Deanne jumps into relationships heart-first.

Eager to start fresh after her nasty divorce, Deanne Moore adopts a stray dog and begins the healing process. She has learned--the hard way--to take chances and just enjoy life. The one thing she "isn't" expecting, though, is to get a second chance with her first crush.

Julius won't let lust burn away the last of his brain cells.

After losing his entire family in one blinding instant, Julius Zern has learned to steer clear of happily-ever-after scenarios. Meeting Deanne stirs something tender within him. So he stays. Overnight. And falls...hard.

But just as he begins to follow his instincts--and his desire for Deanne--trouble arrives and threatens to destroy their fragile bond.

I live on Vancouver Island in the moody, green, and rain-washed Pacific Northwest. So when I'm seriously story challenged (too often!) I often walk the beach and commune with the stunning and multi-talented Mother Nature. (Make that beg for inspiration!) If that doesn’t work, a few minutes thinking about the quirks and foibles of human nature usually does the trick.

I dislike cooking.
I dislike nosy people.
I dislike too many rainy days in a row.
I dislike snakes.

And the only word I hate is hate.

I love reading, writing, my sons, my sister, my twin granddaughters, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Boon--and most of all my first and last husband, Tim.

You can follow me on Twitter, if that's something you tend to do. @EC_Sheedy I also mess around on Tumblr. That's here: http://ecsheedy.tumblr.com/

I loved this creepy romantic suspense by EC Sheedy. The pressure brought to bear on the dupe by the villain was especially chilling. And the romance was well-handled with plenty of angst and a shared tragic past. A wonderful read!

Not many people get a second chance with their first love but that’s what Deanne gets when meets up with Julius again. She is working with Clancy to promote his first art how. She contacts Julius Zern for a private showing; if he likes them it will boost Clancy’s credibility as an artist.

Julius got more than he bargained for when showed up at Deanne’s house. He can’t stop thinking about her so he decides to ask her to dinner. He doesn’t believe in long term and he never stays overnight when he dates. Deanne changes all the rules and he doesn’t know what to do her.

Deanne is a strong character, she has survived a loveless marriage and a demanding mother to finally be her own person. It took many years of therapy but now she has a new life, a new dog, and a new beginning. She is willing to give this new relationship with Julius a chance but will he.

Both Deanne and Julius feel a responsible for what happened to his family all those years ago. It took Julius many years to get over their deaths and he vowed to never fall in love again. He is a giving person, donates to several charities, took over his father’s business and inherited his mother’s love of art.

The story caught grabbed my attention right from the start. There is an air of mystery and intrigue because you know that there is going to be trouble with Kurt and his friends. As the story progresses and Julius spends the night with Deanne, you start to hope he will be her knight in shining armor. I loved the ending and was surprised by the turn of events.

Overall I enjoyed Overnight and give it 3½ Flaming Hearts.

Deanne Moore is trying to put her life back together after a divorce. She's embarked on a new career and adopted a dog. She's also working on her self-esteem and finding herself. She's been under the thumb of her mother her whole life. After breaking away from her mom and the man who was using her to get to her mom, she's determined to make sense of her life.

Julius Zern is just looking to buy some artwork, not get involved with the agent who is selling the paintings. He's surprisingly drawn to her, however, and asks her out against his better judgment. They have some crazy chemistry between the sheets, but it's his feelings for her outside the bedroom that scare him. Since losing his entire family at age 17, he's determined to never open himself up to love again.

This book didn't work very well for me. I don't think the timeline lent itself to a believable HEA. Although the characters "knew" each other as children, their friendship wasn't close enough to make it believable that they'd fall in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together after one day together in the present. Deanne came across as needy and insecure, and Julius came across as a total jerk. The side story featuring the teens just made me sad and angry. This wasn't a feel good kind of book.

My heart broke for both Deanne and Julius (and really, his name threw me - who names a kid Julius these days?). They both had a hard time growing up, and their shared history made their connection that much stronger. I really liked how Deanne was honest with Julius about her connection to his family before they had sex, and that he didn't hold her responsible.

I liked that Deanne made him look at himself and acknowledge his fear of getting close again. Which made her transformation to her "new self" that much stronger.

What I didn't care for so much was the side story with Kurt. Whether it's because I have high school boys myself or just that I didn't care for their total villainous characters with no redeeming qualities (although some of them did second guess what they were doing) I'm not sure. Maybe I just don't want to acknowledge that boys can be that cruel at that age even though I know it to be the truth, and a rather likely truth at that. I think what blew the scenario for me was their willingness to use guns. That seemed the piece that blew it over the top for me.

Overall, I enjoyed the story very much, and thought the dialogue between Julius and Deanne was what pulled the story together for me.
