Enjoyable Paranormal Historical Romance!
What a fantastic twist to put in a Historical Romance. It's bad enough that the Civil War is going on but when you add a plague of rouge vampires to the mix, the fight between the North and South gets put on the back burner as Cole (Texas Sheriff) and Megan (half vampire), along with a few troops fight to put a stop to the spreading blood disease before it spreads nationwide.
The romance was such a tease throughout the whole book and I have to say that as I patiently waited for an erotic love scene between Cole and Megan, I was totally surprised how the author took beautiful words to describe the act of sex. Her words were very visionary and I found myself liking it as though I was reading erotica words.

Quick Take: The setting and integration with actual historical events is quite riveting. However, the romance and character development felt a bit flat to me. All told, I'm not sorry to have read it.
This book initially caught my eye when I saw the title (anything starting with "Night of the" is bound to be horror-rific!) and read the book's description, noted above. You'll notice that the blurb is not completely clear on the setting of the story. So I'll begin this review by noting that the book is a piece of historical fiction and urban fantasy. It takes place on the borderlands created by the American Civil War, and involves characters that have varying degrees of involvement with the conflict. Against this backdrop, a threat has secretly yet violently been appearing throughout the country: vampirism. Far from seductive and romantic, this affliction of frenzy and bloodthirst threatens to stretch and possibly break the already-delicate tensions of the war.
I found the choice of setting to be quite appealing for the insertion of a vampire tale. Think about it: what better time and place for vampirism to boom than during a bloody ground war? Ms. Graham has obviously done a boatload of research on the Civil War; it absolutely shows in her descriptions. One is thrown into the chaos of battle at recognizable locales and amidst historically significant political events. Having myself lived in Washington, DC I could clearly envision the city at that critical stage in time. The overcrowded medic tents on the mall green, the construction of museums, the lush forests on the edge of the town…it's all quite vivid.
Given the attention paid to the setting, I would say that one ought to have at least a passing interest in Civil War history. A basic familiarity with names, dates, battles or organizations of the era wouldn't hurt, either. If one doesn't have either, however, I'd imagine they would by book's end. ^_^
As for the specific plot threads, I was less taken. The book centers on two characters, the stoic human sheriff Cole Granger (whom one will recognize if they've read Graham's Night of the Wolves, which is based in the same "world"), and the intense half-vamp Megan Fox (no relation to the actress ^_^). Theirs is a slow burn romance--there are no sensual or even romantic implications until well into the story. And the connection is quite subtle as compared to the plot thread involving the vampire threat. For a book billed as having "eternal passion" and "potent attraction," I was surprised by the fact.
I also didn't find the action scenes to be extremely visual or thrilling, though a fair amount of intrigue was infused into the plot. Indeed, the pace of the plot is not frenetic (even when it intends to be), but more temperate with a slowly building threat. All told, I wasn't gripped throughout, only mildly curious as to how the various threads would tie together. There was a series of attacks every so often, interspersed with anticipation of said attacks. Wasn't terribly thrilling, to me (with a couple of exceptions).
I did enjoy being in Megan's head. She's a strong willed yet vulnerable character, and I wish more was revealed and discussed about her. There was a plot element that was hinted as important, but didn't come to much in my opinion. I can only assume it will be used as a piece for a future book. Or perhaps it might have been more understandable had I read Night of the Wolves? I don't know.
Overall, I found this book to be worth reading. I was quite taken by the broader elements, though left wanting with the more specific ones. And whatever this book is officially billed as, I'd call it an historical urban fantasy with some romantic elements.

December 23, 2014I found this to be a fun read. Yes, I said fun even though there are horrible vampire attacks. I loved the mix of paranormal and historical elements. I'll never think of some of the well-known names in American history in the same manner again. Ms. Graham wrote a very satisfying story for her fans to enjoy. The beginning was full of danger and questions. The middle is perfectly balanced with plot and character development. The ending holds many surprises, big battles and hope for the future. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

I never read Historical Romance before the twist was amazing and awesome to. Cole and Megan love for each other was like MMMMMMMMMMM.
But i wanted it to be more action to it also thats why it got 4 stars from me

I never read Historical Romance before the twist was amazing and awesome to. Cole and Megan love for each other was like MMMMMMMMMMM.

Cody, Brendan, and Cole are all fighting...but not against the North or South. They're fighting a much darker force, one that the rest of the country is ignorant about, something of myths and legends: vampires. Then Megan enters their lives, claiming to be Cody's sister. She seems to be fighting on the same side they are. They accept fairly quickly that she is who she claims to be, but can they trust her? Megan knows a lot about vampires; her and Cody are both half-breeds, so she proves to be a valuable member of the group. Can they eliminate the "disease" before it's too late?
My opinion: I actually really like this book. I wasn't sure I would because I'm not too fond of historical novels, as a general rule. However the writing was superb and the characters were really well developed. You could really feel the connection between Megan and Cole right away, but of course Cole was the stubborn one of the group, not willing to trust her easily. She is a very tough, capable woman, and she doesn't let the guys put her in a corner. She might be a female but she's not helpless, although it's not easy to convince the sexist men of this time period of that. Megan is convinced throughout the book that her and Cody's father is fighting along side them, helping them out. Everyone is very skeptical of this and he chooses not to show himself to anyone but she keeps faith that it's true, that her father is a good man in spite of being a vampire. Your heart aches for her, because you want it to be true also. I am very glad I got the opportunity to read this book, it really was an interesting and, at times, suspenseful read. I look forward to reading more books from Heather Graham.

I received this book from NetGalley as an ARC. I have to say that this is not the kind of book that I would normally read. I was honestly expecting a cheesy paranormal romance novel with lots of steamy scenes and no plot. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Graham sets this vampire novel during the American Civil War and there is quite a bit of historical content in this novel. I wouldn't say that Graham goes in depth about the war but at the same time I found that I had never read anything quite like this. A book that combines historical fiction and romance. As a history minor in university, I found that I was intrigued by this spin on history. I liked the direction that the book was going in and for the most part it kept me entertained and interested. In fact when the book was done I was left wanting a bit more. I almost felt that the ending was rushed a bit. The author could have taken the time to develop the plot and add more to it. When I finished reading the book I just felt that there was something missing. I really liked the characters in the book and I also would have liked to know a bit more about Megan Fox's relationship with her mother and her father. Overall, I have to say that I enjoyed this book and I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Heather Graham has a wonderful talent for taking bits of history and blending them in with urban fantasy. With Night of the Vampires, set during the Civil War, she creates an alternate history during which our nation was divided and watched brothers fight against each other for what they believed in, while vampires took advantage of the great death tolls to feed and replenish their numbers. In the meantime, catch Night of the Wolves also by Heather Graham, released November 2009. I believe it is the first in this series of historical/paranormal fiction.

This book wasn't as tense as the first of the series however, it was a bit more dull. I will read the next one in the series, keeping my fingers crossed that the children of Lawrence Fox finally get to meet their father. I'll be a bit upset if this series goes on and on for several more books before the father appears in their lives. He made a brief appearance in the end but never fully interacted with his daughter or son. Perhaps he never will which would end up as a big bummer.

I was confused at first with the new location and sibling aspect, but quickly understood the new story dynamic. Alex and Cody were present, but Megan and Cole are the focus of this storyline. The history and play on the civil war was very prominent with everlasting major locations and battles being discussed. The scenes with President Lincoln and General Lee were noteworthy and brought an interesting view of the war and soldiers. Plenty of dark intrigue and action, with a bit of mystery and romance are interwoven with this storyline. The church scene and Priest were probably my favorite! The ending was sweet and I hope book three brings us a chance for the dad and the siblings to all meet and be happy.

Interesting idea to have vampires fight vampires in the Civil War!
Heather Graham actually has a better book with vampires. It has much more romance, set in this century or maybe last but it goes back to vampires fighting vampires during the Civil War. Blood Moon something.
That book was phenomenal!
This book was good. Parts very good. But a lot of bland history lessons are given. I love history but this was bland and a lot of conjecture.
The romance wasn’t extremely hot or passionate feeling. To me it’s worth a read but not a keep.

another Heather Graham book this one having to do with half human/half Vampires trying to help prevent a seriously bad out break of vampire disease being caused by certain vampires along the way Cole Granger and his friends meet up with Cody's half sister and together they find and stop as much death as they can and killing lots of undead that just need to stay dead..also had me going trying to figure out who the bad parson was the whole way lol..nice twist to it

I liked the characters but I thought the girl was a little weak for such a powerful vampire. I still liked the book and the ending surprised me. I totally guessed wrong on the bad guy. I like it when I don't see the end coming. Still a great book in spite of the romance. Love the mystery.

It was more like historical fiction with a sprinkle of romance. Not what i was expecting the constant talk of war politics drove me crazy. The plot centered more on that than relationship development. Although i did enjoy The vampire battles which were very well written and exciting. But if you are expecting a hot romance that keeps you at the edge of your seat than this not the book for you. It would be better not to be marketed as a romance since that seemed more like a subplot from beginning to end.

Fun read in the Vampire series! This takes place during the Civil War when ‘good’ vampires and brave soldiers must unite to rid the world of the newly dead evil spirits.

Review (with a few details that might be spoilerish):
The historical details are what really make this story come alive. Things like the Pinkerton Agency, Lincoln's work on the Capitol, actual Civil War battles, and the Smithsonian Castle. I found these inclusions all the more interesting because I just spent the last year living in Washington D.C. so I was able to reconcile words on the page to reality, all seeming very accurate.
Using Lincoln as a side character was a risky move and one could have easily become sidetracked by such an important figure, but the two worlds of reality and fiction were seamlessly woven together. Lincoln speaks on the subject of a supernatural plague as though it was an entirely conceivable idea that poses a very real threat, further stating that "the country will be united against this cause, as one, as humanity, despite the great divide that separates them" and it was easy to picture a vampire uprising during the Civil War. His rationale and compassion shine even in this fictional setting. These consistencies in behavior are what make him a believable.
History isn't the only successful area of the book and we are also treated to thrilling scenes of action and adventure, all surrounding a passionate romance between Cole and Megan. This romance begins gradually and slowly simmers to a boil. I found Cole to be an honorable hero, very cowboy, and it was sweet to know that he only hesitated to act on his attraction to Megan because she was his friend Cody's little sister, not because she was a vampire as one might assume. And there is just something sexy when a guy finds himself so conflicted that he curses under his breath, turns and grabs the girl for a scorching hot kiss- so primal and raw, as if his actions are just out of his control and fighting them would be pointless. I love scenes like that! *spoiler* And it was gratifying to get a traditional happily-ever-after out of such a dire situation like the Civil War.
One of my favorite scenes:
"I can ride any way you want me to,"she assured him.
Cole stared at her, a brow slightly hiked, a small smile curling into his features. She flushed.
"Any horse out there!" she said quickly, turning away from him.

Most of us know how deadly and devastating the civil war is. Now try to imagine it even worse. With a third enemy that doesn't care which side of the war you are on. If you are human, then you're fair game. There is a pestilence that is ravaging the land, both North and South, and that pestilence is an army of savage vampires that seem intent on wiping out the human race all together. Only a select few realize the truth behind the strange deaths. Most choose to believe that it is some strange new disease that is highly contagious.
Megan Fox is different. She knows the truth. In fact, half of her is the truth. She is half vampire and has managed to retain control of her hunger and kept her soul. She is on the hunt to eliminate the vampires that have turned to pure evil. Along the way she finds her half-brother, another like her, that also hunts the vampires with a group of his friends, and has been for years.
One of these friends is Cole Granger, a Texas sheriff that has not taken any sides in the Civil War. Apparently Texas has too much to deal with - outlaws, Indians, and vampires. Word of a large outbreak of this "disease" in a military prison brings them East and into the very heart of the Civil War. Cole finds it difficult to trust Megan at first. After all, he's only met one other half-vampire before and tends to hold to the kill it before it can kill you mentality.
As the death count rises and more and more vampires are brought back, Megan struggles with her rising feelings for Cole and strives to earn his trust. But can they learn to trust each other and work together in time? The scales are tipping, and it's not in favor of the humans.
This story had quite a nice twist on traditional vampire historical fiction novels. Since the war is taking place, it's very easy for unexplained deaths to be blamed on wounds received in the field. And with so many being buried away from home, who is there to notice that the dead aren't staying put. The characters of Megan and Cole were very well written. Neither one really trusted the other, with good reason, for quite awhile. Their relationship grew in a very realistic way, even if it did progress rather quickly. The downfall of Megan's character is that she is obsessed with the search for her father, a full vampire, and her search puts many in danger time and time again. It just seemed like she never learned and grew.

Follow up to Night Of The Wolves
where we first met the characters of Cole Granger and Cody Fox in the town of Victory Texas... In this second book we are once again draw into the Civil War era setting and the middle of a more sinister war against the creatures of the night we all call "Vampires"!
Not only is this book chock full of interesting historical tidbits that take place during the Civil War such as numerous battle references and names of historical figures but some interesting and very unique characters such as Megan Fox.... Megan is a damphir, daughter of a human Mother and a Vampire father and she is working hard on behalf of all humanity to stop the Vampire's "disease" from spreading... Teaming up with her half brother Cody, his cohorts Cole Granger and Brendan Vincent they set out to wage war on the vicious hungry newly turned Vampires which are turning up everywhere leaving corpses behind....
This is a different take on a very well known subject, the mixtures of history and romance along with the battles depicted with the vampires will keep the reader entertained until turning the last page... Readers will be especially rooting for Megan and Cole to have a HEA, but to find out if they get it you have to read the book...
The part of the story that reveals the identity of the "Master Vampire" who is causing all the suffering and havoc comes near the end, this particular twist was foreshadowed in places but still will catch you by surprise when it happens... There are side stories concerning Cody and Megan's Vampire father along with the budding romance between one of the secondary characters and Brendan Vincent that hopefully will be explored at some point in the future if there will be more books written in this setting...

Two of my favorite genres combined into one book! Historical fiction and the paranormal meet in this great read! Megan Fox, a half-breed vampire, is tasked with going to Washington D.C. by General Robert E. Lee to try to stop the spread of the "disease" as they call it. There she unites with her brother, Cody, who is also a half-breed and meets Cole Granger, a Texan sheriff. Cody and Cole have teamed up with others who are also fighting the outbreak of vampirism. President Abraham Lincoln sends Cole and Megan to Harpers Ferry where he has seen a vision of a little drummer boy that must be put down and the final battle will ensue. Along the way they figure that someone close to the camp must be a traitor because the vampires seem to be attacking out of revenge not out of hunger.
Megan and Cole's attraction to each other is obvious. But the problem is trust. Cole isn't sure if he can trust her because she is part vampire and Megan isn't sure she can trust herself with Cole. It was easy to fall in love with these two characters and cheer for them. This book was just a great fantastic read!

My rating for this was up in the air, between a 2 or a 3, so I went with 3. And there are several reasons for this.
*I felt like I was reading a History text book for majority of the book. I love Historical Romance novels, but this was insane.
*Two of the main characters in the beginning were similarly named and it was very confusing. A Huge turn off if I have to stop and think of who is who because the author can't think of a name that is different. I know Cole and Cody are not that similar but its close enough and way too confusing.
Now, I did love all the characters. Cole: very cocky and arrogant. Megan: very defensive, which very understandable. Lissette: a total Bitch all the way to the end.
I love historical facts in my books, but I felt this book went overboard- made it feel like you were reading a textbook throughout the majority of the book. But once Megan and Cole left DC to go to Harpers Ferry on a mission, the book took a better turn. Once the couple arrived in Harpers Ferry, I was hooked. Cole and Megan made a great team. And I just happen to be from Harpers Ferry, it made reading this so cool because I could actually see where things were taking place!
But once in Harpers Ferry, I do not recommend reading during storms, or power outages, especially if you live near Harpers Ferry like I do. LOL
Once Cole and Megan were in Harpers Ferry, all kinds of action was happening. But don't expect lots of sex or explicit parts in the story. There is just brief mentions of sex. Personally, I would have taken out so much of the Textbook material and added a little bit more steamy scenes.

It's not often I pick up a book and then almost immediately set it down again, especially when it's a book about vampires. This book, however, is going straight into the yard sale pile. By the bottom of page 1, I thought this might be a lost cause for no other reason than the name of the female being prominently mentioned--Kim. Given that this is taking place in what seems to be the Civil War-era South, the name is COMPLETELY out of place (yes, I actually checked the Social Security Administration's baby name list. It cracked the top 1000 as a MALE name in 1936, 8 years before it entered the top 1000 as a FEMALE name. Kimberly as a female name is similarly placed.) So THAT struck me as unbelievably anachronistic. The main male, Cole, is not QUITE as "out of time" as Kim, but there's still anachronism going on there. (It's worth noting that the name Cole was in the top 100 male baby names the year this was published.) A secondary male character is named Cody Fox. Yes. I checked. Yes, it's possible but pretty danged unlikely. Then another female comes in (who is apparently Cody's "long-lost sister" that he didn't even know he had. How can she be "long-lost" if he is utterly unaware of her existence?) Her name is Megan. Megan Fox. MEGAN. FOX. After that, I was out. This book was published in 2010. Megan Fox (the actress) was catapulted to stardom in the movie Transformers in 2007. Why not just name your female lead Scarlett Johansson? Name the male lead Chris Hemsworth? I was already iffy after "Kimberly" in the Civil War South, but once I hit Megan Fox, I was out. Is the rest of the book good? Don't know, don't care. Maybe Megan Fox knows.
