Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde have never seen anything like it. The dead woman is dressed up like a Victorian doll. She’s wearing a long, white dress, a bloodstained blonde wig, and a mask with red, cupid-bow lips.

Beneath the mask, her face is beaten so badly it’s unrecognisable.

DNA identifies the victim as Lori Lansing, who was kidnapped three weeks ago. Her wealthy husband paid half a million pounds to secure her release — but he never saw his wife again.

Then another young woman is reported missing.

Could Harry and Jess be hunting a serial killer?

Meanwhile Harry’s past might finally be catching up with him. And Jess’s new man seems just too good to be true.

THE WRONG WOMAN is the third book in a new crime fiction series, (DI Harry Lennox/DS Jess Wilde #1 by best-selling author Helen H. Durrant. Having enjoyed the previous books in the series, I was looking forward to continuing with this new series.

THE DETECTIVES LENNOX & WILDE SERIES
Book1: The Guilty Man (2020)
Book2: The Faceless Man (2021)
Book3: The Wrong Woman (2023)

THE DETECTIVES

DI HARRY LENNOX began his career in Glasgow, but due to a traumatic incident, transferred to West Yorkshire and then Ryebridge. He blames a Scottish villain for what happened and is afraid that he’ll catch up with him. Harry is single, thirtysomething and has a chaotic lifestyle.

DS JESS WILDE is in her early thirties. She is unattached and keen to progress in her career. She gets on well with Harry. He doesn’t have much time for protocol, and this suits her. She is critical of how he lives. She has recently bought her first property locally.

DC COLIN VANCE is the newest member to the team.

The novel is set in Ryebridge, in the North of England, a perfect breeding ground for criminals.

Adam Lansing’s wife, Lori had been kidnapped three weeks ago, and her wealthy husband had put together a hefty ransom for her release. Adam started receiving letters each day with the final letter with instructions for where to leave the money and when. At the last moment, Adam became scared and contacted the police for help.

The kidnapper had promised that once the money was handed over, the torment would be finished…but Adam never got his wife back.

Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde were called to the scene of a dead woman, dressed up like a Victorian doll. She was wearing a long, white dress, a bloodstained blonde wig, and a mask. Beneath the mask, her face was beaten so badly it was unrecognizable.

Through DNA the victim was identified as Lori Lansing, who was kidnapped three weeks ago.

Then another young woman is reported missing.

Was there a serial killer on the loose?

This was a good suspense read, and a great continuation to a promising series.

Many thanks to the author, Joffe Books and Netgalley for my digital copy.

"The Wrong Woman" is a classic, well-written, twisty, and compelling police procedural thriller.

The book is the third book in author Helen Durrant's "Detectives Lennox & Wilde" series.

I was immediately intrigued by the book's premise:

A husband receives a ransom note for his missing wife. After the husband pays the ransom, a body with his wife's tattoo was found with a badly mutilated face.

Is the dead woman his wife? Who did this and why?

Although the book was intriguing, I felt that the book suffered from TMC (too many characters).

I prefer books with fewer characters that are well-developed than the latter.

This was my first exposure to the series and even though the book was a standalone read, I would have enjoyed the book more had I listened to the two previous titles in this series.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by John Voce, who did a superb job with the narration.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Lennox & Wilde Book 3.

Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde have never seen anything like it. The dead woman is dressed up like a Victorian doll. She's wearing a long, white dress, a blood-stained blonde wig, and a mask with red, cupid bow lips, Beneath the mask, her face is beaten so badly it's unrecognisable.

The story is set in Ryebridge, North England. This time Detectives Lennox and Wilde have a new murder case to solve. This is another well written book that's filled with twists. This is a quick and easy book to read. The characters are well rounded and believable. I was guessing all the way through. I really like Lennox and Wilde, although they are exact opposites, they work well together. I like how the story ended. I hope there are more books to come in this series.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #HelenHDurrant for my ARC of #TheWrongWoman in exchange for an honest review.

The Wrong Woman by Helen H. Durrant is the third in the Detectives Lennox & Wilde series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Joffe Books, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
DI Harry Lennox and DS Jess Wilde are detectives in Ryebridge in Northern England.  They have been working together for the last couple of years.  Harry's past is slowly coming to light, as we have learned that both his twin brother Paul and his father were killed in a suspicious fire in Scotland, while Harry was trying to take down a crime lord, who still wants Harry dead.  He had to escape the country, but is leery of setting down new roots, and longs for Scotland.  Jess just bought a house of her own.  The third member of their team is DC Colin Vance, and their boss is Superintendent Roderick Croft.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Harry and Jess are looking into the death of a woman who was found dressed up in an old Victorian dress and wig.  Her face is so beaten up that she is not identifiable.  DNA finally shows that she is Lori Lansing, who had been kidnapped 3 weeks ago.  Although her husband Adam paid the ransom, Lori was never returned.

Then another young woman, and a friend of Lori's,  is discovered missing.

At the center of this seems to be a new restaurant called Rainbows, and the owner is a well-known drug lord.  Blackwood seems to be branching out into real estate.  He also seems to have something to do with the private hospital where Jess's boyfriend now works.  Something is fishy.

Nothing is as it seems.

Meanwhile, Harry is still having issues settling down, and his past is about to rear it's ugly head again.

My Opinions:
I'm glad I have stuck with this series, because this was the best of them yet.  The writing was always good, but I had issues connecting with the characters.  That really changed in this book.

The ending, although somewhat predictable, makes me wonder how the series will progress, or if it will.

I found the mystery surrounding the dead body to be quite interesting, and I loved all the red herrings that were thrown in.

So, overall, I am happy to say that the characters have finally grown on me, and as always these books are a nice, fast, and entertaining read.

I found this to be ok, nothing memorable about it, though. Lennox & Wilde are back in the 3rd installment of this detective series. A young woman goes missing & a few weeks later, a body is discovered. She’s so unrecognizable that we don’t know who it is. This story will take you from that to a Villain that controls the town, to possibly illegal medical procedures. There’s a lot going on, but easy to follow & fast paced.

The latest novel from a much-loved author!

Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde are a bit shocked by their latest case; Victorian dress, wig and face mask conceals a young woman who has sustained severe injuries resulting in her death. Who is she - and why was she so brutally beaten? As they identify her as the wife of a wealthy businessman - kidnapped three weeks ago and a hefty ransom paid for her release - another woman goes missing. What is going on? Can they get to the bottom of it before another life is lost?

I have so much respect for Helen Durrant; not only does she juggle several different series, she never get them mixed up! It always takes me a few pages to get to grips with any series I'm following and her books are always the best. With gripping crimes, all different, all demanding the reader's attention there is the added details of the investigators - just enough to make them real and enhance the storyline without taking anything away from the current case. I was riveted all the way through with this and, it's fair to say, a bit shocked at the ending! A fantastic read, as always, and as such fully deserving of all five glowing stars!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of The Wrong Woman, the third novel to feature DI Harry Lennox and DS Jess Wilde of Greater Manchester Police, set in the fictional town of Ryebridge.

A young woman is found dead, dressed in a Victorian costume with a China doll mask. With her face badly beaten she is identified as Lori Lansing, who was kidnapped three weeks earlier and never returned despite her husband paying the ransom. Then another young woman is reported missing.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Wrong Woman, which has an amazing story to tell, full of twists and turns. It is told mostly from Jess and Harry’s points of view, so the reader gets a close look at the investigation, without knowing what is going on on the other side.

The author is at the top of her game with this novel. It has a lot of forward momentum, jaw dropping twists and written in such a way that the reader wants more. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. It starts with the macabre scene of a murdered woman dressed as a china doll, which immediately poses so many questions in the reader’s mind and plunges them straight in. And that is only the beginning of a twisted tale that goes places the reader could not envisage from a murder and a kidnap. It might not be overly realistic, but, boy, is it entertaining. It comes together very cleverly at the end, which seems fitting considering the wild journey to get there.

The Wrong Woman is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Ms. Helen Durrant must have a very fertile mind. She has created several series of novel characters for her stories. I don’t know how she keeps all these people in her head; it must be very crowded. (Just teasing.)

The thing for the reader to know is that she has created original characters for all of her series. This book is no exception. Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde are original and refreshing. I really like their relationship, teasing and friendly.

This is an exciting entry into the series. There is much action, drama and tension. The addition of an old enemy of Harry’s from Scotland adds to the mix. There are many, many surprises in this story. One has to withhold certainty about the wide range of suspects. I like that this reader saw glimpses of Jess and Harry’s private lives. It helps to fill out the characters more if one gets to know them better.

Very well done. Ms. Durrant.

I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this very good book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.

A body is found where the face has almost been obliterated. Someone doesn't want anyone to know who she was as the fingers have also been removed. The strange thing is a tattoo is still clearly obvious so why leave it? Lennox and Wilde have their work cut out to try and find out what is going on. Although number three in a series this does stand alone quite happily (I had only read the first one 3 years ago). Another woman goes missing and an infamous crook is in the mix but there appears to be more to this case than just dodgy money lending and drugs. Why has the woman been killed and who is the perpetrator?
I really enjoy Helen’s books. They are an easy read and there’s always a cracking plot line to keep the pages turning with well rounded characters and even a little humour thrown in. There are twists and turns along the way which keeps the pace and the reader ever perplexed as to whom the perpetrator may be. A wonderful book that I enjoyed reading.

An audiobook which is the third book in the series which I have enjoyed. Unless the author completely changes direction with the key characters then this book neatly draws a line under the mystery around Harry Lennox. The plot of this book was clever, relatively complex although the title gave a clue that all was not as it seemed. The final 3 chapters raced along and in some ways the mystery surrounding Harry sort of fizzled. I am not sure these characters can sustain more books but the author has other series so may decide to leave this as a trilogy.

This book is certainly an unputdownable Thriller.
Jessie Wilde and Harry Lennox are back with book three.
Adam Lansing will go all out to get his wife Lori back from the Kidnappers even paying more money, Three weeks on a poor woman is found in the Ryebridge Park by a group of kids, with a heart shape tattoo on her right upper arm they have a name 'Lori' but do they have the wrong woman.
Almighty twisty chapters that are read in this amazing book, I love this series and the characters, superb from the very beginning here's hoping we have more to come from these two characters they do really work so well together.

Not an unbiased review because I love this author's work (but this is the first I've read in this series). The publisher's blurb is a good intro, but it's the writer's craft that is so riveting. The characters are so real, the mystery could be in any urban area with competent policing (love this pair), and some of the twists are beyond diabolical. Excellent read!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

THE WRONG WOMAN opens in the midst of a terrifying situation. Subsequently, there's a gruesome, unusual discovery. Horrific findings complicate the mystery. Catapulting tension and trepidation will have you on the edge of your seat. The baffling conundrum is like a maze within a labyrinth which will keep you guessing. New information has suspense skyrocketing leading to a dynamite conclusion.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

This is book 4 in the series about detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde. And a great instalment it is!

When a kidnap victim turns up dead, Harry and Jess investigate. Was she seeing the local mobster? Why were her kidneys and eyes removed?

Really enjoyed this. The characters are fantastic and very believable.

This is an intruging storyline and great plot with interesting characters. The story has a number of twists, and it keeps you guessing.

"The Wrong Woman" by Helen H. Durrant

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

In the picturesque Pennine foothills of North England, Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde find themselves embroiled in a chilling case that defies all expectations. Helen H. Durrant's latest crime thriller, "The Wrong Woman," is a rollercoaster ride of suspense, deception, and unexpected twists.

The dead woman, dressed like a macabre Victorian doll, lies before them. Her face, beaten beyond recognition, conceals the identity of Lori Lansing—a kidnapping victim whose wealthy husband paid a hefty ransom, only to lose her forever. As another young woman vanishes, Harry and Jess confront the possibility of a serial killer on the loose. But the clues lead them down treacherous paths, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

Durrant masterfully weaves a web of intrigue, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from the very first page. The pacing is relentless, each chapter revealing new layers of darkness. The picturesque setting contrasts sharply with the horrors unfolding, creating an eerie atmosphere that lingers long after the book is closed.

Detective Harry Lennox, haunted by his past, grapples with demons that threaten to resurface. Jess Wilde, ambitious and unafraid to bend the rules, complements him perfectly. Their chemistry crackles, adding depth to the narrative. And lurking in the shadows is Jess's enigmatic new love interest—a character who keeps us guessing.

"The Wrong Woman" is a maze of stunning revelations. Just when you think you've unraveled the truth, Durrant throws another curveball. The plot twists are diabolical, leaving readers breathless. And beneath it all lies a question: Can Harry and Jess stop the killer before more lives are shattered?

Helen H. Durrant's writing is crisp, her storytelling impeccable. If you're a fan of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, or Joy Ellis, this book is a must-read. Prepare for sleepless nights as you race to uncover the chilling secrets hidden within "The Wrong Woman"

Although this is the third book in this series, but the first one I had read, it stood up very well as a standalone and it was a very enjoyable read.

DI Lennox and DS Wilde discover a body bizarrely dressed up like a Victorian doll, a body that has been savagely beaten and had its kidneys and eyes removed. Everything is pointing to this being the body of a woman that was kidnapped three weeks earlier and the husband paid a half million pound ransom for. Lennox and Wilde set off investigating the murder which quickly takes them to a local nightspot that is owned by the local hoodlum.

I have to say I quickly took to the main characters in this series, and I enjoyed the interplay between them. Lennox it turns out is hiding away in England following threats from a particularly nasty criminal overlord in Scotland and is struggling to put down roots, or even have a place to live in because of this.

Overall I felt this was a good crime fiction book and turned out to be quite a complex case that unravelled like the layers of an onion, but also included quite a few red herrings and some good surprises along the way. It is quite a pacy and quick read but if you enjoy crime fiction I think you would enjoy this quick read.

The resolution left the series up in the air and I would like to think the author will find a way to write more in the series as overall I did enjoy this book and spending time with the central characters. The only thing that bothered me in this book was the title as I feel it gave away some of the plot well in advance.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is book 3 in the Harry Lennox series but would work perfectly as stand alone. However, you will relate to the back story better if you have read the first 2 books.

The story begins with the discovery of a body dressed in historical garments including a mask. Identification is difficult owing to the damage inflicted on her but everything points to her being the kidnapped wife of a wealthy businessman. As the team being investigation they realise they have very little to go on and need to wait for the pathology and forensics to help them out. As the results come in all is not as it seems someone is going to extraordinary lengths to send the team down false trails. The favourite suspect turns out to have the best alibi possible and other suspects are few and far between.

As the team manage to make progress Harry begins to fear that his nemesis has tracked him down and if he is right there is trouble afoot for everyone.

The characters continue to develop I especially like Harry, he comes accross as a hard man but we suspect underneath the act is big softie and like a lot of men is reluctant to commit and put down roots despite Jess' efforts to persuade him to buy his own place.

Jess makes a perfect contrast to Harry being caring and organised so they make a good team. The other team members are coming more to the forefront and developing well.

This is an absolutely brilliant read that is perfect for anyone who loves Crime Fiction.

4* ADVANCED READER REVIEW

I enjoyed this book, devouring it over three, otherwise busy, days - for me the mark of a page turner.

There is one big problem with it though - the title is a massive spoiler...the tale starts with the discovery of a woman's body and, because it's called "The Wrong Woman" my suspicions were roused and what should have been a "fekk me" moment
three quarters of the way in became a "yeah, guessed that" damp squibb....needs retitling before mass release if possible..."The Dead Doll" comes.to mind as a subtle alternative.

The cast of characters was interesting - though a big red herring once the main villainess is detained isn't really explained (how she knew a particular name that wasn't on the scene when she was active - I can guess but.would have
thought it could have been explained)...I was also a little confused as to how easily that character was bailed given the things she was clearly involved in...

The main Sergeant/Inspector dynamic would be challenged in the real world I suspect but works in the sense of the story telling

Hopefully at some time I'll read the earlier books and look forward to any that follow, though there are some big decisions to be made by the DI
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Book 3 of the Detectives Lennox and Wilde series. I haven’t read the first two but found it easy enough to pick up the historic threads. Well written and plotted and alongside the crime there is a thread about the detective personal lives - and those which aren’t at all straightforward.

Briefly, a woman is found murdered but this is not your ‘normal’ murder as she is dressed like a doll, her kidneys and eyes have been removed along with her fingers. Her face had been battered in an apparent attempt to hide her identity. Investigations provide an identity and leads the detectives to her husband and the bar where she worked. The husband seems reluctant to talk and the atmosphere at the club is threatening. Lennox and Wilde struggle to make sense of it all and then another woman goes missing

Good twists and turns keep the reader on their toes. A nice easy read thriller and I really enjoyed the developing relationship between the two detectives; I foresee romance! Good police procedural with fabulous characters and a great plot, a very good read.

This is the third in the series and works well as a standalone. Lennox and Wilde get involved with the discovery of a woman's body dressed in a vintage Victorian-era dress. It looks like the body of a missing woman who was the victim of a kidnapping and was never found despite the substantial ransom being paid.

I read this very quickly. It is so easy to read despite the nature of the story. It is full of twists involving drugs, lots of brutality, dodgy landlords and a private medical facility which seems to be involved somehow. I like the characters of Harry and Jess. They are totally opposites yet work well together to balance things out. I could see where the ending was going but it was still a nice satisfactory end.

This is already proving to be a terrific series and I look forward to reading more from this author.

My thanks to Joffe Books for an advance copy of this, and this is my honest review.

This is the third book in the Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde series by author Helen H Durrant.

Detectives Harry Lennox and Jess Wilde are called on to investigate when the body of a dead woman is discovered dressed up like a Victorian doll. She’s wearing a long, white dress, a bloodstained blonde wig, and a mask with red, cupid-bow lips. When the mask is removed her face is beaten so badly it’s unrecognisable.

DNA identifies the victim as Lori Lansing, who was kidnapped three weeks ago. Her wealthy husband paid half a million pounds to secure her release, but he never saw his wife again. It’s not long before another young woman is reported missing and there are fears that a serial killer may be at large.

A good solid police procedural that made an exciting read.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Joffe books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the series featuring DI Harry Lennox and DS Jess Wilde. I had read the first book in the series but not the second. Harry and Jess are called out to investigate the murder of a woman. She has had her kidneys, eyes and fingers removed and her face battered. She was also left dressed in a Victorian dress looking like a doll. They soon realise that it is the body of a woman who was reported having been kidnapped but was never found even though her husband paid the ransom money. Another woman is reported missing and the trail leads to a local villain but all is not what it seems. I found this book contained plenty of drama and suspense and I look forward to book number four .
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
