This particular book isn't really a novel. It's a collection of short stories about Basil Argyros, essentially a secret agent in 14th century Byzantine empire.
Except this Byzantine empire is a bit different than the one in our past due to a few minor changes:
1) An Arab named Moaumet, in the 6th century, takes a trading expedition to Syria, converts to Christianity and becomes a great saint.
2) There is never a great Schism. And Constantinople remains the center of *all* Christianity. There's a Bishop of Rome, but he's just one among equals.
One thing that I was acutely aware of was that Turtledove wrote these stories in the mid 80's.
I seriously doubt he could get them published now, due to 1). Back then, he was well known author yes, but well known in a particular genre, without media being so connected, and without the high sensitivity that is present now for anything that remotely touches anything near Islam. To publish an alternative history where Muhammad becomes Christian and Islam is never founded would be edgy today.
The book itself was fun. James Bond in an alternative Eastern Roman Empire. It was a nice read, since you could put it down between stories. While they were vaguely connected, each one could stand alone just fine. Oh, since Islam was never founded, the other main power besides Byzantium was Zoroastrian Persia. Basil does have his "Mary Sue" moments, when he is instrumental in discovering: the telescope, a cure for small pox, the printing press, and gun powder.
As I said, it's fun. A light read, and interesting if you like thinking about history from the "what if" perspective.
Sadly, it's out of print. But that's what used bookstores are for.

The Roman Emperor, Constantine, accomplished many things, among them were the reorganizing of the Empire, moving its capitol from Rome to a city straddling the Black Sea and the Mediterranean that he called Constantinople. That capitol and that part of the Empire lasted for a thousand years though some of those centuries were very tough times. The rise of the Ottoman Empire was its doom.
Harry Turtledove imagines that Islam never arose and that this Byzantine Empire continues to exist and thrive. In this book of separate stories, he tackles what might be some key issues for that Empire and the challenges fall to his warrior/investigator, Argyros.
“This book…draws heavily on my academic background. It’s set in the early fourteenth century of an alternate world where Muhammad, instead of founding Islam, is converted to Christianity.” He becomes a key saint. Argyros rises in the Empire to become a ranking member of its “Central Intelligence Agency.” These stories bring us into a world both familiar and different than our own history books tell us.
We meet the barbarian peoples of the Caucasus and the steppes; the Egyptians, the Franks and Lombards and Lithuanians; as well as, those closest to Constantinople. The battle of religions between Byzantium and the Persian Empire is another interesting piece of the background. We witness how the invention of the telescope, the printing press and “greek fire” are passed on and/or suppressed. We see the devastation of disease and riot.
The stories themselves each have a mystery or problem to solve. Turtledove makes it all very interesting, even for the casual reader.

Ο Χάρι Τέρτλνταβ είναι ίσως ο πιο γνωστός συγγραφέας μυθιστορημάτων εναλλακτικής ιστορίας, όμως κλασικά στην Ελλάδα δεν του έχει δοθεί και η πρέπουσα σημασία. Το "Πράκτορας του Βυζαντίου" είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο του που βλέπουμε στα ελληνικά, και η επιλογή του είναι απόλυτα λογική με βάση τη θεματολογία του. Λοιπόν, προσωπικά δηλώνω εξαιρετικά ικανοποιημένος. Ουσιαστικά έχουμε να κάνουμε με επτά ιστορίες που διαδραματίζονται σε διαφορετική χρονιά, με πρωταγωνιστή έναν πράκτορα της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας, τον Βασίλειο Αργυρό, ο οποίος ζει στις αρχές του 14ου αιώνα, σ' έναν εναλλακτικό κόσμο όπου το Ισλάμ δεν υπήρξε ποτέ. Το βιβλίο διαθέτει πολλά ωραία καλούδια, όπως δράση, ένταση, δυνατές σκηνές και ωραίες εικόνες, ενώ τα διάφορα σενάρια εναλλακτικής ιστορίας έχουν φυσικά το ενδιαφέρον τους, αλλά και την πλάκα τους. Μπορεί να μην εντυπωσιάστηκα κιόλας από τις ιστορίες αυτές καθαυτές, όμως βρήκα την όλη κοσμοπλασία πολύ ωραία και αρκετά πειστική, ενώ ξετρελάθηκα με τη γενικότερη ατμόσφαιρα. Επίσης ούτε η γραφή εντυπωσιάζει ιδιαίτερα, κάνει όμως πολύ καλά τη δουλειά της και είναι σαφέστατα ευχάριστη και ευκολοδιάβαστη. Πιστεύω ότι είναι ένα βιβλίο που προσφέρει ψυχαγωγία και τροφή για σκέψη, ενώ αν μη τι άλλο σε κάνει να θέλεις να διαβάσεις περισσότερα πράγματα σχετικά με την εποχή. Μακάρι να δούμε και άλλα βιβλία του συγγραφέα στα ελληνικά, αν και το βλέπω κομματάκι απίθανο.

James Bond does ancient Constantinople. One of Turtledove’s better alternate histories. Apparently a series of short stories gathered into one collection, revealed by the repetition of background elements in each chapter. Didn’t disrupt the flow too much.
“Had they not been taken ill, I never would have stumbled across the truth that will save so many more from a like fate. Truly I am but an instrument of His will.” “Oh, hogwash,” the doctor said. “What of all the others who got sick and died in the epidemic? If God killed all of them just so two would draw your attention, He strikes me as bloody wasteful.”
Turtledove at his best: playing “what if” with a key element of history, in this case the impact of the conversion of Muhammad to Christianity rather than founding a new religion. The characters, beliefs, events are all enjoyably believable. The increased rate of invention, and the role of the protagonist in many of those advances, is independent of the background thread.
“After the hippodrome, theology has always been Constantinople’s favorite sport.”
Interesting that a major author could write of religious controversies and history in the late 1980s with the hope of engaging his audience. Few authors today would dare.
"Not much room for divine intervention in any of that.” “Wasn’t it you who said we’d have to help the Holy Spirit along? God works through men; that is why He created them, to unfold His scheme for the world. You were also the one who pointed out that God had to become a man to save mankind.” Both men crossed themselves. “Yes, but that was a miracle,” Argyros persisted.
“Must all your miracles be showy?”

Género. Novela (con una enorme premisa de partida que la coloca totalmente en la ficción, pero novela al fin y al cabo).
Lo que nos cuenta. En una realidad en la que el Imperio Bizantino sigue controlando la mayor parte de las posesiones del Imperio Romano y en la que nunca surgió el Islam, Basilios Argyros es un explorador que sirve en la fuerza trata de detener una incursión bárbara en la estepa al otro lado del Danubio. La inteligencia, determinación y habilidad que muestra para localizar un extraño objeto que el enemigo usa para obtener ventajas tácticas en el campo de batalla, hace que sea recomendado por el strategos para formar parte de los magistrianoi, agentes imperiales de élite que sirven a Bizancio por todo el territorio y más allá de él velando por la seguridad del imperio. Iremos conociendo más de Basilios y de las amenazas contra el Imperio Bizantino mediante las distintas misiones del agente imperial.

I don't recall how this particular title came to my attention. The synopsis seemed right up my alley. What I had pictured was more like Sword for the Empire. Something like: with barbarism at the fringes of the known world, our hero the industrious spy, would use wits and brawn to save the day. What I read was something dry, with little action. I did enjoy Basil's inventive solutions to his immediate problem in each story, but it didn't lend that page turning quality I was looking for.
My biggest beef is the cover. It misleads you to think that this isn't just an alternative history story, but that it also has themes of science fiction. There are no gadgets or electronics like pictured. In fact, none of the covers I have seen for this book do it justice. The newest edition is cool with the fire in the background, but it still doesn't represent the book properly.
I wanted to love it, but I ended up just liking it.
Agent of Byzantium is actually a series of short stories. Chronological order. Open ended for more adventures. Getting to read all the stories in one place is always a good thing.

Βιβλιοέναυσμα #45: Πράκτορας του Βυζαντίου

Πράκτορας του Βυζαντίου τού Harry Turtledove (Anubis, 2021, 384 σ.). Βυζάντιο και συλλογή διηγημάτων. Δεν χρειάζεται εισαγωγή, αλλά μακροβούτι. Πάρτε βαθιά ανάσα και βουτήξτε μαζί μου.
Το βιβλίο ανήκει στην κατηγορία τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας. Συγκεκριμένα, το Ισλάμ δεν υπήρξε ποτέ, το Βυζάντιο δεν απώλεσε την Μέση Ανατολή και την Αίγυπτο από τους Άραβες, και μάλιστα επέκτεινε την κυριαρχία του σε όλη την Ιταλία, την Ισπανία, και στην νότια Γαλατία. Η περσική Σασσανιδική αυτοκρατορία παραμένει επίσης άθικτη, και συγκροτεί μαζί με το Βυζάντιο το παγκόσμιο δίπολο κυριαρχίας. Οι ιστορίες τού βιβλίου διαδραματίζονται τον 13ο αιώνα μ.Χ., σε ένα κόσμο που θυμίζει αρκετά τον 6ο αι. μετά την επανακατάκτηση των δυτικών επαρχιών επί Ιουστιανιανού, με την σημαντική όμως διαφορά πως στον κόσμο τού Turtledove οι βαρβαρικές απειλές είναι σημαντικά εξασθενημένες και το Βυζάντιο απολαμβάνει μία ανεπανάληπτη ευημερία και σταθερότητα. Το στήσιμο τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας ήταν λοιπόν εξαιρετικό, με την ένσταση πως θα ήθελα να ήξερα παραπάνω για το τι μεσολάβησε στους επτά αιώνες από το σημείο διαφοροποίησης από την πραγματική ιστορία έως τα γεγονότα τού βιβλίου.
Ο Turtledove, όντας διδάκτωρ βυζαντινής ιστορίας, δεν θα μπορούσε παρά να απεικονίσει ρεαλιστικά τον βυζαντινό κόσμο, ακόμα και υπό το πρίσμα τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας. Χρησιμοποιεί πληροφορίες από στρατιωτικά εγχειρίδια, τα οποία και αναφέρει στην αφήγηση, όπως τού Μαυρίκιου και του Τάκιτου για να περιγράψει π.χ. τα στρατόπεδα και τους στρατιωτικούς βαθμούς, ενώ έχει μελετήσει και τα των νομάδων – π.χ. αναφέρε�� την τακτική των εναλλασσόμενων αλόγων για ταχύτατη διάνυση μεγάλων αποστάσεων. Διαφοροποιεί μεταξύ Έτους Κυρίου (το σημερινό σύστημα χρονολόγησης) και Έτους Κόσμου (σύμφωνα με τους βυζαντινούς, ο κόσμος δημιουγήθηκε το 5509 π.Χ.). Αναφέρει διαρκώς τις προφορές των διαφόρων ομιλούντων, άλλη για τους Αιγύπτιους, άλλη για τους Αλανούς, κλπ, και εξηγεί τις ιδιαιτερότητες των ελληνικών και των λατινικών στο Βυζάντιο (αλλά και άλλων γλωσσών όπως τα αρμενικά και κοπτικά). Επινοεί ονόματα ενδεικτικά τής ποχής, όπως Φίλιππος ο Άραβας, Τεκμάνιος, Ιουστίνος από Ταρσό κλπ. Εστιάζει στις τοπικιστικές διαφορές και εντάσεις, καθώς και στην γάγγραινα τού Βυζαντίου, τις αιρέσεις (π.χ. μονοφυσιτισμός και νεστοριανισμός), με την εικονομαχία μάλιστα να απασχολεί ένα ολόκληρο διήγημα.
Άλλο ένα δυνατό σημείο τού βιβλίου είναι η γεωγραφία. Οι ιστορίες του μας ταξιδεύουν από τις στέπες βόρεια τού Δούναβη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, από την Αλεξάνδρεια τής Αιγύπτου στα Πυρηναία Όρη (όπου και τα σύνορα τού Βυζαντίου με τους φραγκοσάξονες – ναι, στο βιβλίο υπάρχουν φραγκοσάξονες όχι αγγλοσάξονες), και από την Δάρα τής Μεσοποταμείας στις Πύλες τής Κασπίας. Όλα τα μέρη περιγράφονται εξαίσια, με πλήθος ιστορικών τοποθεσιών ειδικά στην Κωνσταντινούπολη ( Μέση Οδός, Υδραγωγείο Ουάλεντος, Φόρο Θεοδοσίου, Μονή Στουδίου) και στην Αλεξάνδρεια (Βιβλιοθήκη τής Αλεξάνδρειας, Φάρος της Αλεξάνδρειας, Επταστάδιο, Κάνωπος Οδός).
Έξτρα πόντους δίνω για: αναφορά σε σκευοφόρους (σκέφτηκα αμέσως τα Γαυγάμηλα), αναφορά σε Ρωμαίους όχι Βυζαντινούς, εξώφυλλο (θυμίζει Attila Total War), αναφορά στον δυικό αριθμό, αναφορά σε ιστορικές και επιστημονικές προσωπικότητες (π.χ. στον αρχιτέκτονα τού Φάρου της Αλεξάνδρειας, Σώστρατο τον Κνίδιο), συγγραφή από έναν χαρακτήρα τού επικού ποιήματος Ιταλιάδα (!!) για την επανακατάκτηση τής Ιταλίας, αναφορά στην βιβλιοθήκη τής Αγίας Σοφίας, και αναφορά σε παλίμψηστα (περγαμηνές που ξύνεται το μελάνι για να επαναχρησιμοποιηθούν – ψάξτε για το Παλίμψηστο τού Αρχιμήδη).
Πάμε τώρα και στον αφηγητή τού βιβλίου, τον βυζαντινό πράκτορα – με την βυζαντινή ορολογία μαγιστριανού – Βασίλειο Αργυρό. Πολυμήχανος, δυνατός και έξυπνος αλλά και πονηρός, με θρησκευτικές προκαταλήψεις και εμμονές αλλά και με πλήθος πρωτότυπων τεχνασμάτων, με ανθρώπινες αδυναμίες – ειδικά σαρκικές – ήταν ο κατάλληλος άνθρωπος στην κατάλληλη θέση. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι πρόκειται για ένα είδος… Τζέιμς Μποντ – μιας και μιλάμε για πράκτορες – στο λίγο πιο σκοταδιστικό. Κουβαλάει πάνω του όλο το βιβλίο χωρίς να αγκομαχάει καθόλου, παρότι κάμποσες φορές τρώει ξύλο που βάζει και στις… τσέπες. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η σκηνή που βρίσκεται κατά λάθος στο μέσο ενός εξεγερμένου όχλου και τρώει τής χρονιάς του από τους στρατιώτες, που δεν ξέρουν ότι είναι μαγιστριανός.
Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από επτά διήγηματα, καθένα και μικρή περιπέτεια μυστηρίου, σε τριτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση τού προαναφερθέντος Βασιλείου Αργυρού. Δράση υπάρχει σε μικρές ποσότητες στα μισά, αρκετά διηγήματα έχουν να κάνουν με πιθανολογούμενες μαγείες που καταλήγουν απλά τεχνολογικές πρωτοτυπίες, ενώ το δυνατό στοιχείο σε κάθε ιστορία είναι πως έχει ξεκάθαρο θέμα και στόχο. Οι ιστορίες κυριαρχούνται από την πλοκή, με τα στοιχεία τού κόσμου να δίνονται σε μικρές και εύπεπτες ποσότητες. Συνδετικοί κρίκοι, τόσο σε πρόσωπα όσο και αντικείμενα, υπάρχουν μεταξύ μερικών ιστοριών, αν και εύκολα διαβάζονται αυτόνομα. Πάντως τις διάβασα με την σειρά, μία ανά μέρα. Πάμε τώρα να δούμε ένα-ένα τα επτά διηγήματα (έχουν κάποιες αποκαλύψεις για την πλοκή λόγω τής δομής τού βιβλίου, διαβάστε με δική σας ευθύνη):
Έτος Κυρίου 6814. Ο Αργυρός βρίσκεται στις στέπες βόρεια τού Δούναβη σε μία αναγνωριστική επιχείρηση για ίχνη νομαδών εισβολέων (συγκεκριμένα των Γιούρχεν). Ο σωλήνας που κρατάει ο σαμάνος των Γιούρχεν θεωρείται πως του επιτρέπει να ακούει από μακριά τις εντολές των Ρωμαίων και ο Αργυρός στέλνεται ως δήθεν λιποτάκτης στους νομάδες ώστε να διελευκάνει το μυστήριο. Αρκετή δράση, θύμισε την Νυχτερινή Φρουρά από το Τραγούδι της Φωτιάς και του Πάγου.
Έτος Κυρίου 6816. Μετά την μετάθεση για την επιτυχία τής προηγούμενης αποστολής, ο Αργυρός βρίσκεται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη και αντιμετωπίζει μία πανδημία. Αριστουργηματική η περιγραφή τόσο τής πανδημίας όσο και τής αντιμετώπισής της.
Έτος Κυρίου 6818. Ο Φάρος τής Αλεξάνδρειας έχει καταρρεύσει από σεισμούς και τα έργα αναδόμησής του βαλτώνουν. Έτσι, ο Αργυρός στέλνεται επι τόπου από τον αυτοκράτορα Νικηφόρο Γ’. Εκεί θα αντιμετωπίσει τις συντεχνίες των ξυλουργών, των χτιστών, και των λιθοξόων καθώς και τον έπαρχο τής πόλης.. Θυμίζει και Assassin’s Creed: Origins η Αλεξάνδρεια..
Έτος Κυρίου 6824. Η κατάληψη οκτώ οχυρών και τριών πόλεων από τους Φραγκοσάξονες στα Πυρηναία, θα στείλει τον Αργυρό στην Ισπανία, συγκεκριμένα στην Νέα Καρχηδόνα. Πιο ανησυχητικό και από την απώλεια εδαφών είναι το νέο δαιμονικό όπλο των Φραγκοσαξόνων, που ομοιάζει πολύ στο υγρό πυρ. Με την βοήθεια δύο Άγγλων εμπόρων, ο Αργυρός θα ταξιδέψει ως τις Άλπεις ώστε να βρει την πηγή τού όπλου στο απομονωμένο μοναστήρι τού Αγίου Γάλλου..
Έτος Κυρίου 6825. Στην πόλη-οχυρό Δάρας τής Μεσοποταμίας, εκατοντάδες τοιχοκολλημένα φυλλάδια καλούν τον εν πολλοίς περσικό πληθυσμό σε εξέγερση. Και σαν να μην έφτανε αυτό, το φυλλάδια μοιάζουν απίστευτα μεταξύ τους, σαν να παρήχθηκαν μαζικά με έναν μαγικό τρόπο. Ποιος άλλος από τον Αργυρό για να λύσει το μυστήριο; Σε αυτήν την ιστορία συναντάμε και την Μιρράν, την νέμεση τού Αργυρού.

Εξεγέρσεις ξεσπούν στην Κωνσταντινούπολη όταν από την Αίγυπτο εκκινεί η απόρριψη των εικόνων ως ειδωλολατρικών αντικειμένων (θυμηθείτε πως βρισκόμαστε μεν στον 14ο αι. μ.Χ., αλλά σε περιβάλλον εναλλακτικής ιστορίας, οπότε η Εικονομαχία δεν έγινε τον 8ο αι. μ.Χ.). Ο αυτοκράτορας καλεί Οικουμενική Σύνοδο στην Πόλη, αλλά την λύση δεν θα την δώσει η θεολογία..
Έτος Κυρίου 6829. Οι περιβόητες Πύλες τής Κασπίας είναι το όριο μεταξύ τού Βυζαντίου και της Περσίας από την μία και των νομαδικών φυλών από την άλλη. Τώρα τις κατέχουν οι Αλανοί, αλλά φήμες λένε πως τα έχουν βρει με τους Κιργίζιους και πως οι Πύλες θα ανοίξουν για χιλιάδες έφιππους νομάδες, έτοιμους να τσακίσουν τις δύο αυτοκρατορίας όπως ο Αττίλας και οι Ούνοι. Ο Αργυρός θα σταλεί στον Καύκασο, στην ιστορία με την περισσότερη δράση από όλο το βιβλίο..
Εν κατακλείδι, ελπίζω να απολαύσετε τον Πράκτορα τού Βυζαντίου όσο και εγώ! Ευχαριστώ τις εκδόσεις Anubis για την προμήθεια τού βιβλίου. Πράκτορας του Βυζαντίου τού Harry Turtledove (Anubis, 2021, 384 σ.). Βυζάντιο και συλλογή διηγημάτων. Δεν χρειάζεται εισαγωγή, αλλά μακροβούτι. Πάρτε βαθιά ανάσα και βουτήξτε μαζί μου.
Το βιβλίο ανήκει στην κατηγορία τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας. Συγκεκριμένα, το Ισλάμ δεν υπήρξε ποτέ, το Βυζάντιο δεν απώλεσε την Μέση Ανατολή και την Αίγυπτο από τους Άραβες, και μάλιστα επέκτεινε την κυριαρχία του σε όλη την Ιταλία, την Ισπανία, και στην νότια Γαλατία. Η περσική Σασσανιδική αυτοκρατορία παραμένει επίσης άθικτη, και συγκροτεί μαζί με το Βυζάντιο το παγκόσμιο δίπολο κυριαρχίας. Οι ιστορίες τού βιβλίου διαδραματίζονται τον 13ο αιώνα μ.Χ., σε ένα κόσμο που θυμίζει αρκετά τον 6ο αι. μετά την επανακατάκτηση των δυτικών επαρχιών επί Ιουστιανιανού, με την σημαντική όμως διαφορά πως στον κόσμο τού Turtledove οι βαρβαρικές απειλές είναι σημαντικά εξασθενημένες και το Βυζάντιο απολαμβάνει μία ανεπανάληπτη ευημερία και σταθερότητα. Το στήσιμο τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας ήταν λοιπόν εξαιρετικό, με την ένσταση πως θα ήθελα να ήξερα παραπάνω για το τι μεσολάβησε στους επτά αιώνες από το σημείο διαφοροποίησης από την πραγματική ιστορία έως τα γεγονότα τού βιβλίου.
Ο Turtledove, όντας διδάκτωρ βυζαντινής ιστορίας, δεν θα μπορούσε παρά να απεικονίσει ρεαλιστικά τον βυζαντινό κόσμο, ακόμα και υπό το πρίσμα τής εναλλακτικής ιστορίας. Χρησιμοποιεί πληροφορίες από στρατιωτικά εγχειρίδια, τα οποία και αναφέρει στην αφήγηση, όπως τού Μαυρίκιου και του Τάκιτου για να περιγράψει π.χ. τα στρατόπεδα και τους στρατιωτικούς βαθμούς, ενώ έχει μελετήσει και τα των νομάδων – π.χ. αναφέρε�� την τακτική των εναλλασσόμενων αλόγων για ταχύτατη διάνυση μεγάλων αποστάσεων. Διαφοροποιεί μεταξύ Έτους Κυρίου (το σημερινό σύστημα χρονολόγησης) και Έτους Κόσμου (σύμφωνα με τους βυζαντινούς, ο κόσμος δημιουγήθηκε το 5509 π.Χ.). Αναφέρει διαρκώς τις προφορές των διαφόρων ομιλούντων, άλλη για τους Αιγύπτιους, άλλη για τους Αλανούς, κλπ, και εξηγεί τις ιδιαιτερότητες των ελληνικών και των λατινικών στο Βυζάντιο (αλλά και άλλων γλωσσών όπως τα αρμενικά και κοπτικά). Επινοεί ονόματα ενδεικτικά τής ποχής, όπως Φίλιππος ο Άραβας, Τεκμάνιος, Ιουστίνος από Ταρσό κλπ. Εστιάζει στις τοπικιστικές διαφορές και εντάσεις, καθώς και στην γάγγραινα τού Βυζαντίου, τις αιρέσεις (π.χ. μονοφυσιτισμός και νεστοριανισμός), με την εικονομαχία μάλιστα να απασχολεί ένα ολόκληρο διήγημα.
Άλλο ένα δυνατό σημείο τού βιβλίου είναι η γεωγραφία. Οι ιστορίες του μας ταξιδεύουν από τις στέπες βόρεια τού Δούναβη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, από την Αλεξάνδρεια τής Αιγύπτου στα Πυρηναία Όρη (όπου και τα σύνορα τού Βυζαντίου με τους φραγκοσάξονες – ναι, στο βιβλίο υπάρχουν φραγκοσάξονες όχι αγγλοσάξονες), και από την Δάρα τής Μεσοποταμείας στις Πύλες τής Κασπίας. Όλα τα μέρη περιγράφονται εξαίσια, με πλήθος ιστορικών τοποθεσιών ειδικά στην Κωνσταντινούπολη ( Μέση Οδός, Υδραγωγείο Ουάλεντος, Φόρο Θεοδοσίου, Μονή Στουδίου) και στην Αλεξάνδρεια (Βιβλιοθήκη τής Αλεξάνδρειας, Φάρος της Αλεξάνδρειας, Επταστάδιο, Κάνωπος Οδός).
Έξτρα πόντους δίνω για: αναφορά σε σκευοφόρους (σκέφτηκα αμέσως τα Γαυγάμηλα), αναφορά σε Ρωμαίους όχι Βυζαντινούς, εξώφυλλο (θυμίζει Attila Total War), αναφορά στον δυικό αριθμό, αναφορά σε ιστορικές και επιστημονικές προσωπικότητες (π.χ. στον αρχιτέκτονα τού Φάρου της Αλεξάνδρειας, Σώστρατο τον Κνίδιο), συγγραφή από έναν χαρακτήρα τού επικού ποιήματος Ιταλιάδα (!!) για την επανακατάκτηση τής Ιταλίας, αναφορά στην βιβλιοθήκη τής Αγίας Σοφίας, και αναφορά σε παλίμψηστα (περγαμηνές που ξύνεται το μελάνι για να επαναχρησιμοποιηθούν – ψάξτε για το Παλίμψηστο τού Αρχιμήδη).
Πάμε τώρα και στον αφηγητή τού βιβλίου, τον βυζαντινό πράκτορα – με την βυζαντινή ορολογία μαγιστριανού – Βασίλειο Αργυρό. Πολυμήχανος, δυνατός και έξυπνος αλλά και πονηρός, με θρησκευτικές προκαταλήψεις και εμμονές αλλά και με πλήθος πρωτότυπων τεχνασμάτων, με ανθρώπινες αδυναμίες – ειδικά σαρκικές – ήταν ο κατάλληλος άνθρωπος στην κατάλληλη θέση. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι πρόκειται για ένα είδος… Τζέιμς Μποντ – μιας και μιλάμε για πράκτορες – στο λίγο πιο σκοταδιστικό. Κουβαλάει πάνω του όλο το βιβλίο χωρίς να αγκομαχάει καθόλου, παρότι κάμποσες φορές τρώει ξύλο που βάζει και στις… τσέπες. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η σκηνή που βρίσκεται κατά λάθος στο μέσο ενός εξεγερμένου όχλου και τρώει τής χρονιάς του από τους στρατιώτες, που δεν ξέρουν ότι είναι μαγιστριανός.
Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από επτά διήγηματα, καθένα και μικρή περιπέτεια μυστηρίου, σε τριτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση τού προαναφερθέντος Βασιλείου Αργυρού. Δράση υπάρχει σε μικρές ποσότητες στα μισά, αρκετά διηγήματα έχουν να κάνουν με πιθανολογούμενες μαγείες που καταλήγουν απλά τεχνολογικές πρωτοτυπίες, ενώ το δυνατό στοιχείο σε κάθε ιστορία είναι πως έχει ξεκάθαρο θέμα και στόχο. Οι ιστορίες κυριαρχούνται από την πλοκή, με τα στοιχεία τού κόσμου να δίνονται σε μικρές και εύπεπτες ποσότητες. Συνδετικοί κρίκοι, τόσο σε πρόσωπα όσο και αντικείμενα, υπάρχουν μεταξύ μερικών ιστοριών, αν και εύκολα διαβάζονται αυτόνομα. Πάντως τις διάβασα με την σειρά, μία ανά μέρα. Πάμε τώρα να δούμε ένα-ένα τα επτά διηγήματα (έχουν κάποιες αποκαλύψεις για την πλοκή λόγω τής δομής τού βιβλίου, διαβάστε με δική σας ευθύνη):

Το μυστήριο ντυμένο με πορφύρα
Ο Hurry Turtledove είναι ένας αναγνωρισμένος συγγραφέας επιστημονικής και ιστορικής φαντασίας, ενώ συχνά αποκαλείται “άρχοντας της εναλλακτικής φαντασίας” εξαιτίας του ταλέντου του να δημιουργεί εναλλακτικά σύμπαντα μέσα στα οποία εξετάζει τα διάφορα ιστορικά ενδεχόμενα, κατασκευάζοντας ένα είδος θεωρητικών πειραμάτων, γέννημα θρέμμα της φαντασίας και της λογοτεχνικής του δεινότητας. Ο Πράκτορας του Βυζαντίου” είναι η πρώτη μετάφραση του έργου του για το ελληνικό κοινό δια χειρός Ορέστη Μανούσου και κυκλοφορεί από τις εκδόσεις Anubis.
Πρόκειται για μια συλλογή επτά διηγημάτων που λαμβάνουν χώρα σε μια εναλλακτική βερσιόν της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας τον 14ο αιώνα, κατά την οποία το Ισλάμ και η απειλή του δεν υπήρξαν ποτέ. Ως εκ τούτου, τα λάβαρα της Βασιλεύουσας κυματίζουν σε όλο το γνωστό κόσμο και η Κωνσταντινούπολη πρωταγωνιστεί σε αυτόν, ως μια γέφυρα Ανατολής και Δύσης, όπως οραματίστηκαν και οι πρώτοι αυτοκράτορες της. Από την άλλη μεριά, το μόνο αντίπαλο δέος είναι η Περσική Αυτοκρατορία και οι σχέσεις της με αυτήν απηχούν κάτι από τον πολύ πιο πρόσφατο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο. Ωστόσο, όσο κι αν νομίζουμε ότι δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πιο υπόγειο και ραδιούργο από την σχέση ΗΠΑ και ΕΣΣΔ κατά την περίοδο αυτή, οφείλουμε να ομολογήσουμε ότι το Βυζάν��ιο είναι η “μαμά τους” και πάνω σε αυτό ακριβώς το γεγονός χτίζει ο Turtledove την ουσία των διηγημάτων του.
Φορέας όλων αυτών των χαρακτηριστικών, που έχουν κάνει τη λέξη “βυζαντινός” να είναι ταυτόσημη με τη δολοπλοκία είναι ο ήρωας του “Πράκτορα του Βυζαντίου”, ο Βασίλειος Αργυρός, ο οποίος πρωταγωνιστεί και στα επτά διηγήματα του Turtledove λύνοντας μυστήρια, κατασκοπεύοντας τον εχθρό και αποκαλύπτοντας μυστικά που φανερώνουν ότι στην ιστορία -ακόμα και την εναλλακτική – καμιά Αυτοκρατορία δεν είναι άφθαρτη, ούτε διαρκεί για πάντα. Πολυμήχανο��, έξυπνος, δυνατός, γεμάτος εμμονές και προλήψεις, ο Βασίλειος Αργυρός αποτελεί τον κορμό των διηγημάτων, φέρνοντας παράλληλα τον αναγνώστη σε επαφή με τον σκοταδισμό της εποχής, το μυστήριο και τη γοητεία εφευρέσεων που ομοιάζουν με μαγεία, αλλά και το πολιτικό παιχνίδι μεταξύ υπερδυνάμεων.
Την ίδια στιγμή, δε, που ο συγγραφέας διεγείρει το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη μέσα από τις περιπέτειες του Βυζαντινού πράκτορα, αυτός επιλέγει να δώσει και πληροφορίες σχετικές με τα πραγματικά ιστορικά γεγονότα που γέννησαν και τροφοδότησαν τη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία, όπως είναι οι σταυροφορίες, το θρησκευτικό σχίσμα και ο διαχωρισμός σε εικονομάχους και εικονολάτρες, οι αιρέσεις, ο σχηματισμός αντιμαχόμενων συντεχνιών με χαρακτηριστικά σύγχρονης μαφίας, αλλά και αναφορές σε ιστορικές προσωπικότητες και τοποθεσίες, που κάνουν τον εναλλακτικό του κόσμο κάτι παραπάνω από αληθοφανή. Τέλος, ο Turtledove, διδάκτωρ βυζαντινής ιστορίας, δε διστάσει να αυτοσχεδιάσει παίζοντας με τις διάφορες πιθανότητες που δίνει η ίδια η ιστορία, τα λεγόμενα ιστορικά “αν…”, κάτι που δίνει στη γραφή του έναν ιδιαίτερα τολμηρό χαρακτήρα.

En underbar alternativhistorisk berättelse, där Byzanteum och Persien överlevt, eftersom Mohammad kallades att bli biskop istället för profet. Huvudpersonen är spejare, senare agent (i ordets alla betydelser) till yrket, och får alla uppdrag man väntar sig av en kvasimedeltida prokurator; allt ifrån industrispionage till contrapropaganda till arbetsrättsförhandlingar. I den andra halvan av boken matchas han av en professionell agent från Persien. Båda personerna känns genuina och hantverksskickliga, och den värld som beskrivs är rimlig. Jag är mycket nöjd med denna läsning, och rekommenderar den starkt till både politiknördar och historienördar. Särskilt skildringen av ett ekumeniskt koncilium och politiken runt den är väldigt läsvärd, liksom innan dess inspektionen av det halvrestaurerade fyrtornet i Alexandria och problemen med arbetssäkerhet där. Den avslutande striden - där krut och grappa tillsammans används för att få kirgizer att återvända till stäpperna - är rolig och allvarlig samtidigt. Den känns Röde Ormartad, och det är ett högt betyg. Som sagt, rekommenderas starkt.

Entretenido, se lee bien y se disfruta de la recreación histórica que logra el autor, sin ponerse demasiado pesado con tecnicismo (no por gusto es graduado de historia). Algo ideal para aquellos que le gustan las ucronías y la historia de Bizancio.

This novel is actually a collected series of connected stories set about 1300 years after “one person was nailed to a tree” for being nice to people. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
But this does not mean this series of stories is humour. Actually it is quite serious, but the premise is that the Byzantium Empire never fell apart. The Empire is alive and thriving and so this is an alternate history work which, I believe, Turtledove is known for.
The stories themselves were published from 1985 through 1987 in various magazines.
Now I will be the first to admit that my “knowledge” of Byzantium history is shaky at best and non-existent for the most part, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the stories at all. But, I suppose, if you knew a great deal about Byzantium (and Turtledove has a PH.D. in Byzantium history) then you may get more out of it.
Anyhow, this series of stories centers around one man, Basil Argyros, a Roman who, as the stories progress, rises through the ranks of Byzantiums as he discovers, or rather uncovers, certain major developments in the developing fictional world.
He acts as a spy and travels to distant parts of the world to investigate strange happenings, some which appear to be magic. Discoveries touched upon are the telescope, small pox vaccine, gunpowder, the printing press and even distilled spirits. Quite a list and that is not all.
Woven into these discoveries is the story of Argyros himself, and he gets himself into and out of many scrapes. The last three stories have him up against a delightful nemesis; beautiful, crafty and deadly. Of course they have several memorable encounters, but I won’t spoil that fun for you.
Worth while read for sure, but my huge lack of historical knowledge probably left me out in the cold and I may have missed a lot of how Turtledove changed the “real” history of our world.
Collected in the “Isaac Asimov presents” hardback series, I think you can still find this one kicking around. If you do, it is worth picking up.

Mohammed, driven to Constantinople by a Persian invasion, embraces Christianity and later becomes known as St. Mouamet, religious poet and author of the famous verse, "There is no god but god, and Christ is his son." In this world, the Roman empire lives on and thrives in its Byzantine guise, and our protagonist Basil Argryos is on hand to witness the spread of gunpowder, the invention of distillation, and so on. Along the way, he even has a hand in the discovery of smallpox vaccination, and falls in love with a Sassanid spy.
A smart series of historical fiction vignettes by an author who specializes in alternative history and who just so happens to hold a degree in Byzantine history. It makes for a fun combination.

When I first read the synopsis of this book, I fell in love. I think the whole premise of this story is great! A world where Mohammed becomes a Christian saint instead of starting the Muslim faith opens up a world of opportunities (alt-his fic wise).
To make things even better, this book centers on the Byzantine Empire, specifically a secret agent of theirs. The Empire, along with the Persian Empire, are still the strongest force in their region, since the Islamic Empire never destroyed Persia and weakened Byzantine.
The secret agent is Basil Arygos. On the front cover it says he is Byzantine's James Bond. That really got me frothing at the bit to read this thing. The book is made up of short stories centered around Basil's adventures. The first half of the book dealt more with internal strife, and not very Bond like at all. But the second half really saved the book, and I could see where the Bond similarities came from.
I really liked Basil's foe, a spy for the Persian empire named Mirrane. She is as smart as Basil, and his counter part in every way.
This was quite an interesting read, and the second half of the story was great. I wish Harry Turtledove would revisit this world and tell some more stories of Basil Argyros.

December 29, 2011An interesting novel, which is in actuality a series of interconnected short stories, that takes place in an "alternate history" setting during the late middle ages. In this universe Mohammed did not create his own religion, but instead converted to Christianity and converted the majority of Arabs as well, becoming one of Christianities great saints. Because of this, the eastern Empire never falls, and Constantinople remains the great capital of Christendom. The plot of the book centers on citizen of Byzantium who works as a "secret agent" of sorts for the Empire. In each of the six stories he encounters some new "technology" of the Medieval era, which become major plot points for each story.
Don't expect high literature from this book. It's a light, quick read, but a lot of fun - especially if you're interested in medieval history, or even theology, which comes into play in most of the stories.

For a fan of historical fiction and alternate history scenarios, this is an ideal light read.
The key word is light -- don't expect this to be too much detail and don't expect large descriptions of war or battlefields etc.
The setting is an alternative history where Mohammad converts to Christianity and the Byzantine Empire is stronger than ever in the 14th century -- and it has the Sassanid Empire still there along side it.
It has a lot of things you would not expect in the 14th century and you may probably disagree a lot with the assumptions and the coincidences, but, as I said, treat this as a light read to keep you amused. You won't regret reading this book if you keep that in mind.

This is an alternate history in which the eastern Roman empire never fell. It is a very early Turtledove (may be his first novel) and is a fix-up of previously published stories. Basil Argyros is a secret agent for the Byzantine Empire. It strains credibility that one person, even one lifetime, could be involved with capturing one of the first telescopes, inventing vaccines, learning the secret of monks who invented gunpowder, a potter who has one of the first printing presses, etc. Still a very interesting book for what it does with history (and one of the few alternate histories not based on war or set in the last 300 years).

Great series of short stories all set in an alternate earth where Rome never fell and the Empire and Persia are the current 'super power' nations. All the stories star an agent for the empire and his various adventures/assignments. He's kind of the Roman James Bond.
Several stories feature his arch-rival a Persian femme-fatale. Very clever alternate history and a nice collection of stories.

Great Speculative Fiction From A Master
This is a collection of short stories about a reluctant hero, a man living in an alternate universe where Islam does not exist and the Roman Empire - or rather the Byzantine - is still going strong well into what we think of as the Middle Ages. I only wish he'd written more in this collection.

The world of 13th Century Byzantine Empire where Mohammad had converted to Christianity, and become a Saint. The setting is fascinating, but the story is pure action adventure, it just occurs in a world that never existed. It is also a love story, but not your classic boy meets girl. It is without doubt a fun read.

Only a person with a PH D in Byzantine history could come up with such a good plot. Basil Argyros is a likeable character who Turtledove uses quite well. I wish he would have expanded upon this book. I really enjoyed it.

Alternative History is a peculiar genre. Those that enjoy it rarely come to alternative history books for fleshed out characters or grand stories, but rather for the colourful and interesting portrayal of a world where one small instance has a different outcome that influences the future world to such a massive degree that the history is basically foreign to us.
In "Agent of Byzantium", this event is the way of the originally muslim prophet muhammed. Unlike in real history, muhammed converts to christianity during a trade journey, which leads to a world without islam, a much more powerful byzantine empire and a mighty zoroastrian persian empire which are both caught up in an intense imperial rivalry. This, by itself, is a very interesting proposition, since the byzantine empire is pretty underexplored in the realm of historical and alternative history fiction.
Our point of view character is Basil Argyros, who is basically medieval byzantine james bond and gets up to all sorts of hijinks, which bring him all over the empire and beyond, with each chapter being basically a self-contained story of one of his missions. While the establishment of different alt-historical settings is lovely, the characters in the book are pretty flat all around, but as i elaborated earlier, characters isn't the reason most people read alternative history.
All around, an enjoyable read and while it may not be something innovative, groundbreaking or interesting, story-wise, the establishment of this intricate alt-history scenario surely makes up for its shortcomings in terms of characters.

"Agente de Bizancio" no es una novela, es un conjunto de relatos, que si se tratara de una serie de televisión diríamos que es un "procedimental". Así, cada relato (excepto el segundo y el último) tiene una estructura parecida, en la que el protagonista, Basilios, una especie de espía o agente secreto, es enviado a una misión de la que saldrá airoso gracias a un avance tecnológico que él encontrará en manos del enemigo y que sabrá usar a su favor para luego incorporarlo a los recursos del imperio. Sin embargo, lo interesante del tema no es esto sino que se trata de una colección de relatos ucrónicos, es decir, una historia alternativa. En este caso concreto, el punto Jombar (el acontecimiento o suceso clave que cambia la historia respecto a la que nosotros conocemos) es la conversión de Mahoma al cristianismo ("No hay más Dios que el Señor y Jesucristo es su hijo"), lo que a la postre significa que no existe el Islam. Sin esta amenaza, el Imperio Romano de Oriente puede recuperar todos sus territorios occidentales, reunificando todo el territorio que ocupaba Roma antes de la división. Los relatos suceden varios siglos después, en el s.XIII, momento en el que los romanos tienen como enemigos a los francosajones más allá del Danubio y a los persas en el Este. Al principio las historias pasan en diferentes lugares del Imperio y plantean diferentes tipos de problemas (guerra, plagas, burocracia, teología), pero poco a poco, desde la aparición de Mirrane, la espía persa, hay un tenue hilo conductor y los últimos tres relatos tienen de fondo el conflicto entre Constantinopla y Ctesifonte.

I liked Basil Argyros; he is an interesting, well-rounded character. Mirrane is a solid enough semi-antagonist. Each individual story contributes a few interesting side-characters, but none of them are in the story long enough to make much of an impact. I kinda wished we could have had cameos later by characters such as Riario the Doctor or Wighard and Hilda.
The narrative structure is episodic, which, as it always to be expected with episodic stories, some parts were better than others. The smallpox in Constantinople and building the Pharos in Alexandria were the best sections.
I liked the setting and that we got to experience a variety of places (and really liked the scenes in Constantinople, having been to Istanbul I could picture walking some of the streets and forums he describes), but the setting does move around a lot, not really giving time to appreciate each stop fully.
The alternate history is solidly enough done, but some of the alterations don't quite make sense: for example, in real history the printing press came from northern Europe and gunpowder from the East, yet here the locations of these inventions is switched for reasons that are not explained.
Overall, "Agent of Byzantium" was an enjoyable book.

The main character, Basic Argryos, a Byzantine magestrianos (military spy) is a delight and each of stories revolve around the introduction of disruptive technological advances ranging from telescopes to gunpowder to distilled spirits to the printing press. Baen recently reprinted this book which is what brought it to my attention. There are deft touches of humor along with trenchant social commentary. A shame that Turtledove never revisited this theme, but he’s done similar work in his The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump and Every Inch a King. I look forward to his next book, Through Darkest Europe, due out in September.

Train Book #1: Hypothesizing a world in which the Prophet Muhammad turned to Christendom instead of sparking the rise of the Islamic world, Turtledove creates a branch of alternate history that explores the continued existence of the Byzantine—or Roman if you will—Empire into the 1300s. Starting the book I had thought it would focus heavily on “St.Mouamet” as he would be in his Greek Orthodox tongue, however the book follows a different path of an agent of the empire. On the fringes of both politics and reality, the protagonist leads us through vignettes of discovery. In hopes of not spoiling the fun, the discoveries are akin to many of the innovations throughout history that have changed its course many times over, giving power to those few who had it first. I was wary that this book had the potential to fall down the slippery slope of anti-Islamic sentiment, posing this alternative timeline as better than our own due to the absence of the Islamic faith. I was happy to read throughout that one can praise a culture without disparaging another, something easy to do and yet executed less frequently than hoped. In the end, Turtledove created a piece that shows no matter the era or place humans will always find a way to make work more efficient, whether that be in war or civil society.
