This was another great one as we see Emma go to NYC and well in college and meeting her best friend Christie and well the college life there and then crazy challenges and the return of Ian and maybe a love triangle and discovering about mutants and then meeting this girl Astrid Bloom and well she is also a telepath and I love the way their friendships develop and well its all fun and all until the big twist happens and its so good and it becomes so climactic and actually like one of those thrilling tv serials from the 2000s lol and yeah it leads to great twists and a climactic ending with Astrid and Ian and leads well into Emma joining the hellfire club!
Its easily one of the best volumes and I love the way the writer explored Emma and gave her a solid origin story and made it so compelling and great new enemies ad challenges and all. Idk I just personally loved the series and it had great artwork throughout and made for such an amazing read this Monday evening! So yeah a definite recommend from me! <3!
This was probably my least favorite section of her series — i feel like there could have been a much richer origin than fighting over boys/men, but overall getting to know who she used to be while knowing who the character is now was fantastic, and I liked it enough that I’m going to collect the series in issue form if I can track them all down!
“Bloom” is a perfect title for this collection of issues 13-18 of the origin of future White Queen Emma Frost. No longer a teen, no longer totally in ignorance of her expanding mental powers – and no longer in ignorance that she is the only person in the world born with extra abilities – Emma Frost builds upon her experiences (reported in Volumes 1 & 2 of this graphic novel, or issues 1 – 12 of the comic is is reprinted from) to find her place in the world.
In this collection, Emma Frost, having walked away from her family money and influence, as well as her native Boston, has enrolled in New York's Empire State University. Here, she encounters a faculty member who was previously a teacher at her prep school – as well as an influential person in her teenage life. She also encounters a roommate, a potential love interest or two – and another mutant psychic.
With every set of stories, Karl Bollers builds upon his earlier work, and shows the growth – in physical stature, in maturity, and unfortunately in cynicism, of Miss Emma Frost. This “issue” (or set of 6 issues, from the original comic) is the finest of the three collections. They build and expand upon the first two collections, but present someone who – by the last panel – is definitely a woman who knows who she is, and who she considers “friends” (hint: no one), and who she doesn't (hint: everyone else).
At this point in the collection, the only thing missing in the creation of the White Queen is to for her to actually attain the power and influence she is destined for (and, of course, to don the famed white corset). A fourth book is unnecessary, however, as the “origin” of Emma Frost is effectively complete at the end of this reprinted collection.
As with the earlier two collections in this series, there is a theme to the comics reprinted, and a clear conclusion to the story when we hit the end of the last comic in the collection. It is not simply “the next X books in the series”. And, as was true with the 2nd volume, the writer and artist successfully collaborate to successfully illustrate a mentalist using her powers – which, if you stop to think about it, is NOT the easiest thing to communicate via drawings.
My suggestion: Treat Volume 1 of this collection simply as a gateway into Volume 2. (There's no need to read it otherwise.) Then, consider Volume 2 as an entertaining build-up to this collection. (There IS reason to read that one, but while much better than Volume 1, it's not yet up to the quality of this final collection.)
RATING: 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4 stars where necessary.
2019 review: I really liked that Emma got to meet someone else with powers! It's an interesting first to show for her, and we get to see how this affects her opinion of other mutants. I really liked the story and art here, and just wish that this series had continued. I would have read so many more of these!
Es una historia de manual, adivino por donde van a ir los tiros a cada segundo pero no por ello es una mala obra, de hecho de las tres es mi favorita y la que de verdad nos muestra más del personaje que va a ser.
Tbh my least favourite of the 3 stories. It certainly shows where Emma got her hard edge from. But honestly none of the characters were sympathetic, the only person I felt sorry for was Max. Also did Emma just completely forget about Christian.
This series went from pretty good to meh by the end of it. I love Emma though and oddly enough, she was never the problem. The storylines were cliched and predictable but still entertaining.
It's interesting that 9/10, the people harming her were human. This totally explains why she doesn't trust many people later on.
I recommend the series if you like the character and are out of any of her other stories to read.
Predictable, but I appreciated that the characters were pretty much clothed throughout. This is unusual for other iterations of Emma Frost! Nice to enjoy the character without feeling like I was a voyeur (seriously, she's almost naked in her costume in the newest comic run).
pretty good, but i hate that this is the end of this series. there really isn't an end, and i know she goes to be with the X-men, but i'd still like the details of how she got there...
Emma Frost is one of my favorite Marvel Characters so I am ecstatic about getting the chance to collect these comics. Her story is pretty intense, sometimes sad and sometimes surprising.
