pretty much a waste of time.

As a fan of fantasy, hero fantasy, and martial arts, I found this book to be excellent.
A very readable "Westernized" eastern philosophy, an excellent narrative, and a complex main character that is revealed in stages quite well.
Some people may not like the lead character's tendency to be flippant, but if you like the Vlad Taltos books you'll definitely like this one.

Шетърли, както обикновено, е изключително сладкодумен, а героят му е цапнат в устата, колкото протагонистите на Стивън Бруст. Похватът му да задава неочаквана дълбочина в един лек фентъзиен сюжет си проличава и тук. Героят му се изправя пред редица перипети, които го карат дълбоко да ревизира ценностната си система и да се запита какво е вярност и на кого я дължи.
Минус е, че историята е зверски отворена и като финал, и като незавършени сюжетни препратки. Явно е било планирано продължение, но над 30 години по-късно се вижда, че такова няма да има.
А комбинацията между магия и бойни изкуства, преплетена в двете сюжетни линии, е нещото, което прави тази книга съкровище.
Рифкин е скитащ се боец, който по случайност бива спасен и нает от симпатична вещица. Той трябва да помогне в опазването на крапостта на брат и от амбициите на влиятелен негов съсед. Гарнизонът с който разполагат е малоброен, но има доста изненадващи умения. Когато се изправя пред фактите, Рифкин разбира, че се е замесил в нещо много по-голямо и сложно от провинциален конфликт. А читателят разбира, че героят е нещо много повече от това за което се представя. Като цяло забавно и неангажиращо четиво, но с нотка на морален конфликт, което го прави доста силно, освен приятно.

Really enjoyed it. The hero is not your usual hero, and he becomes more surprising as the book goes on.
The story is told by our hero, Rifkin, when he's an old man. His granddaughter asks him to write his life before he goes off wandering the world again, so he does, and it really is like he's telling a story, complete with thoughts about how she wouldn't be satisfied with the detail of this part or that, so begrudgingly- but fondly - he goes into more detail.
I like Will Shetterly's work, as do I his wife's (Emma Bull) and the rest of what once Cats Laughing. I just wish he'd write more, she said plaintively.

September 10, 2012Very interesting take on what makes a good man and how and when to really fight.Sure it is pure fantasy.But well written characterization. Through bits and pieces you see the history of this man, and the question comes, is it the soul that interprets the actions? Who is the main character, really? What in this makes him choose? and how will he choose to fight?
This is a book I keep.

My first (& only) reread since 1994. It held up remarkably well, although the narrative voice reminds me more of Brust than Shetterly's other work... which may be why I liked it so much, as I'm very fond of Brust.

Dumb ending
Story was going great until the last chapter. And then it ended. Felt like Shetterly had a max word limit which he hit before he could write a conclusion. Or maybe he was hoping to write a sequel? Whatever, it was very unsatisfying.
