This story follows Nannabah as she is first given responsibility to of the family's sheep herd to tend by herself. The reader gets a glimpse into the Navajo culture. The book has a theme of growing independence that is common among many children. Children can relate to her as many have felt what it is like to be alone and in need of a friend. It shows commonalities that all children share regardless of what race or culture they are from.
