Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr. was an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. One of the world's most well-known African-American poets, her work includes poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, and nonfiction essays, and covers topics ranging from race and social issues to children's literature. She won numerous awards, including the Langston Hughes Medal and the NAACP Image Award. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for her poetry album, The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection. Additionally, she was named as one of Oprah Winfrey's 25 "Living Legends". Giovanni was a member of The Wintergreen Women Writers Collective.
Giovanni gained initial fame in the late 1960s as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, leading one writer to dub her the "Poet of the Black Revolution". During the 1970s, she began writing children's literature, and co-founded a publishing company, NikTom Ltd, to provide an outlet for other African-American women writers. Over subsequent decades, her works discussed social issues, human relationships, and hip hop. Poems such as "Knoxville, Tennessee" and "Nikki-Rosa" have been frequently re-published in anthologies and other collections.
Giovanni received numerous awards and holds 27 honorary degrees from various colleges and universities. She was also given the key to over two dozen cities. Giovanni was honored with the NAACP Image Award seven times. One of her more unique honors was having a South America bat species, Micronycteris giovanniae, named after her in 2007.
Giovanni was proud of her Appalachian roots and worked to change the way the world views Appalachians and Affrilachians.
Giovanni taught at Queens College, Rutgers, and Ohio State, and was a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech until September 1, 2022. After the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, she delivered a chant-poem at a memorial for the shooting victims.

Love Poems is my first introduction to Nikki Giovanni's poetry. I haven't yet read any literary criticism of her work, but, based on her age and her writing style, I'm going to go out on a limb and declare her as being influenced by both Langston Hughes's and Maya Angelou's poetry.

There's an innate sassiness and playfulness here, as well as a fantastic use of rhythm that I never find enough of in modern poetry. I liked being reminded of how jazzy and rhythmic poetry can be, a style that was once more commonplace among poets like Hughes, Sandburg, and Cummings (three of my all-time favorites).

However, this was a tricky collection for me to be reading during this somber week of isolation, violence and death.

It is, essentially, a celebration of Ms. Giovanni being in love again, and, yes, that is cause to celebrate, always.

Though the poet and I were on different wavelengths, I can't do anything but admire her ability to create rhythm within some playful, sexy poetry:

I wrote a good omelet
and ate a hot poem
after loving you

Buttoned my car
and drove my coat home
in the rain
after loving you

I goed on red
and stopped on green
floating somewhere in between
being here and being there
after loving you

I rolled my bed
turned down my hair
slightly confused but
I don't care
Laid out my teeth
and gargled my gown
then I stood
and laid me down
to sleep
after loving you

The perfect book for lovers in summer - pick one of these poems to read to that special someone during a moonlight picnic as you count shooting stars. I am sure couples will find many poems that remind them of each other here - and over the years the memory of those summer nights will be brought back every time the poems are read again.

Nikki Giovanni is irreverent, outrageous and outspoken and I love her. These are NOT the typical love poems at all. But some of them rhyme and I like that!!

I am currently reading (actually listening to) Hill Harper's Letters to a Young Sistah. Hill loves her too. She is mentioned more than once.

I’m almost done reading but the living legend Giovanni delivered with this collection. What I love most is how there are no easy words, her poems are so fluid, simplicity but vividly gorgeous.

She never reached with overly ambitious metaphors and cliches, instead ms. Giovanni painted pretty pictures with intimate details og her life and relationships. Such a breath of fresh air to read poems from one our most brilliant minds

I went on a Nikki Giovanni poetry reading binge because she will be at the SC Book Festival in May 2014.

This little anthology of love poems is a selection of some of her earlier poems about relationships, unrequited love, longterm love, and loss. It is a partner book to the volume published in 2009, Bicycles. I shamelessly enjoyed these, because sometimes you just need a good love poem.

My favorites include:
A Poem of Friendship
You Are There
i shall save my poems
for the winter of my dreams...

3.5 rounded up cuz why can’t goodreads give us damn half star ratings yet???

A very cute playfulness in these love poems that I enjoyed a lot. I like when people show the fun sides of love like yeah it’s dramatic and can be painful but when I think about my favourite moments and what made me truly love my partner, it’s in the moments when we’re having the most fun existing with each other.

I know she’s beloved. I know she’s a force. But I just couldn’t get into these at all. The structures and rhymes felt too simple and expected. I recognize that many people find value here, but I read a third of this and put it down.

“I don’t want to be near you for the thoughts we share
But the words we never have to speak”

Nikki Giovanni is so good. It was her and Tupac’s Rose That Grew From Concrete that made me fall in love with poetry. I remember reading this a teen and not quite getting it all. I really enjoyed finally rereading it.

Felt very “roses are red, violets are blue”. Cute easy poems that hone in on the sustainability of loving and being loved.

“no one would say life handed you a silver spoon or golden parachute but you still met married bought a home reared a family
supported a church and kept a mighty faith in your God and each other
they say love/is a many splendored thing but maybe that's because we recognize you loved no matter what the burden you laughed no matter for the tears you persevered in your love

and your garden remains in full bloom”

This book contains simple poems that you can read in an afternoon and beautiful written paragraphs. These poems makes a person sit back and think about things they don't normally think about. Great poems. There is even a poem about 2Pac. Some of my favorites were: A Summer Love Poem, I Do Have My Likes and Dislikes, Just a Simple Declaration of Love, You are There, A Happy Reason and Luxury.

Such a great collection from Nikki Giovanni! A few of my favorite poems: Poetry Is A Trestle, Resignation, I Take Master Card (this one made me want to cheer.) There's a variety of tones and feelings, ranging from silly and light-hearted to serious and thought-provoking. She also explores a variety of themes and topics. While the whole collection is solid, Part III was particularly excellent.

Hearing Madame Giovanni read these books herself was an experience in so grateful to have blessed myself with, what a way to end the year! These poems made me breathless, punched me in the gut, and made me roar with laughter. The poems were so good I had to go back and change my rating for a few other books of poetry I read this year. I started the year with a poetry book and I’m making this the last one I read so I go out riding this high. Do yourself a favor and do the audiobook for this one, you won’t be disappointed!

wool is sheared...silk is spun
weaving is hard...but words are fun

for personal reasons, I will be screaming.

good poetry!

there's a zodiac cancers are cancerous joke and an elegy for 2pac that makes sure to make space for afeni's grief. in "for theresa," giovanni writes, "you came along/ and loved me/ for being black and bitchy/ hateful and scared." from "a theory of pole beans (for ethel and rice)": "they say love/is a many splendored thing/ but maybe that's because we recognize you loved no matter what the burden/ you laughed no matter for the tears/ you persevered in your love/ / and your garden remains in full bloom." in "resignation," she proclaims, "I love you/[...] because the Pope is Catholic/ and most Rabbis Jewish."

a handful of poems I particularly enjoyed--

"I Wrote a Good Omelet"
I wrote a good omelet...and ate a hot poem...
after loving you

Buttoned my car...and drove my coat home...in the rain...
after loving you

I goed on red...and stopped on green...floating
somewhre in between...
being here and being there...
after loving you

I rolled my bed...turned down my hair...slightly
confused but...I don't care...
Laid out my teeth...and gargled my gown...then I stood
...and laid me down...
to sleep...
after loving you

"Love Is"
Some people forget that love is
tucking you in and kissing you "Good night"
no matter how young or old you are

Some people don't remember that love is
listening and laughing and asking questions
no matter what your age

Few recognize that love is
commitment responsibility no fun at all
unless

Love is
You and me

"Things That Go Together"
Let's start with the air which has its airplanes
And thunder
And lightning
And kites

Then think of the bulbs which have shades
And switches
To turn on
When we need night lights

Oysters have seas Some dogs have fleas
though bricks and mortar are sticking

Rock has its roll Bay Bridge: No Toll
and pillows have cases and ticking

And tumbling through Space with a smile on its face
The moon has its wine and its cheeses

The Jeopardy answer is: You and Me
The question is: Who likes squeezes

"And I Have You"
Rain has drops Sun has shine
Moon has beams That make you mine

Rivers have banks Sand for shores
Hearts have heartbeats That make me yours

Needles have eyes Though pins may prick
Elmer has glue To make things stick

Winter has Spring Stockings feet
Pepper has mint To make it sweet

Teachers have lessons Soup du jour
Lawyers sue bad folks Doctors cure

All and all this much is true
You have me And I have you

"Mothers"
the last time i was home
to see my mother we kissed
exchanged pleasantries
and unpleasantries pulled a warm
comforting silence around
us and read separate books

i remember the first time
i consciously saw her
we were living in a three room
apartment on burns avenue

mommy always sat in the dark
i don’t know how i knew that but she did

that night i stumbled into the kitchen
maybe because i’ve always been
a night person or perhaps because i had wet
the bed
she was sitting on a chair
the room was bathed in moonlight diffused through
those thousands of panes landlords who rented
to people with children were prone to put in windows
she may have been smoking but maybe not
her hair was three-quarters her height
which made me a strong believer in the samson myth
and very black

i’m sure i just hung there by the door
i remember thinking: what a beautiful lady

she was very deliberately waiting
perhaps for my father to come home
from his night job or maybe for a dream
that had promised to come by
“come here” she said “i’ll teach you
a poem: i see the moon
the moon sees me
god bless the moon
and god bless me

i taught it to my son
who recited it for her
just to say we must learn
to bear the pleasures
as we have borne the pains

"No Furnaces (For Valentine's Day)"
I don't understand why my hands are cold...What am I trying to prove...That I can keep the house as cold...as you do...even when you're not here...That my feet and hands don't care...I think not...I think it's a simple desire...unstated even to myself...to acknowledge...that when you're not here...it's always cold...and the furnace...can not...possibly...make a difference

"A Happy Reason"
a good book (not necessarily a mystery)...some popcorn with lots of real butter...an overstuffed chair...a fire in the wood stove...quilts on the couch...thermal blankets on the bed...a feather duster waiting to be used...a merlot waiting to be explored...the coffee pot with a timer...the 49crs winning if we get lucky...comic pages in color...intelligent editorials...snow or rain or any inclement weather...or heavy doses of sun...a reason to move or not move...a reason to go or not go no reason to be
anything...
except happy...
with...
you

"Telephone Poem"
Cans and strings and backyard trees
Giggles coming through the wire
Summer mud pies lemonade stands
Hang Up No You Hang Up First

Potatoes must be piled mile high
Then you add the leaves
Daddies always light the fires
Hang Up No You Hang Up First

Marriage children divorce jobs
Ambitions eat our days away
Girl I miss our silly times
Hang Up No You Hang Up First

two longer ones under the cut.

Very short volume of Giovanni's poems. As with any collection of poetry they range from mediocre to very good and will resonate with each reader differently. Her best poems are sly, passionate, and reveal the depths of a life lived fully. Recommended.

One of my favorites:

I Take Master Card

(Charge Your Love to Me)

I've heard all the stories 'bout how you don't deserve
me 'cause I'm so strong and beautiful and wonderful and you could
never live up to what you know I should have but
I just want to let you know:

I take Master Card

You can love me as much as your heart can stand
then put the rest on
account and pay the interest
each month until we get this settled

You see we modern women do comprehend
that we deserve a whole lot more
than what is normally being offered but we are trying
to get aligned with the modern world

So baby, you can love me all
you like 'cause you're pre-approved
and you don't have to sign on
the bottom line

Charge it up
'til we just can't take no more
it's the modern way

I take Master Card
to see your Visa
and I deal with a Discovery but I don't want any American
Express 'cause like the Pointer Sisters say: I need a slow hand

I really enjoyed reading this book because Nikki Giovanni is one of my all time favorite poets. I have prior knowledge, as I have read a couple of her poems before, such as Woman. I loved her use of literary elements-tone, mood, personification, simile, metaphors, etc. Frankly, however, her poems were quite hard to comprehend and complex in this book, but all poems share a similar theme: Love. There is love between friends, family members, pets, etc. I can relate to the theme because I have been loved all my life- by my mom, dad, sister, brother, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. My friends have loved me, too. Thus, reading this book brought back the feelings of giving and receiving love. Her use of tone is very strong- still stuck in my head and I can visualize and hear the whole scene due to her talent in writing poetry. In fact, she is able to really impact me as a reader mentally and emotionally, all the time.

I got married a few weeks ago, so I'm feeling all smooshy inside and wanted to read some love poetry-- thus, this book. 70% of this collection is comprised of "love" poems in the traditional sense-- some lighthearted and whimsical (when I was still teaching, "I Wrote a Good Omelet" was one of my favorites to use in the classroom), some nostalgic and quietly profound. The remainder are about race, politics, civil rights... also "love" poems in a different sense. There were bright spots in each section, but the pieces that resonated most with me were the simple, pensive poems like "You Came, Too," which brought a little tear to my eye. Much of this collection is deceptively simple, and they're not all masterpieces, but there are definitely some gems here.

Wonderful little book of love poems from a very thoughtful poet. I resonated with many of the poems even though I am a middle class white male and the poet is an older black woman, which might speak to the universality of poetry and love. Some of the poems are very light hearted, and some are serious, but you can really hear Ms. Giovanni's voice coming through them all. The book is small and easy to read in a sitting, or two. I read some of them out loud to my wife, which I recommend. All in all, very enjoyable.

And this book is where I fell in love with Nikki Giovanni. I forget whether Ginny discovered this one and recommended it to me or if I did and recommended it to her, but it was one of those books we both fell in love with at the same time, back in college. One of those books that has paid out so many times over in inspiration and love and joy and all the wonderful things that there are about poetry. Just a week or so ago I chose one of these poems to write inside a card for a bridal shower -- everyone loved it. These poems are wonderful. Everything perfect that poetry should be.

My rating here is strictly a reflection of my own personal taste rather than the skill of the poet. I’ve never been a huge fan of poetry, but I keep trying, thinking that someday I’ll find the style that strikes me.

I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and unfortunately it’s still just not for me. Though I did enjoy the longer poems with the denser style such as “The Only True Lovers Are Chefs or Happy Birthday, Edna Lewis.”

I should probably stick to novels. I’m just not sure I’ll ever find a poetry book I can appreciate as much as it deserves.

Everything people said it would be - light and loving, dark and powerful, sweet and sensual, and above all else, unabashedly truthful. I wish we had studied her work in my high school English courses, that we had used her art to talk about things that matter and to explore our identities and privileges. Poems that will stick with me: "Kidnap Poem," "Seduction," When Gamble and Huff Ruled," "Poetry is a Trestle," "Balances," "Resignation," "How Do You Write a Poem?," and "I Take Master Card."

Why didn't anyone tell me how fabulous Nikki Giovanni's poetry is? It's just amazing. I love this book in particular because she writes about love in ALL its forms-- romantic and sexual love, certainly, but also friendship love, love of country, love of people, love of place and time and food and ancestors. It's basically perfect and I love it and I need to read everything she's ever written now, thanks.
