Freedom comes at a cost, and Davyna was willing to pay.
After burning the throne, she felt like her game of hide-and-seek was finally over, and she could move on. But after a strange encounter, she rushes back to Valyner and realizes that this game is far from over. Now, she must face the consequences of her actions that threaten her realm’s very existence.
In a race against time, she must confront her inner demons to save her people, and seek the answers she needs to stop the impending war.
Loss will be her friend. Betrayal will be her follower. And love will be her fight.
But will her light triumph over the darkness inside? Or will she lose herself and accept that she was destined for Hell all along?
I feel like I waited forever for book two, to get the answers I wanted no NEEDED and day went and ripped my heart out.
If you read hidden and thought seeking would give you that HEA think again, dy goes offfff and I mean that in the best possible way! Never have a read an FMC that reacted appropriately to her situation if I was her I’d have been the same. The book pulls on all the emotions and will not only have you crying but laughing and kicking your feet too! It touches a little more on ev’s story too and I liked that i like knowing all the moving parts and what’s going on and why
So while this book left me with even more questions than answers I’m excited for book three and need it already!
Ps. The last chapter still has gme in a choke hold and I’m not sure I’ll ever recover!
I am absolutely in love with The Dark Curse series. Seeking was a major elevation from the intensity of book one, but also in talent with Fay's magic with how she wrote these characters and story. This was one rollercoaster of all the emotions I did not want to come off from. I cannot wait to get book 3 in my hands! 🖤
Grappling with the betrayals, secrets, and unstable magic, Davyna seeks answers to the questions that haunt her. Faced with devastating revelations and enemies from all sides, will she continue to fight or become consumed by the darkness?
Tropes to expect: 🔥Multi-POV 🔥FMC goes dark 🔥Morally grey shadow daddy MMC 🔥Hidden truths 🔥Fated mates 🔥Touch and 💀 🔥Found family
Fay takes us back to the fae lands torn apart by war, mistrust, and loss. Dy must navigate the courts and confront uncomfortable truths about her circumstances, her inner demons, and her future. Dy is so passionate and fierce and I was excited to see her discover different parts of herself. This MMC is probably one of the most steadfast and slightly unhinged shadow daddies out there. Their connection is intense, passionate, but complicated.
The entire found family is so devoted. I especially loved seeing Evren come into her own. Everyone is willing to sacrifice everything for the ones they love. And no one in this world is safe 🥲
Seeking Beyond the Flames is a dark, twisted, and emotional ride. As secrets continue to unravel and the realms teeter on the brink of war, will love be enough to pull them through the darkness?
Huge thanks to Fay Bec for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review
I love when a story keeps you guessing and at the edge of your seat. This is definitely it! What a roller coaster ride. It had me not wanting to put book the book down, and now I just want more.
Seeking Beyond the Flames by Fay Bec was just… wow. I am so impatient when it comes to waiting for the sequel in a series I really enjoyed, but this book was completely worth the wait as it had me completely invested and not wanting to put it down from the start. Despite the time it’s been since I was last in this world, as soon as I started this book it was like I had never left it and I was completely enmeshed in the lives of these characters the author has created, worried for them with the events taking place, wanting the best for them and biting my nails as I watched them endure their personal struggles.
Seeking Beyond the Flames was an emotional ride for me. It had such real mental health rep and reading Davyna’s struggles was touching and resonated for what it was. She spends a lot of this book fighting her own darkness, in a state of mental anguish that helps her darkness rise to the surface and has her pushing away the people who matter the most to her, isolating herself and letting the darkness win. As a result much of Davyna’s point of view is her struggling with this battle and letting her demons win, and it felt so real and honestly had me breaking for her, and made it impossible not to connect with her. I gained such a renewed sense of bonding with Davyna, and frankly the other characters as well because their emotions were just so fraught and real, impossible not to latch onto and feel myself while reading.
Kadeyan continued to shine as a character as well. My heart broke for him countless times and I just fell in love with him all over again over his blinding love for Davyna. For me it’s the fact that he doesn’t love her despite her darkness, but loves her darkness and all. He has his own darkness that resonates with her own and it’s just one more reason their relationship is so pure and beautiful, as they can accept every aspect of one another and not just the good things. The struggles he has to endure throughout this book were one more reason to feel a connection to him and hurt for him with the pain he must endure, one more reason the characters were such a strength for this book and one of my favourite parts.
As for the story, it was action packed. There were a lot more battles/fighting in this book with oodles of strife going on in the lands involved in this world. It meant there were no lulls in the plot as things kept coming one after the other, between the characters and their internal struggles, the fighting occurring between different groups which have become very bloody, and the insidious forces that are behind some of the problems taking place in this sequel. There is a new big bad and much havoc is wreaked as a result. But there is also a lot going on as far as Davyna’s background and new information coming to light. Learning all the new information there was to digest from this book had me even more hooked to the story, and quite frankly wanting to know even more about this world as a whole.
Then there’s the ending. It. Broke. Me. I’m talking I wasn’t expecting to have my emotions wrung out and beaten with a stick so thoroughly, and yet here I am, struggling to move on from what I just read and needing to take more than a minute to process what I just read. I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the third book because I am absolutely beside myself at the moment and desperately in need of more of this story, and more of this world. Honestly, this second book beats the first, Hidden Beneath the Embers, for me. I highly recommend this series!
The fae realm is asunder following the events of Hidden Beneath the Embers. In the processing of burning everything to the ground, Davyna failed to consider her future as a lady of the fae courts would truly mean. Enemies are around every corner, forcing Davyna to reconsider her alliances. At times, she can barely trust herself. Through it all, Kadeyan remains willing to be her confidante and partner in crime. If only Davyna will accept their bond and let him in…
There’s so much more to Seeking Beyond the Flames including passionate, toe curling spice; edge of your seat action; and shocking revelations. Watching the Fallen Court grapple with harsh truths and unexpected circumstances brings everyone closer than ever before. It also offers insight into more POVs, including Evren’s.
The real star of the show is Fay Bec’s thoughtful, real depiction of mental health. Davyna’s dance with the dark side is expertly done, making you feel each and every moment with her. I found myself crying at several points in the story because I felt as broken as she was, or remembered a time when I found myself in the depths without any idea how I would ever return to the light.
It’s for this reason, I loved Seeking even more than its predecessor. Something about it tugged at my heartstrings while once again whisking me away to a fantastical world of magic and creatures galore. There was so much stillness amidst the chaos and so many impactful quotes woven within the expansive worldbuilding. And by the end, you’ll be ready and willing to get hurt again.

Davyna really took front stage here. In this book we really dived into the lore of her past, and who she is as well as her parents. A majority of the book she struggled with balancing her dark and light side, which I really appreciate that she wasn't always the 'good guy.' This book definitely had her as the villain in the book and I mean the villain.
.
Kadeyan's unwavering dedication to her never ended. Even when she was evil, even when she couldn't be stopped, and even when she was completely broken. He. Never. Gave. Up. He matched her darkness with his darkness and it was beautiful. No matter what she was going through, or what he was struggling with, he showed up for her and never let her go. Kadeyan became the hero in this, and it was clear he was never really the villain.
The ending....oh I need the third book NOW to see how this ends.
What an amazing ride this has been, waiting for book two was worth the wait! I absolutely feel for Davyna and her internal struggles throughout this book. The turmoil and fear she held within herself and of herself and the feeling we all have when we are weighed down too heavy. She is bad ass and I will forever LOVE this book!!!
4.5⭐️ So many what the heck moments and loud gasps with this one!
I became attached to the main characters Davyna and Kadeyan from the beginning of the series and we see them go through the good, bad, ugly and of course their lusty moments. Davyna discovers a new and terrifying reality about herself and keeps her in a state of high stress and fear for herself, the people she loves and her realm. She was in her Katherine Pierce era for sure! Lots of self discovery, revisiting the past and finding answers with limited sources. Now Kadeyan... oh my heart... his POV kept chipping away at my heart everything about him in this story was pure love and vulnerability. This is a side of him I did not expect and I was pleasantly surprised. The power of love is a strong theme throughout the story and not just between them but with their friends as well. Their journey really broke my heart, I felt the pain, grief, despair, and love from them both, the author did an amazing job with the emotional experience.
This is the second book of The Dark Curse series, you will need to read book 1 (Hidden Beneath the Embers) first. Definitely a page turning and hard to put down experience, it was intense! We get both MCs POV and we have additional POVs that make appearances and I have never wanted to know an unknown character SO BAD lol The revenge plot was real and I was here for all of it. We get to see more of the other courts and get lots of history regarding the realm and different magical elements. I am a sucker for side characters so getting more of their involvement and meeting new ones was a good time. Evren's character development as a side character I enjoyed so much, she really said "hold my beer" and leveled up, love that for her! I hope we see more of her later on. Prepare yourselves for an emotional rollercoaster ride, I got hit in the feels so many times and tears were shed, I will need to bill someone for this. I want to say so much more but I don't want to spoil anything but this series is one of my favorites so far!
Ahhh Fay Bec has me in a choke hold with this series and I am loving every minute of it. The follow up to Hidden Beneath the Embers takes a turn away from the nuances in book one to really dive into Kadeyan and Davyna's story. With new villains in the mix (but really were there the whole time) we get to see who is willing to stand up for the Valyrean people and who really was following Phersephone in trying to bring forth further darkness and destruction to this realm.
While this book mostly features the POV of the FMC and MMC, we do get some chapters from new perspectives including some unknown characters. This creates and intrigue that makes this book hard to put down. Bec uses her writing skills to give further depth and direction to our favorite characters and new sides and personalities to some of our favorite side characters. We continue to see Davyna fight her instincts of being the protector and trying to stay in the light while her inner darkness is trying to usurp the overall power. With her limiting the information she wants to share but also what she understands, the battle between inner good and evil rages throughout the novel.
This follow up to Hidden was exactly the direction we needed. Bec prioritizes giving the reader a deeper build in the mateship courting that is Kadeyan and Davyna but the polical dynamics of the realm will always factor in their decisions even if we know he will burn the world for her. Prepare to be broken into a million little pieces because Seeking lives up to its name. Bring the tissues and keep them handy. Book 3 cannot come soon enough.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to receive an ARC. This is a voluntary review and I am excited to share my opinion with you.
This book picks up right where we left off with Hidden (btw this is the second book). I was already sucked back into this world with just a couple chapters. The next story that Fay tells kept me captivated. I was intrigued and wanted to keep picking up my kindle to continue. This is a dark romance, fantasy. We start getting more into high fantasy with this book. There are trigger warnings, so make sure to read before diving into the story.
The people are getting sick. The world just isn’t moving like it did before. All thanks to her? What happened after that throne burned? What did it awaken? Davyna is set to fix everything… alone. While also struggling to keep herself together. Will she be able to break through or will she let the darkness consume her? I always love a book with someone struggling with their mental health because it makes it feel so much more real. I felt some of Davyna’s struggles. She just had a hard time letting people in and helping. We got multiple POVs and LOTS of spice. I am not complaining though. We even got some knife play… *smirk*. Evren, her sister, became a new favorite character of mine as she has grown so much. Kadeyan never gives up. He always there for her and strives to consistently show her that. He is also says things like “good girl” which just makes things flutter.
Overall, I recommend you check out this book or series. Fay has put so much work into this next installment and created the next chapter in all her characters’ lives. It’s full of magic, world building, spice, sadness, fire, questionable hot villain, and so much more. Beware, there is a cliffhanger.
In "Seeking Beyond the Flames," Fay Bec weaves a mesmerizing tale of redemption, sacrifice, and the battle between light and darkness that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The story picks up with our protagonist, having ignited a revolution by burning the throne. Initially feeling a sense of closure, she soon realizes that her journey is far from over. What follows is a thrilling adventure as she races against time to confront the consequences of her actions and save her realm from impending destruction.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is the depth of character development. Our protagonist is not just a hero; she's flawed, haunted by inner demons, and faced with difficult choices that challenge her beliefs and values. The author skillfully portrays her internal struggles, making her journey relatable and compelling.
The world-building in "Seeking Beyond the Flames" is rich and immersive. From the vibrant city of Valyner to the dark corners where ancient secrets lie, each setting is vividly described, pulling readers into a realm where magic and mystery abound.
Themes of loss, betrayal, and love are expertly woven into the narrative, adding layers of emotion and complexity to the story. The relationships between characters are nuanced, filled with tension, loyalty, and unexpected twists that keep the plot engaging.
As the stakes escalate, so does the tension, culminating in a gripping climax that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in The Dark Curse series. Fay Bec has created a compelling fantasy world filled with intrigue, danger, and the timeless struggle between good and evil. "Seeking Beyond the Flames" is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy and immersive storytelling.
Everytime I go to write this review, I just start crying again. I am at a loss at how to describe this book with 1)any real human words and not just sobs 2)in a way where I get my point across without sounding like I’m having a psychotic episode 3) without spoiling anything in something so action packed. 😅
But woah and behold; my best effort:
Wow. Truly Fay Bec outdid herself with this one. It’s truly difficult to put into words how this story affected me. It was beautiful, utterly devastating, resonating, packed to the brim, and kept me needing more while simultaneously leaving me terrified to continue.
Every single question that I had at the end of Hidden Beneath the Embers was answered and immediately turned into 100 new ones!! When I tell you, the plot THICKENS… it is truly gets thick. Like needing to turn the page but also needing to look around the room while tears are forming and ask the nobody there, “what the actual hell is going on”, kind of thick. This fast paced whirlwind rollercoaster keeps you on the edge of your seat. The mental health journey and representation will have you reflecting and breaking in ways you didn’t know you could with a character. The “if you’re a bird, I’m a bird”, “if it’ll bring you joy to stab me, I’ll give you the knife”, truly ride or die type of relationship between Kadeyan and Davyna will have you SCREAMING, CRYING, THROWING UP, all of it.
We got multiple POVs, evolving character arcs, much bigger badder 🅱️itches than Persephone, endless twist and turns, internal wars, brutally fought battles, just everything. Literally every mark checked.
AND THE ENDING 😭😭😭 Have your therapist on speed dial and be ready to have book 3 on preorder. 🤧
Seeking Beyond The Flames is the second book in The Dark Curse series and it delivers as a sequel. It picks up right where we left off in Hidden Beneath The Embers, which I love when you don’t have to wonder how has it been or what has happened in that time.
Buckle up, you are in for a ride.
Join Davyna on her journey trying to fix Valyner after the consequences of burning the throne show up.
Also be ready to welcome some new villains that are about to make things just “a bit” messy for our FMC and MMC.
“𝙒𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚… 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧”
Fay has written this story so beautifully and made it feel so real. She didn’t downplay the struggles of the characters (each one of them had their own that they were dealing with while trying to save their world) and truly showed you that it is okay to reach your breaking point.
She also doesn’t downplay the consequences of war, which I loved. It shouldn’t be an easy or quick resolution and Fay really showed that in this book.
“𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚. 𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮. 𝙏𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨.”
You will feel every single emotions in this book. Love. Loss. Betrayal. Or… you might just find yourself wanting to shut all emotions off but that’s okay, as long as you find the light in the mist of the darkness.
In the mist of it all, you will always find that your found family will always be there for you, no matter what!
Thank you Fay for the honor of receiving an ARC of SBTF. It truly is an amazing book and I’ll just sit here “patiently” waiting for the next one.
The struggles with darkness that Davyna goes thru throughout this book really hits home. I didn't think I could love Kadeyan more than I did in Hidden, but here I am. Be still my heart. You can tell the love he has for Davyna, not just for her goodness but her darkness as well. The struggles she goes thru shows mental health reps that people can easily relate to. The feeling of great loss and how much it can overwhelm and drown you emotionally. We see Dy struggle to distance herself from the ones she loves to protect them, and Kade doing everything he can to help her get thru it and bring his little ember back.
This book is primarily FMC and MMC point of view, with a few pov of Unknown characters. You get to meet the true monsters in this story and while the ending left me completely heartbroken, I can't wait to see where this story goes.
Fay is wonderful at building a world and the story around it. I love when books can make me fall in love with the characters and then completely rip my heart out.
*Be prepared to have tissues near by, you're gonna need them.
*Also some really spicy chapters at the end, don't skip if you like the spice.
Loss will be her friend. Betrayal will be her follower. And love will be her fight.
Well I fucked up and didn’t do a reread of Hidden Beneath the Embers, because I was a little confused about what was happening but that my bad! After a couple of chapters everything slowly started to come back. Any who, This was an amazing story about finding yourself, loving yourself through the darkness and you don’t have to be alone, someone is always there for you. Don’t like any of the characters unless you are okay with heartbreak, because my heart shattered too many times.
The story takes place after the first book but what we learn in the opening chapters that time has affected everyone differently. An evil has plagued the land of the fae, causing abnormal behaviors and diseases, but where did this evil come from? During Davyna’s journey we discover secrets about her, her mother and father and the truth about Vaylner and who watches over the fae.
My favorite scene is when Dayna has finally taken to her role as Queen and is addressing her people after everything she has gone through/done and hoping they can (that she can) accept her past and hopefully move forward. The tears that followed my goodness. I could relate to Davyna in that moment, trying to be okay with who you are despite your past.
Please go read this series. It's unbelievable. If you like A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, and humans turning off their emotions (While reading reminded me of The Vampire Diaries), paranormal, fates and gods. Oh and did I mention the spiciness in this book 🥵
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved book 1 and was very excited for book 2 but really should have done a reread first. This book is good but it gets way more complicated and high-fantasy. The magic and spice were still A+ but I just want able to follow it as easily. I plan to reread and revisit later! The author also added a summary of book 1 and reminded me of the glossaries in the back.
This book OMG!!! Such an insane mix of emotions 😂🔥😭💔🥵😱💔🥵🥵💔💔☠ I was so invested right from the start💯 I have literally been Traumatized, Angry, Happy, Heartbroken, Excited, Anxious, Scared, Vengeful and just every other feeling there is Multiple times. I loved getting both Dy & Kade's POVs..it really allows you to immerse yourself so freakin deeply into what they both went through. Davyna's struggle with her darkness & Kadeyan fighting for her just really breaks your heart for both of them. The cliffhanger though... I'm not gonna get spoilery but fawwwk😫 Idk how I'm going to manage the torture waiting for book 3.
-Suggest keeping tissues handy for this journey... You're gonna need them *also make sure to have a soft place to throw your book or kindle
Fay had me sucked in from book one and let me tell you, book two does not disappoint. She takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. In the best way possible. Dy really goes through so much in this book, and I felt it all! I can’t wait to see her story continue. And being able to see a whole other side of Kade, just makes you fall harder for him! Gotta love a well written shadow daddy! This book has you immersed into this world from the start and that ending will keep you waiting at the edge of your seat for more! If you want a spicy read with a great plot this is the book for you
This sequel starts off with even more questions, however we get answers along the way! This story focuses on Davyna discovering herself and struggling with the balance of dark and light.
Ends on a cliffhanger that I wasn’t fully expecting- I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
Fay poured her heart into Seeking, and it shows. She found her voice and used it to propel the story forward, full of twists I didn't see coming.
Given that this is the second book, there's not much I can say that won't spoil it for you. This book will wreck you, but you'll just ask for more. I can't wait to see where this story will take us next.
Fay Bec has done a fantastic job with her debut series! When I tell you book one had me in a chokehold and I was begging her for book 2! I had to immediately start book 2 when I received the arc! I loved the mental health representation in this one! The pacing for the plot was done really well! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this early copy!
The author Fay delivers again!!! This book is literally nonstop! 600 pages of addicting storyline. It was hard to put down, definitely a must read. The Perfect spinoff to the first book!
After reading the absolute cliffhanger at the end of HBTE, I was dying to dive into SBTF!
In this book, we get several different POVs. Having other pov’s aside from Davyna just added the absolute perfect touch to the story line. Especially when we get to read the villian’s pov. I found that all these pov’s worked in the authors favor to add more depth to the characters. The fact that we were able to read Kadeyan’s pov was amazing. Even though I wanted to reach through my Kindle and hug him so bad for what he goes through. It’s hard seeing someone who seemed almost invincible, be broken down.
My feelings were all over the place (in a very good way). I felt extreme sadness, happiness, anxious, angry and utterly perplexed. There were days were I really couldn’t put the book down because I just needed to know what would happen next! There were definitely some jaw dropping moments. Those plot twists were just too good! I did not see them coming!
Overall, I really loved SBTF. If you thought HBTE ended in a cliffhanger, just wait until you finish SBTF. You’ll be screaming for book 3 as I was once I finished!
What have I just read?! Seriously! I'm taking to bed like a mourning Victorian woman! (please imagine that scene near the end of Hocus Pocus) Goodbye, cruel world!
Seriously though, this book was a rollercoaster and a half! I couldn't put it down but I also wanted to throw it across the room. I didn't; breaking my Kindle would have been bad, but I wanted to so badly at a few points! The story carries on from the first book, obviously, and adds a whole dozen or so new levels of drama!
So much happened and I honestly don't know what's a spoiler and what's not. So instead, I'll say I spent a LOT of time screaming into my Kindle screen, scaring my dog, and giving him cuddles more so for myself than him, though he did get treats for my emotional distress. So much deception and so much love.
Seeking beyond the flames is a story you can’t put down!! This is by far my favorite Fantasy read this year. The way Dy & Kade grow as a couple, seeing a more sensitive side to Kade is so captivating, but the spice, spice & more spice is the best part! Finding out more about Dy’s family is worth the wait! Just be prepared to hate a couple people lol Read “Hidden Beneath the Ember”, the first book by Fay Bec in this series. This is your sign to start this series and fall in love just like I did!
I’m so speechless on this book. This is my absolute favourite fantasy series I have read to date. Fay is such a phenomenal writer, I can never put her books down & this was no different. If I could rate this book more than 5 stars I would. The ending of this book f’d me right up & I cannot wait for book #3 to be released!
