. He recognizes the sexual interest in Carl's eyes and thinks the handsome young reporter will be perfect.

Carl is surprised by the desire he feels for a man who admits to subjugating his lovers, but the intensity of the games they play becomes addictive and Carl wants more much more. James, dismayed by yet another sub's demands for pain, refuses to be rushed. He hopes to keep Carl past their contract, but it may be all he can do to keep him for the six weeks.

For both men, the arrangement becomes a journey of self-discovery that could tear them apart in spite of their growing attraction.

I am fascinated with the creative process. From arts and crafts to writing, I gain a deep satisfaction in making something beautiful. I am an avid reader who carries a book everywhere—and opens it whenever there is a spare ten minutes. All genres interest me as long as romance plays a part. I live on the coast of New England with my husband and son and go to work in my spare time.

It’s nice when you start a new BDSM book by an author you have never read before and find that the acknowledgments include a real BDSM group. It implies that the author did some of her own research and wanted to get to the heart of the story in a realistic manner. It seems like too often lately we get books with these types of plots that are based on reading other erotic D/s books.

I started the book off with a hopeful heart and it didn’t disappoint even though it didn’t give me as much internal self actualization as I would have liked from the main characters.

Carl starts off as a regular Joe with some standard perceptions of BDSM. He says this in the first page:

“Bondage was not his thing. He had no need to tie anyone up or beat the crap out of him to call it sexy. The reverse was also true ~ no one was doing that to him either.”

A few pages in he’s become interested in a D/s couple he has observed at the bookstore and his ease dropping leads him to a potential human interest story. Determined, he strikes out to find out more to write a series of articles.

As he steps into the lifestyle it doesn’t take long for him to “get it” in ways he never thought he would. James tries to bring him along slowly into the idea of Romantic Domination. Newbie that he is, and being rushed into the scene, Carl finds his manly identity challenged when he fails to find his footing in some of the pain related scenes that he and James play. This pushes both he and James to make some drastically bad decisions.

The book suffered for its length. More time was necessary to really grasp the metamorphosis that both Carl as a newly minted sub and James as a determined Dom with little experience in teaching an initiate go through. I wanted more time in both their heads.

The ending came too quickly. It seemed rushed with Carl going from the attitude above to a fully devoted submissive within a matter of 12 to 14 total days together spread out over 6 weeks. Astutely, Carl mentions while he is writing his articles how hard it would be to get it right if he wasn’t actually living it, just observing. I wonder how true that came to be for this author since I feel like we missed some key steps in Carl’s growth and acceptance of the serenity he found in his submission.

I hope that we get a chance to revisit them down the road to see how they turned out. The side characters seem to support more story telling and I hope that was the intent.

Carl is a journalist needing background on a story he’s working on about BDSM lifestyle. Really, though, he’s interested on a personal level. And lucky for him he stumbles onto the perfect (for him) Dom in James who’s willing AND able to drop everything to fill Carl’s every need.

This is a good entry-level book on the genre, for readers new to it. Both MCs are likable and their story interesting if very predictable. I did like how, much as he tried, Carl was not a natural at one thing in particular the two tried out in the playroom.

It was distracting that the author tended to use ‘dominate’ the verb when the noun ‘dominant’ was intended (James was a fabulous dominate.). Else wise, it’s a pleasant enough quick read.

This was a realy interesting story from an author I've never read before.

Carl, who thinks that bondage isn't his thing, decides to do some in-depth research for a series of articles on BDSM. James, an experienced but lonely Dom, agrees to teach him by entering into a six-week contract with him.

The story follows the journey of self-discovery that both Carl and James go through as they discover the connection between them, the joy of the intense games they play together, and, finally, love. The issues between them remain unresolved until the very end, providing an added level of suspense that I really enjoyed.

3.75 stars. A simple story about a journalist who happens to be gay that wants to write a story about the BDSM lifestyle. The journalist is sure BDSM isn't for him, but he seeks out a well known Dom to show him the ins and outs to get the story he wants. Both the Dom and the journalist were likeable characters and I enjoyed how the story played out (even if it was totally predictable).

I could be unkind and give this a lower rating for a number of reasons but the truth is I genuinely enjoyed it.

To enjoy this sensitively written and well intentioned book about one man'a initiation into the BDSM lifestyle you need to do a couple of things:

*go back to a pre-FSOG world before we all knew way too much about BDSM (or maybe that's just me). By virtue of necessity and plot the book is a bit of a primer on how or why of BDSM practices.

*get over the unfortunate use of Dominate instead of Dominant, it doesn't appear on print often, but still annoying and jarring. Also a couple of mentions of "tits", I prefer nipples or pecs but maybe it's a way of the Dom thinking of his male sub as precisely that: a Sub.

On to the book!!!

In order to gain insight into the BDSM lifestyle Carl, a journalist, enters into a contract with James, Chef & owner of a hot restaurant and also a Dominant, for six weeks. Each man starts the relationship for different reasons. Carl is researching a story about a lifestyle he is sure is crazy and could hold no personal appeal for him. James wants to prove a theory about what he calls "Romantic Dominance" by which he means that the gratifications of a D/s relationship are richer if there is an emotional investment between the parties and not the anonymous scene at a club.

Needless to say during the course of the weeks Carl comes to reassess everything he believed about himself in terms of his sexual proclivities and likes and James not only proves his theories but learns that to gain what he wants he must also risk what he fears to lose.

I liked the way the whole story was treated and if sometimes there was a bit of tell and not show or an ABC on BDSM that was okay and justified as a journalistic inquiry.

I liked that though the rug gets pulled out from under him Carl is not a whiny, woe-is-me kind of guy. He feels something new, thinks about, processes it and moves on.

I liked Carl's family and friends. His mother is a superstar and Tony is delightful.

As usual for me the Doms have a higher bar to pass and James to me was the lesser of the couple. He should count his lucky stars that Carl even likes him. Yes he is a successful chef, business owner and caring Dom. However like most Doms in M/M he is the insecure one, the one who wants things without really opening up. Towards the end he does redeem himself in how he relates to Carl and that is probably my favorite thing about this book. It ends not in a hard and fast HEA but rather on an open door to a future full of possibilities and that's the best we can wish for in our own lives.

What a pity that this seems to be the only book by this author because I think there is real potential here. She doesn't make either of these guys a chick with a dick as many M/M books do and thank heavens!

Carl the gay reporter wants to do a piece on Leathermen. His desire to do expose on the BDSM leather lifestyle had me wincing. Would this be good or bad? I am going to end up with a negative BDSM piece? To my delight, this story is done in a very good way and rather hot. James is the Dom showing Carl the lifestyle. It helps that Carl possesses submissive tendencies.

The bargain is 6 weeks, every weekend, Carl submits to James. This is when he learns about what it means to submit and also how impact play works. This story is a great one for New to BDSM readers. It's gentle in it's teaching since it is a new to BDSM learning. There aren't any heavy handed lectures which I appreciated. The budding relationship between Carl and James was also sweet. This was a nice erotic romance.

The only thing that bugged me was the author's usage of dominate. Dominate is a VERB not a noun. Several times she called James a dominate. He's not. He's a Dominant who dominates. Picky yes, but annoying and pulled me out of the story. I recommend this book to m/m lovers who want to try a bit of BDSM.

31%, DNF.

The writing was just so stilted and awkward, with its phrasing, scenarios and even word choices. I mean, it's Dominant not Dominate. The characters didn't develop at all, and by that I mean, we have no establishment that remains consistent. I have no character meat to sink into and the facts that I'm given don't hold up!

I mean, one isn't a big fan of X sexual act, hasn't done is in years, but they do it, and it's glossed over? No inner commentary? No outer? Just wham bam thank you ma'am orgasm? I'm not getting any emotional development at all. Are they just dolls?

To add the unpleasant, we have a male lead named Carl, and all I can think of is the llama named Caaaaarllllllll. Or Jimmy Neutron's bestie. Not ideal thoughts for a "steamy" BDSM novel.

So all that together with some boring sex? Yeah, I'm good.

Thanks but no thanks.

Oh, this was a good 'un! After last weekend in San Francisco at IMsL (my gawd, that was a hot weekend!), my sensory levels are still in that head-space. This book was like my aftercare so to speak.

Carl Guttuso Journalist, free-lance writer for the Boston Herald, writes human interest stories for the Journal, seeking a story, sense of humor, openly gay, also seeking a little action when he can get it, does not submit to anyone, and who apparently does not have a kinky bone in his body…yet

“Bondage was not his thing. He had no need to tie anyone up or beat the crap out of him to call it sexy. The reverse was also true—no one was doing that to him either. He surfed the web. He knew there were people who got off on that kind of thing. He just didn't think they had both oars in the water. Maybe their mamas beat them as children or maybe their history teacher made the Spanish Inquisition sound cool. Whatever the reason, he believed that sadomasochism was twisted.” –New Leather

Oh, I think a change of heart is in order for you sweetie.

He’s intrigued while watching a gay couple (Mike and Seve) discussing books on BDSM at a bookstore. Observing and reading the body language of people is crucial in his line of work. His interest is piqued when the couple started the discussion on rope bondage. He winds up following this couple to the coffee shop, eavesdropping on their conversation. An exclusive, invitation only club comes up in the conversation called Top Men. Carl sees a story forming…He introduces himself and asks if he could do a story on the topic. Next thing you know, he’s got the phone number to the owner of the club.

James Pauly Owner of Top Men BDSM club and 5 star restaurant, Pauly's Point. Romantic, Alpha male, passionate, can talk a good game, warped sense of humor, hittin’ 40, seeking long term sub, observant, fashion conscious, especially in tune to the sensitive areas of his sub.

Carl realizes that one cannot really know a story unless one becomes a part of it. Yeah, a huge part of it. Health tests are done, plans are in motion. Carl agrees to become James’ sub and a contract for six weeks is signed. From Friday to Monday, Carl is James’ sub.

Toys:
rope, cock rings, spreader bars, nipple clamps, butt plugs, floggers, whips, feather dusters, etc. Check.

Pimped out playspace:
St Andrew’s cross, medical table, hooks & chains, padded bench, etc. Check.

Sub wardrobe for Carl (printed assortment):
Scrubs…red peppers, Hawaiian print, leopard spots, camouflage, golf balls, hearts and flowers.
Shorts…moon & stars
Boxers (where applicable)…pink elephants
Swim trunks…SpongeBob and a yellow butt plug. Hah!

Let the games begin!
James has a serious sense of humor, can you tell?

"You are an evil man."

James grinned as Carl sashayed into the kitchen. "I wanted to keep you on your toes."

"You succeeded admirably. I'm never going to be able to keep your friends from knowing I have a baseball bat up my ass." –New Leather

Throughout the book, Carl finds that he is starting to have a change of heart about this whole BDSM thing. Nothing like he thought it would be. His online research to gather extra information could not compare to what was happening to him while spending time with his Dom. This was real. He also realized that some of his RL experiences with his Dom lined up with a few testimonials he’d read online from other subs. That hit home for him. Thing is, Carl winds up falling, hard. But he’s not goin’ down alone. James is right beside him. Sweet!

I liked this book, liked the kink in it (BDSM lite, for me), and liked the way the author brought the characters together. She made it real. Yup. 4 Stars. There are some hot scenes in this book. My favorite is the den scene. That’s a cream-the-jeans moment for me. Dayum!!

“Carl was still standing in front of the closed door when a weight pushed him up against it. Hands untied the string holding the loose camo pants up.

"Keep your hands on the door," James whispered in his ear as he pulled back on Carl's hips to let the pants drop and expose his ass in an obscene pose.

The first touch of James' tongue made him shiver. Just the crease at first, teasing him. He
twisted his torso to look back.

"Eyes forward. Just feel."

He groaned and returned his gaze to the paneled door. His fingers clawed at the wood when other fingers pulled his cheeks apart and the tongue found the puckered little hole hidden there. The wet muscle licked and poked at his opening until he could feel his sphincter loosen and allow its entry.

"God, James." He wanted to rock back as his lover fucked him with his tongue, but every time he tried, the door rattled. He gave up and stood utterly still. It was torture.

He groaned again.

James lightly bit one cheek. "I did not say you couldn't move."

"Susan…"

He heard a chuckle as James pulled his legs further apart to expose the hole without having to hold him open. The tongue returned and James used his hands now to force Carl into motion. The rhythmic rattle of the door shattered the peace of the house.

Carl forgot his embarrassment when one hand left his hip to wrap around his prick. Damn! That felt good. Unable to resist, he moved between the hand and the tongue. His vision blurred as he shot onto James' hand, the door and wood floor,

"Stay there." Carl heard a zipper open a moment before the fat bulb of his Dom's
slicked cock pierced his relaxed entrance.

The door went from rattles to banging as James pounded into him. To keep his head from damage, he stiffened his arms and took the full force of each stroke. It was heaven.

James picked up the pace and his fingers dug into Carl's hips. Two, maybe three, strokes later his Dom's climax emptied into him. He kept his arms straight to hold himself and the man resting on his back upright. He would stay that way as long as James needed him to.” –New Leather

This was interesting…

Carl is a newbie with hidden submissive desires behind his tough guy ego. James is a calm calculating Dom who holds back from fear of repeating the past. Neither of them are truly honest with each other once the line is crossed. Neither will tell the other how they truly feel. Both is willing endure the pain of separating once their time is up.

I love the depth that was put into describing how Carl and James ended up with the issues they have. Their relationship is so powerful inside and out and i feel like it blew them away. Nobody was ready for it.

Before there was Fifty "ick" Shades of Grey, there was New Leather. Now I'm bias because I've known Debra since our Myspace days (yes, I'm dating myself), so I got an advanced copy of the book and loved it.

Look, it's not your typical vanilla literary write. It's a fun naughty piece and I personally loved everything about it. As fan of subversive/transgressive fiction, I was thrown into the story and wished it never ended.

Good gay erotica is hard to find sometimes but this is one of them that I definitely would read again.

Carl has always dismissed the BDSM lifestyle but an overheard conversation seems to get his interest. He decides to take up the challenge to try it before he writes about it. James issues the challenge and he's not ever sure if it will be taken. I think both been are surprised by their feelings and reactions to each other. This story was more powerful then I expected. This was a really well written story.

The blurb sounded interesting, but as soon as I started reading the story I knew, I wouldn't really enjoy this book and eventually discontinued. The writing felt stilted and the characters came over as one dimensional and cartoon-ish sometimes. I didn't quite get how the dom knew by looking at a picture of an unknown man that this would be his ideal sub. Come on. I am all about instant attraction but I like a bit of reality, too. DNF

After starting off with a wonderful story from this publisher, I had some up and down experiences. But this one was a home run. I loved these characters and the plot pushed me to the edges of my comfort zone while leaving me quite turned on and involved in the story. Really glad my friends recommended this and I hope to see more of this author. Really nice stuff.

This was a pretty good story, but I wish it had been longer. The sex scenes were very short and not very detailed. Neither were the BDSM scenes. I really liked some of the secondary characters and would be interested in reading their stories. And I loved Carl's mother!

The Word is DOMINANT!! (not Dominate) and they are NIPPLES or PECS (not tits)... those 2 things drove me nuts and took me right out of the story. Also it read much longer than the 90 pages it claims to be.

Nice story although in my opinion it needed some editing to smooth it out. My main issue with it however was the use of the term Dominate instead of Dominant. It was very jarring to read that.
