Les personnages de ce récit ont juste assez de réalité pour plaire au lecteur. Et c'est bien cela qu'ils veulent, plaire, comme des jeunes gens qui se jettent à l'eau sur les plages. Ils se sont jetés à la mer et nagent vigoureusement, entre le ciel et l'eau, entre le réel et l'irréel, vers un continent où règne la raison du coeur. Ils ont chaud, ils ont froid, ils pleurent et rient comme tout le monde. Ils parlent le langage de la nature où rien n'est fixe. Ce ne sont pas des rêveurs de l'esprit, ce sont des rêveurs de la chair, c'est-à-dire que chez eux l'esprit est à l'extérieur au lieu d'être à l'intérieur. Ils prévoient une mythologie future. On trouvera dans ce livre, plus qu'une série d'aventures, un déploiement féérique de la vie quotidienne, sans contrôle et sans parti-pris. L'enfant amoureux de cartes et d'estampes et le philosophe sadique pourront le lire avec un égal intérêt. Un séduisant visage de femme qui ne disparaît que pour réapparaître sans cesse ne manquera pas d'émouvoir les amoureux dans leur chambre sous les toits et un amant comme on n'en fait plus touchera le coeur des femmes attentives. Quant au titre, il suffit de dire pour l'expliquer, que l'eau et le feu se disputent continuellement l'existence de nos héros.

This is a novel, loosely based on the figure of Arthur Rimbaud, by
Jacques Baron, whose first poems were published in the Dadaist review L'Aventure and who at 17 was considered one of the great young hopes of Surrealism.

The characters in this story have just enough reality to please the reader. And that is what they want, to please, like young people who throw themselves into the water on the beaches. They have thrown themselves into the sea and are swimming vigorously, between the sky and the water, between the real and the unreal, towards a continent where the reason of the heart reigns. They are hot, they are cold, they cry and laugh like everyone else. They speak the language of nature where nothing is fixed. They are not dreamers of the mind, they are dreamers of the flesh, that is to say that for them the mind is outside instead of being inside. They foresee a future mythology. In this book, one will find more than a series of adventures, a magical unfolding of daily life, without control and without bias. The child in love with maps and prints and the sadistic philosopher will be able to read it with equal interest. A seductive woman's face that disappears only to reappear again and again will not fail to move lovers in their attic room and a lover like they don't make anymore will touch the hearts of attentive women. As for the title, it suffices to say to explain it, that water and fire continually fight over the existence of our heroes.
