Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254 – 184 BC), commonly known as Plautus, was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. His comedies are the earliest works in Latin literature to have survived in their entirety. He wrote Palliata comoedia, the genre devised by the innovator of Latin literature, Livius Andronicus. The word Plautine refers to both Plautus's own works and works similar to or influenced by his.

That's how to revise the mythology and etymology joyfully! The birth of Hercules and his disabling status as a demigod - which will justify the 12 labors undertaken later to earn his stripes as a divinity in his own right - are here illuminated by a tasty vaudeville in which Plautus does not hesitate to include the king of the Olympian Gods in the role of the closet lover. We also learn who Sosia is and why he gave his (proper) name to this perfect double we all fear meeting one day.
As a faithful woman - unfaithful despite herself, Alcmene's character is full of finesse and even emotion. A little marivaudesque even, the victim of a fool's game from which she escapes thanks to her apparent good faith.
In short, we have fun because Plautus never breeds melancholy and remains the undisputed master of the joke, a little advanced but not too much.

Una commedia piacevolissima, che s basa sullo scambio di persone con equivoci. Dei contro umani di cui farsi gioco, Giove e Mercurio contro Anfitrione e Sosia. La lettura è briosa e divertente. L'onore della donna, il rispetto degli dei e l'amore fra i coniugi la fanno da padroni. Giove ha calcolato tutto e Mercurio è scaltro a seguire il padre nei suoi capricci. Chiude la commedia il deus ex machina che risolve tutto felicemente. La lettura rende ma credo che il coinvolgimento in questo caso visivo sarebbe più efficace.

Leí esta obra gracias a mis estudios. Latín es una materia central para quienes perseguimos la docencia en lengua y literatura, y aprender la cultura es tan importante como aprender la gramática.
Como cualquiera, soy muy reacia a leer libros por obligación. De entrada voy con mala predisposición y esa abominable sensación de que voy a odiar cada segundo de lectura. Muchas veces mis prejuicios terminan siendo validados, pero en ocasiones me llevo una grata sorpresa y acabo por disfrutar la historia que se me mandó a leer. Anfitrión, afortunadamente, forma parte de este último grupo.

Leer obras teatrales tiene sus pros y sus contras: por un lado, son de lectura veloz y dinámica; por otro, la falta de presentación de personajes (y, muchas veces, la abrumante cantidad de estos) puede prestar a confusión y frustrar al lector. En el caso de Anfitrión contamos con la ventaja de que –al menos la inmensa mayoría– ya conocemos a los personajes que nos encontraremos.
Aquí se retrata el mito de la concepción del gran Hércules (también conocido como Heracles) y su medio hermano mellizo Ificles. Alcmena, la madre de estos, es engañada por Zeus (o Júpiter, en la mitología romana), quien tomó la forma de su marido, Anfitrión, para acostarse con ella. Así, la mujer termina llevando en su vientre a dos niños de distinto padre.

La historia, si bien dramática, se viste con ojos de comedia en manos de Plauto. A decir verdad, en varias ocasiones me sacó risas y sonrisas y me entretuvo de principio a fin. La traducción que leí fue de gran ayuda, además, porque es bastante moderna y no cuenta, como otras obras antiguas, con infinitas cláusulas subordinadas rebuscadas ni con un vocabulario anticuado. Ese es un inmenso plus, ya que las composiciones que cargan con siglos de antigüedad tienden a abusar de estos detalles que generan frustración en sus lectores.

A pesar de ser una obra teatral estrenada casi dos siglos antes de Cristo y de presentar la violación y cosificación de la mujer (cosa que no sería pasada por alto en la actualidad), se trata de una reliquia. Es una de las composiciones más antiguas que sobrevivieron el paso del tiempo y, como tal, nos ayuda a tener una mejor perspectiva de las sociedades de antaño, con sus cosas buenas y malas (los romanos y griegos no se destacaban por ser particularmente aliades de las mujeres).
Como siempre digo, no puedo juzgar las obras viejas con la misma vara que juzgo las contemporáneas, así que elijo hacer caso omiso al desafortunado retrato que se hace de la pobre Alcmena. Eso aparte, es una de las poquísimas comedias que, genuinamente, me han hecho reír.

Muy graciosa, metaliteraria y con sutiles reflexiones sobre el tema del doble y de la conciencia del yo. Teatro romano pensado para ser representado, creo que he encontrado mi estilo. Y eso que se han perdido 300 versos, una pena, justo cuando se encontraban los dobles...

Alcmena es la mejor (plot twist yo no sabía que paría a Hércules aquí LOL). Algunas líneas de esta perfecta. Solo queda llamarla MADRE:

(Cuando le dicen que habla demasiado descaradamente) "Es justo que la inocente sea valerosa y que hable confiada y audazmente".

(Cuando se enfada y le dicen que exagera, que no sabe tomarse las cosas a broma) "Tal es mi genio: siempre me ha repugnado mirar a mis enemigos. Yo sé bien cuánto ha dolido a mi corazón".

(Cuando pide el divorcio) "Adiós, guarda tus cosas, devuélveme las mías. ¿Querrás ordenar que me acompañen? Si no quieres ordenarlo me marcharé sin otro acompañante que la honestidad".

Anfitrión: ¿No le crees, ni a mí, a tu marido, tampoco?
Alcmena: No, porque prefiero creerme a mí misma.

Definita anche tragicommedia perché unisce elementi comici con altri più seri risolvibili solo con l’intervento della divinità, questa commedia di Plauto è veramente un piccolo capolavoro di comicità. Comicità creata appunto da scambi di persona, equivoci, addirittura crisi d’identità. È un crescendo di trovate, fraintendimenti, dialoghi rapidi, battute fulminanti, doppi sensi e giochi di parole che regalano momenti di allegria allo spettatore. È un’opera che comunque fa riflettere, pur nel divertimento, sulla complessità dell'identità, ma anche sull’amore, la dignità dei sentimenti, la fedeltà o anche sul rapporto tra l'uomo e il destino.

per quanto plauto effettivamente non sia il meglio del meglio della letteratura latina, stilisticamente parlando, vederlo dal vivo in un teatro greco in sicilia devo dire che è stata un’esperienza bellissima, da fare almeno una volta nella vita. leggendolo non mi ha mai fatto realmente ridere, ma anche grazie alla bravura degli attori (la compagnia molière con la regia di emilio solfrizzi) sono MORTA, così come tutto il teatro.

Amfitrion jest niezły, chociaż farsa (skupiona praktycznie tylko na skeczach) nie przemawia do mnie aż tak jak komedia intrygi i charakteru, które jednak wciągają też fabułą.

Dialogi były szybkie i błyskotliwe, fabuła bardzo prosta a jednocześnie ciekawie igrała z wyobrażeniami o tragedii. Nadal jestem pod wrażeniem zabawnych tłumaczeń gier słownych i żartów tłumaczki!

First time reading Plautus and after getting used to the style I actually really liked the story! I did think the commentary was not amazingly good, so that's why I have to give this 3 stars (instead of the 4 stars I give the story/the Latin itself).

3.5 stars. This is the original bedroom farce -- a classic switcheroo plot in which a character pretends to be another man in order to sleep with the other man’s wife. In this case, the Lothario in question is actually the god Jupiter. Of course, this plot was old even in Plautus’s time, but the comedy still moves at a brisk pace and is generally funny. It’s unfortunate that the climax is lost (the very point at which the husband and wife realize they have been duped), but my edition translated by E.F Watling includes a reconstruction of that scene by Watling that is, quite frankly, better than the rest of the original surviving text by Plautus.

Plautus hat mit Amphitruo keine seiner typischen Komödien geschaffen. Denn erstmal geht es in ihr um die Geburt des Herkules, womit sie eindeutig in der Helden- und nicht in der bürgerlichen Sphäre spielt. Und zweitens scheint die Situation zwischenzeitlich unlösbar und könnte damit ziemlich düster enden.
Mit Betonung auf könnte allerdings, denn natürlich endet das Stück positiv und mit der Verwechslung durch das Doppelgängermotiv befinden wir uns auch schon wieder in der Komödie.
Plautus verschmilzt also Motive der Tragödie und mit der Komödie und kreiert damit eine neue Gattung, die Tragikomödie. Ein ziemlich passender Titel.

Stoff ist die Geburt des Herkules und die damit einhergehende Verwandlung des Jupiters in Amphitruo, um Alcumena zu täuschen. Als der echte Amphitruo jedoch früher als gedacht von einem Kriegszug nach Hause kommt, führt das plötzliche Doppelgängerdarsein zu viel Verwirrung unter allen Beteiligten.

Amphitruo verliert beinahe seinen Verstand.
Jupiter beweist (endlich), dass er ein wenig Moral besitzt.
Sosia sieht den Witz an der ganzen Sache.
Und Merkur bleibt seinem inneren Trickster treu.
Allein Alcumena steht über allem und wartet einfach bis sich die anderen wieder eingekriegt haben.

Was mir jedoch am besten gefallen hat, war wie Plautus das Medium der Komödie nutzt, um Kritik am System zu üben. Natürlich ist er durch das Format ein wenig geschützt, aber trauen muss man sich das trotzdem erst mal.

Alles in allem, hätte ich jedoch durchaus davon profitiert, Amphitruo als Aufführung zu sehen. Es hätte sich schon alleine aufgrund der Cantica gelohnt. Aber auch sonst fand ich einige Szenen beim Lesen weniger lustig als erschreckend und traurig.

Ich konnte zwar bereits Einblicke in das Genie des Plautus erhaschen, völlig von sich überzeugen konnte er mich allerdings noch nicht.

no cinema, há o género rom-com que não tem finalidade alguma além de fazer o tempo deslizar bem. é fofinho, engraçado, e deixa uma sensação agradável no corpo. este livro foi igual. agradável de ler, lê-se num ápice, e ainda deu para umas gargalhadas.
