As a child, Cathy Marie Hake had an imaginary playmate. Now "grown up," she indulges in a host of imaginary friends as she writes. She teasingly says she decided if those voices in her head were talking, she might as well write down what they said and make a living by doing it. She met her sweetheart in the High School department at church and married him after finishing nursing school. They live in Southern California and have two children and two dogs (one of them even moos - one of the dogs that is, not the kids). Faith in God, a loving family, and a wacky sense of the ridiculous keep her going.

Known for surfing across the kitchen on a dropped dill pickle slice, waterskiing on sea anemone spit, and using Right Guard® as hair spray; she considers herself living proof that God does, indeed, possess a healthy sense of humor.

Cathy loves classical music, romantic getways with her husband, and Diet Pepsi Free®. "I need chocolate to survive, love my friends, and enjoy a deep personal relationship with the Lord. Although an extrovert, I'm very conservative on a personal level."

In her writing, Cathy attempts to capture a unique glimpse of life and how a man and woman can overcome obstacles when motivated by love. In her inspirational pieces she enjoys the freedom of showing how Christ can enrich a loving couple's relationship.

This continues the story of the Chance brothers. The six Chance brothers each have their own story beginning with California Chances. In this book, the brides are from Kentucky.

Last Chance by Cathy Marie Hake: Widow Lovejoy Spencer escorts her sister and 2 neighbor girls who are to marry the MacPherson brothers, former residents of the mountain community in Kentucky, to Reliable, California. She wants to be sure the three brothers will be good husbands before she returns to Salt Lick Holler. But she keeps running into widower Daniel Chance and his 2 young daughters and the rest of the Chance family. She has many occasions to use her vast knowledge of remedies as the healer in Salt Lick Holler. When it comes time for her to return home, will Daniel be able to let her go?

Chance Adventure by Kelly Eileen Hake: Logan Chance dreams of having some adventures before he settles down. He's heard so much about Salt Lick Holler, Kentucky, that he decides that will be a great place to have some adventures. So he and his youngest brother Bryce travel there hoping to hunt and fish and maybe find God's will for their life. Of course they come bearing gifts from the MacPherson brides, so end up staying in the barn of Widow Willow Hendrick who has continued as the healer when Lovejoy left. She is training Hattie Thales in the art of yarbs and healing. Will Logan's adventure turn to love?

Chance of a Life Time by Kelly Eileen Hake: Bryce is quiet and doesn't say much, but he's made an attachment with little Jamie Thales and his widowed ma Daisy. He decides to stay the winter at Salt Lick Holler and court Daisy. She's lost a lot in her young life and having a 5-year-old son with palsy demands most of her time and abilities to make a living. She doesn't want pity or charity. Can she turn everything to God so she can find love again?

I love reading these stories where each leads right into the next and continues on.

For some reason this book reminded me a little of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. Maybe it is because there are 5 Chance brothers and some of them are still bachelors and one a widower when Lovejoy brings 3 young girls to town to be brides for the 3 MacPherson men. This is a 3 part story which inevitable winds up with several people saying “I Do” before the close of the book.

Thought this book was fun, I enjoy light reading at night and that seems to be my best time to read. I love the time period that this book was set in(1872). How the women worked, lived and loved. Would like to read more of her books.

I read all the Chance books before I owned a Kindle. I own this book in paperback but would totally pay for it again to have the ebook. The whole Chance series is wonderful, but I became particularly fond of these Kentucky Chances. They are very different from the Western Chances. This is not necessarily a stand-alone collection. It could be read as one, but I suspect you will develop a need to read the previous Chance books. Seriously. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Christian Romance fiction.

The main character is written as a very strong woman. Despite her past, she still helped others. She did not play a victim. We need young women in this culture to learn this

9/12/2010- Last Chance by Cathy Marie Hake.

Daniel, a Chance who had loved his wife and lost her and lived in sorrow.
Lovejoy- a healer from Kentucky who came to Reliable, CA to see her sister and 2 other gals married off to the McPherson brothers.

9/13/2010
Logan Chance needs to get away. With 4 married brothers, their wives, and all those young'uns he needs to get away. Where better then Salt Lick Hollar, Kentucky where his sister-in-law, Lovejoy, came from.

Bryce helps encourage the other 4 brothers in letting Logan go and somehow he ends up getting volunteered to go as well.

They go and stay in the barn of Miz Willow and Miz Hattie. The healer who taught Lovejoy all she knows and the new healer who took Lovejoys place.

The boys did not know they were walking into a hollar full of mama's thinking they were rich bachelors for their unmarried daughters. Logan gets more adventure then he could dream of.

9/13/2010
Bryce stays on with Logan into the fall and starts enjoying the company of Daisy and her son Jamie. They had moved in with Hattie and Miz Willow after her home burned down. Being a widow for 5 years, Daisy is determined to make it on her own and provide for her son. Bryce wants to take care of them both and take them back to Reliable, California as his wife and son.

"A woman makes for a better wife if she's got memories stored up of how her man courted her. On cold nights when the babies are sick and the money's tight, a gal needs to harken back to her sweetheart days when her man promised he'd stand by her side through thick and thin." pg. 38

The quote is taken from "Last Chance", which I think I liked most of the trio.

One major thing to mention is that the Hake women chose to write all of the dialogue with a strong Kentucky accent, inflection, and vocabulary, which took me a while to get used to reading. Unfortunately, I don't think this one was quite as good as the first one: California Chances: Three Brothers Play the Role of Protector as Romance Develops. (which I loved!)

It was kind of a bummer, actually, because I naturally wanted everyone to stay together forever. Oh well, it's true to life. There were lots of things in these three stories that were, sadly, true to life.

Although somewhat saddening, it was at the same time uplifting, endearing, and encouraging; still completely worth the read.

I love the ones where there are 3 or 4 stories in one book! That moves them along so much faster! And actually until you think about it (most of the time) you can't really tell what the difference between the short ones and the regular ones is! As in how it's so much shorter when you don't really get the feeling any of the story is missing.

It was really hard for me to get into this book. The story is of 3 bothers and how God is able to bring them together with each ones wives. They go through the typical trials and tribulations but it all works out in the end.

Good book set in Kentucky 1872. Loved reading how it was maintaining a household back then. The Chance brothers find wives in the most unlikely places while helping the town of Salt Lick Holler. Would recommend this book.
