This is a short fictional tale of a man known to history as George Alexander Spickard. He, however, was not fictional. He lived and died more then 120 years ago. He had and has, many descendants. Though not necessarily an important historical figure on the world stage, he was important in events and lives that swirled in and around a small hamlet in North Central Missouri known as Spickard. He was a farmer, a settler, a soldier, a politician, a miner, a business man, and an entrepreneur. He even sailed the high seas once. But perhaps the most defining event in his life occurred in the spring and summer of 1850. He sold his Missouri farm, and along with his wife and infant son, set off for California to find gold. There are many things we do not know about his life, or his journey to California for that matter. Things we would never know unless we asked him. That is exactly what the author decided to do, ask him. The author takes known things about Mr. Spickard's life and throws in a heaping helping of imagination. The result is, "An Interview with George Alexander Spickard." Who knows, perhaps events happened just the way the author, or in this case, Mr. Spickard describes. On the other hand, perhaps not. The reader gets to decide. A word of caution however, if talking to ghosts creeps you out, this tale may not be for you.
Mike Perry takes us on a journey down of the perceived events of his Great…, Grandfather and founder of Spickard, Missouri. I guess we’ll never know if these words of George Alexander Spickard are true or not. As for I choose to believe. Great read.
