There are no words for this book and I'm not sure if I should give it 5 stars or 1.
It's definitely creepy. I read some of the reviews for it on amazon and one person pretty much summed it up in one word that just basically says it all:
Ghoulish.
I'm not sure what the appeal is of this book to the type of people who are probably generally into it. I'm pretty sure there are tons of people who like this book for reasons other than the fact that they find it creepy and they are kind of grotesquely drawn to weird creepy stuff. I'm sure there are people who find Anne Geddes' work delightful in a completely un-ironic un-creepy way. But I really don't understand who those people are and what they're all about and maybe that is part of the draw. But the main draw is that these pictures are...
Ghoulish.
Celine Dion, though I do actually love her and think she's beautiful, is a really awkward model who is completely unphotogenic. She does not look earthy or ethereal or any of the things you would expect the woman in these pictures too look like, she kind of just looks like some mom trying to pose for awkward photos with her baby (even though they are NOT her babies) at a Sears portrait studio. Which I also kind of appreciate.
My sister in law got me this book at a thrift store, and it might be the strangest yet best gift I’ve ever received. As a mega Celine fan, all I can say is, this book is so effing weird. Beautiful photographs of babies dressed as flowers while Celine holds them as she wears beautiful gowns. It makes no sense and yet it is now a prized possession.
I said to my sister in law that if in the future aliens come to earth, destroy all humans, and then go through our stuff to learn about what humans were like, I sure hope they find this weird ass book.
There are many beautiful pictures in this book. But you also need to be aware of immodesty in this book. I don't know how you deal with immodesty in art books in your home. In our home we either tear the pictures out of color over them to make them modest (depending on how much we like the picture).
My friend Marina is really crazy about Anne Geddes for some reason, but personally I find it kind of creepy how she dresses babies up to look like plants and then takes their picture when they're passed out.
You were right Jaime. This was frightening. I was particularly disturbed by the babies wrapped like spring rolls with roses on their heads! And the alien-looking swim caps some of the sweet babes were sporting. And yes, the baby eggplant is priceless. Nom-nom Celine.
