Many books entertain. Some teach. Some reach out and poke me in the gut with a reality that I wasn't previously willing to admit was there. Rarely does a book do all three; Lives does precisely that, and in a gotta-turn-the-next-page sort of way.

It's told in an engaging and jaunty first-person, taking us around a circle of high school friends and acquaintances. Each vignette drew me into one of the characters' interesting worlds, and each proved a compelling roller-coaster ride of life with an often surprising ending.

It's a short book, and an easy read. There are some scenes with significantly adult themes to them; I don't think any of it was overdone, but if you're squeamish over anything that's hardcore then this isn't your book. If, however, you're looking for a good, quick read that's difficult to put down, then JJ McMoon's Lives - Perception is Reality is a great choice.

Un-realistic characters tend to make me cranky, which is one reason why JJ McMoon's book "Lives" kept me in a good mood. And since "Lives" is entirely about characters -- complex characters bursting with authenticity -- we readers can be grateful McMoon crafted them with such obvious care. You will be drawn into their lives, however sordid and tragic they may be, and find yourself connecting with their pain, hope, and ultimately, with their destiny. At times raw and biting, Lives never waivers. It delivers crisp characters, finely drawn with tight writing, passing through an engaging, intelligent story that will leave you wanting more.

Had a chance to read this because JJ wanted my thoughts on doing some video work for the book. I really enjoyed the book and the development of the characters. Their lives were portrayed in a way that made it more realistic, which seemed odd because he was putting them into these very unlikely situations. I would recommend this book to almost anyone.

I would also point out that JJ has produced some videos based off the series. The videos give us another peak into the characters of the book.

I just recently read Lives and found it to angst riddled, thought provoking, and sexually provocative. Not a book for wimps. Don't read this book if you can't handle life as raw, exposed and true. Lives is tapestry of complex characters, masterfully woven by JJ McMoon into a tale that defies you to put it down. You are so caught up in the charters that you can't wait to see who arrives next and how they connect to the existing gang. I see this as a cult movie in the near future to rival Twilight. Great read.

The novel clips along briskly, full of fist-to-the-gut lines, realistic characters and memorable scenes.

What is a real credit to the writing is the author deftly telling eight separate stories, each from the 1st-person point-of-view, while flipping forward and backward in time within each of those lives, while reeling out a thread that ties them all together by the end.

This thread is the question: What do we make of coincidences in our lives? Are they truly chance encounters or milestones on destiny's path?
