Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
Holla the wood faerie!! This issue was quite an emotional rollercoaster! I swear things are getting more and more intense between Akito and all the other members of the zodiac. Akito definitely was in best form regarding his cruelty and ruthlessness. >_<
Highlights of this volume:
”Who the hell do you think you are?! Ah?!” “I’m me.”
OMG!!! Yuki-kun actually accepting who he is?! I never thought I’d live to see this day but damn Tohru did it! She managed to give him confidence and I’m so proud!!! <333
”You should have been the one to die. However you look at it, everyone would have been a lot happier if you had never been born.”
How dare he say something like that?! How dare he to threaten and abuse all the members of the zodiac?! Who is he to treat them like that?! Akito needs to be stopped and I hope Tohru will do it!! My poor Kyo… he actually begged him to stop… and it broke my heart when he cried… *sobs* T_T
”She knew that if she let go of my hand … I would… probably never have come back. I might never have trusted anyone ever again.”
Tohru is an angel and I’ll defend her until I die!!! <333 Akito better don’t come my way or I’ll tell him something!!! *rolls up her sleeves*
”I want to be near you until the time when I must go away. I want to be with you ‘til the end.”
Natsuki Takaya, how can you hurt me like that?! I refuse to believe that this is going to happen! I simply refuse it!! There’s no way Tohru, Shigure or Shishou would let that happen!!! NO WAY!!!
”Akito you’re… mad right now, aren’t you? When you’re mad, you take it out on others. You … can’t take it out on her. Akito, what’s wrong? Why are you so mad? Did something… happen?”
BLESS Momiji Sohma!!! That little cheerful boy has the purest of hearts!!! <333 He was the only one, that innocent, precious and young boy, was really the only one who had the courage to stand up for Tohru!!! Gosh I can’t even!!! I love him so much!!! <333 He knew Akito would hurt him if he chose to stand in his way, yet he still did!!! BLESS HIS GOLDEN HEART!!! <333 *cries*
Holy crap. Holy shit. Holy hot dogs on a flaming barbecue.
I was literally shaking with anger, no, murderous rage last night as I read this volume. I can't even rate it because I can't tell if I liked it or hated it. What I hated, despised, wanted to strangle, was Akito. If that motherf*cker lays one more of his slimy, disgusting hands on my Kyo, I will rip. him. apart.
I can't really explain my torrent of emotions I felt while reading it, so I'll just explain it in gifs.
This is me as I'm typing this review:
And finally, this is what I want to do to Akito. Right now.
WHY!? JUST WHY!? HOW CAN ALL THIS BE HAPPENING!? IT MAKES ME SO UPSET! I CAN'T HANDLE MUCH MORE OF WHAT'S GOING ON HERE! Okay, people! Listen up! This volume has a whole bunch "WTF!?" moments! It's so filled with juicy new twists and turns! Hell, you even see some of the truth be revealed to you! Finally, right? Took long enough to find out what the "curse" really is. Don't worry. I won't tell you. I'll let you find out about that for yourself. But man... wasn't that crazy? I was so angry throughout most of the book (no thanks to Akito) and was at the edge, literally, at the edge of my seat because I just HAD to know what was going to happen next! ...I even fell off my chair because of the suspense! Oh, man! The drama! The drama! It hurts the brain but at the same time... IT'S JUST TOO GOOD!!!
Takaya-sensei!!! YOU ARE MAKING ME GO INSANE WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH THIS SERIES!!! IT'S TOO AWESOME!!! XD Whoa! The things that happen here. I'm at a lost for words. It was as if she decided to make this the big "HOT DAMN!" volume. Not only do we get to see more of some characters that we don't know much about yet but we also find out some secrets and we get little hints of what might happen in the future. I love Takaya-sensei's ability to be able to hint you along with what's going to happen. I feel that it tries to slowly put you into the position of the characters so that way... YOU'D BE EQUALLY UPSET AS THEY ARE!!! BAH! Why is some of this stuff happening? I don't get it! Well, I do but you know what I mean! And I must say, I love that she's also adding info about the lesser known characters (I said this in my last review, too, but I just can't help it). I now know Kazuma is a clutz! I guess that explains why he sucks at cooking! XD
TOHRU!!! *Blubbers* The poor girl. She went through so much in this volume. Only because her association with the Sohmas. If only someone would beat the crap out of Akito so that he would leave them all alone. But nooooo... Stupid bastard. Anyway, I really hope she finds a way to free the Sohmas. I want that just as much as she does. Yuki is really showing improvement. I'm shocked! He seems to be handling that freak well! I'm actually kinda proud of him! I hope he continues to get more awesome. (He's not as arrogant anymore. Keyword: as) Wah! Kyo! Oh my poor baby Kyo! Come here and let me cuddle with you because, damn it, you deserve it! Dude, I'm so happy he... said... something awesome! XD It made me squee with delight! And... he really is tragic... I want him to be happy! *Flails* I wish I could be more specific but I can't give spoilers! >_< Just know that... AKITO IS THE BIGGEST PRICK ALIVE!!! THIS IS NOT A JOKE! IT IS THE TRUTH! I HATE HIM! UGH! WASHING YOUR HANDS? REALLY? REALLY? YOU HAD TO GO THERE!? YOU JUST HAD TO GO THERE! IF ANYONE IS DISGUSTING, IT'S YOU, AKITO!!!
*Ahem* As you can see... I am not a fan of Akito. He's the main reason why I was pulling my hair out whilst reading this. Granted, if it wasn't for him, the series wouldn't be as entertaining... but that doesn't make me like him more than roaches. I still think he needs to be shot multiple times and thrown into the ocean but I digress. Let me change the subject into something more epic... WE GOT TO SEE RIN CLEARLY NOW! ISN'T SHE GORGEOUS? I love her! She's so pretty! Her sense of style is epic and as a Zodiac member (like you didn't know), wow! Elegant! I really can't wait until she's the main focus of what's going on. I think it's in another two volumes from now but whatever. I'm just happy we are getting to see her. A lot of the other characters were here, too. (Haru and Hatori included!!!) It made me glad to see them all hanging around together having fun. I will say this, though... they were all unhappy. I hated seeing that. They have so much pain... so much suffering... you really start wondering how in the hell are they going to find their happiness? Honestly, it's looking a bit hopeless but... Tohru made it her mission to break evil curse of the stupid so... there's some hope, right!?
Need I say how awesome this series is? Can you not see how fangirly I am over it? I'm so sucked into these characters that I just can't help but want more! More! I want to know what's going to happen next! The way this book ended... it leaves you wanting to yell and scream and tear down buildings! I know I'm still in the "WTF!?" mode. It's a good thing I get to continue this manga right after I finish this review. Otherwise... I think I'd go to the Corner of Woe with my Spork and just have a go at it. But that's not the case so HAHA! Alright. Enough of my sillyness. I need to get going and read the next volume already because Ima bout to 'splode from not knowing! I know you want to know too~ *Smirks* See you soon? Naturally! GO READ!!!
"I want to be near you, until the time comes when I must go away. I want to be with you until the end."
🐑 This volume is Hiro! 🐑 And what an annoying little punk he is!
Ok... so this was abso-freaking-lutely fantastic! I cannot believe how emotionally charging this volume was. I had to put this book down several times because I was shaking and couldn't take how worked up I was. And in a good way, trust me.
This volume we continue to follow Tohru and the Sohma's on their summer vacation, however the ever looming effect of Akito continues to place an unforgiving shadow over the gang. It is in this volume that was finally get to see Akito interact with Kyo, was he decides to abruptly request to speak with him. The harsh reminder of his unavoidable confinement after graduation pushes a realisation out of Kyo that trust me, will make you cry. And if not cry, at least scream from happiness. There is no less of an emotion to come from this, trust me. It is really after this interaction with Akito that we begin to see Kyo mellow out and come to terms with his future, because before he lives locked in the same room for the remainder of his life, he is able to spend time with someone he cherishes and makes him happy, which is more than he ever imagined. I cannot contain it! I love it too much!
This volume is filled with love and support. We see how huge of an impact being a kind person can have on other people. We see that Tohru has helped both Yuki and Kyo change. Yuki is becoming more self aware of his insecurities, and is learning to push above them and find his own place in the world. We see Kyo filled with so much hatred and sadness, learn that he too has beautiful traits that can be liked by other people. And it is really in this volume that we begin to see that this kindness of Tohru's may be doing more than just curing the broken personalities of these two. Re-reading this series was one of the best ideas I have had. It helps remind me that there is good out there, and that rising above my personal battles will be rewarded.
I finished watching the Fruits Basket anime a few weeks ago and was very disappointed that there were only 26 episodes. I love these characters so much, I needed more. So I decided to start reading the manga.
This was great. Just as good (if not better) than the anime. All my favorite characters, like Kyo and Yuki and Shigure, are here. Yay, Fruits Basket! I really think Akito is an intriguing character. I wouldn't say I like him/her but s/he is a very complex character, one that you can't even bring yourself to hate because you feel sorry for him/her.
Oh man this was stressful. So much abuse, so much sweet, so much awful. This was scary. At some point this stopped being cute and became scary. I don't know if I can take another, what, 10 books of this? I'm so afraid for them all.
Akito, we have known he is abusive towards the zodiac members, but this is perhaps the first time we have seen first hand his cruelty. We also now have the revelation of who he is in the zodiac, as well as his desperation to keep them all close together. This volume is also the turning point in the series where Tohru decides she will try to find a way to break their curses so they can be freed from their spirits. And now I feel the series will truly take off.
Side note: Although Takaya is a master at story telling, I noticed in her artwork her proportions are way off especially in volumes 10-11 where I noticed the necks are quite long and the arms as well. That was something I noticed which took me out of the story as a reader.
This volume was INSANE - literally the most emotionally charged volume so far. We get so many answers & revelations, it made my head spin.
• Kyo’s confession (!!!) • Huge reveal of who Akito is • Finding out what the “curse” actually entails • Tohru’s revelation for her part in the curse • The final zodiac reveal
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The way Akito has power over Sohma family is really scary. She's the abuser they can't get rid of. It's truly chilling and difficult to read about how this delusional psychopath gets into their heads and make them hate themselves... I didn't expect this manga to touch on such serious mental health issues and now I'm even more glad I picked it up.
4.5, "That she'll get excited about tiny things... and smile... and be happy when we're together. Why?" -Kyo
"It's pointless to just think about those things. The traveler didn't think about them. That might be stupid to some people... but it's not stupid to me." -Momiji
Oh my god. The librarian was right! She likes manga too, and she said this series was really good, but didn't get SUPER good until volume 11. And she was so right!!!!
XD XD XD XD XD XD XD!!!!!!!!
this volume was AMAZING! Really giving some amazing character development to both kyo and Tohru. I love them both. :D at first glance, she really isn't much of a strong female lead. Which are so important for young readers. But as the series progresses and especially here in volume 11 we get to see a special kinda a strength she has. She's ditzy, yeah, which is part of what makes her so adorable/annoying. But she's also so loving and positive and sacrificing. How she's so willing to throw herself into everything to protect other and help them stay happy. And to try and protect those she's cares about.
XD sweetest gal ever.
& kyo! My poor sweet lonely angry kyo! He's come such a long way from the beginning of the series. Learning to not blame himself so much and get along with others and trying to calm his anger. Thinking he might be able to love someone and be worth loving.
And HOW DARE YOU COME ALONG AND TRY TO TAKE IT ALL AWAY FROM HIM!?!?!?
Oh my god. Akito. I hate you so fucking much, I can't stand it. Major creepy rape vibes from this guy. And he wants to lock my dear Kyo away forever?!?! Never let him leave? Never let anyone in the family leave his "party"?
No. Fuck you. I hate you. Go die in a hole. You are the worst kind of person.
This book made me happy and sad and angry. I want to throw something. I want to jump in the book and save them all. And hug them so I can snuggle with cute fuzzy critters. ;)
any book that gets such a strong emotional reaction from its readers definitely deserves 5 stars.
You know, unless it made them angry because the writing sucked or the characters are cardboard cutouts.
None of which happened in "fruits basket". The characters and plot are amazing. The art isn't anything to complain about, but it's definitely not the greatest. But stories and characters totally make up for it 200%.
:D this is my favorite shojo manga now. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes manga. Particularly shojo manga. (The kind aimed at girls.) also, if you like urban fantasy, comedy, and romance, I'd definitely recommend "fruits basket" to you. :)
I'm beginning to find out why one acts one way and how some can keep it to themselves, while others grow selfesh of it. In this book the sohma's 'god' came to visit their vacation home leaving many to fear and some to move on.
