The God That Comes Near is a study of the tiny book of Haggai that is tucked in the often forgotten minor prophets. Several months ago we asked which section of the Bible that you wish you knew more about, and so many of you said the Minor Prophets! We are so thrilled to spend some time in the book of Haggai and uncover the rich truth in this small book. In just 38 verses of this short book, we are reminded of truth that is timeless. We are urged to fix our gaze on the Lord, to find our hope in His Word, and to find hope in His name. The book of Haggai is a call to worship, and a reminder of the faithfulness of our God.
Honestly, the best part of this book is that it got me reading the short book of Haggai over and over and noticing new things. The Bible speaks way better than this book, which actually has a handful of typos and is decent, but not spectacular. I'm actually starting to get a little bored of what people say ABOUT the Bible rather than reading the Bible itself.
That said, with the help of this study, I gained a greater appreciation for God's desire to give us His presence and live among His people. I used to get so focused on the building of the temple in Haggai that I thought more of a physical temple than the significance behind it and how that plays out under the gospel. I also used to see God punishing His people in this book for not following Him perfectly, when it seems more accurate to say that He was getting their attention to help them get their priorities straight--that is, following Him should take precedence over their own affairs.
Furthermore, looking at the timeline of all of Scripture, this study gives a beautiful, big-picture view of the temple and God's true design for dwelling with His people that somehow I had missed--less focused on a physical temple being rebuilt than Him living among His people, as we see later in the book of Revelation. I love that.
I enjoyed this study more than any of the others I’ve done by DGC - and they are all good. But, having read Haggai NUMEROUS times I had still missed the point. The shorter, minor prophet books, are easy to fly through without gaining a ton of knowledge. This study forced me to slow down, pick the one page book apart, and really examine the context and message God was trying to convey. Excellent study - as a matter of fact the one page book of the Bible did not provide me enough room for all of my notes and I had to add a page full of notes into the spine! And as always, I love how DGC ALWAYS is able to help us see the relevance to the Gospel and God’s sovereign promises to us. This study is sitting with me and encouraging me to “consider my ways” to allow God to come near to me also.
Lots of typos, not great theology in some portions. But found the questions and thoroughness of reading and re-reading the scripture very helpful! I enjoyed God's word and this study helped me be disciplined in that but I wasnt a huge fan of the study or commentary itself.
