Excellent overview of martial arts movies that spans decades covering the earliest martial arts films with chapters on Kurosawa's historic films and even some of the 19th century judo champions who inspired his films but mostly focusing on the golden age of Hong Kong martial arts films from the late 60s to the early 80s. Each chapter is broken up into a theme and most discuss important figures in the history of Martial arts movies the longest chapters being those of Bruce Lee and Lau Kar-Lung who is referred to by his Mandarin film credit name Liu Chia-liang. The book is very well written and just has this beautiful flow to it that keeps you invested. The information is well researched and is full of information newcomers to the genre will need to know. I think this books works best as an introduction to the genre however there are a few things here and there that will even be new to seasoned experts of the genre. One thing to note is there is a significant amount of film summaries in this text but he writes them well so it never feels like a chore to read them, even being familiar with these films. I highly recommend this book to francophones looking to get into the genre.
