A Great Tale of Adventure and Amusement
Let’s just start off with saying Sean Coons’ Firefly: Let There Be Light is loads of fun. The titular firefly Flash is a lively, resourceful protagonist. He’s constantly in hot water, often having to rely on his fellow firefly (and erstwhile love interest) Lucy and the loyal inventive housefly Tommy to lend a helping wing. Flash’s reckless ways will hurtle him and his companions far away from their idyllic home of Temple Hollow in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The adventures Flash takes on his journey from a Texas desert all the way back home are exciting and enjoyable. The villains and rough characters he encounters along the way are unfailingly amusing. They are reminiscent of the highwaymen and rascals that populate the best of fables, tales, and Greek myths. Plus, the ragtag group of new friends who join Flash, Lucy, and Tommy from Texas through New Orleans up the Mississippi and eastward to the Appalachians are likable and add to the festive atmosphere. The character known until the very end as Frog (even though he is toad) is an absolute hoot in his deadpan pessimism.
One of the pleasures of the novel is watching Flash grow up without letting go of his daring, wild soul. He increasingly develops his capacity to draw out the wonderful qualities in others. Indeed, his inspiring speech in New Orleans provides valuable advice for young readers just as his experiences offer excellent life lessons. Ultimately, Flash and his buddies return to Temple Hollow, which has its own set of challenges. Those late scenes offer some nifty twists. They give an appropriately satisfying send-off to this highly entertaining tale.

Firefly: Let There Be Light by Sean Coons presents a middle-grade adventure with a meaningful lesson within. When a mischievous firefly named Flash learns how to illuminate and fly for the first time, he makes reckless decisions and invites trouble into his town. As a result of his latest stunt, he unintentionally unleashes a tyrannical dragonfly attack in Temple Hollow. At the same time, he and his friends find themselves stranded in a dangerous desert in Texas. Amidst the mysterious desert, he inspires a motley crew of misfits to help him get home, but is he prepared for all the challenges that lie ahead?

Sean Coons has written an enticing tale with amusement suitable for children of all ages. He has interwoven real life with his fictional world of insects by setting this story in existing US towns. Various insects make up the exciting cast in Coons’ book, and he has used dialects of different languages to make this book even more enjoyable.

The author engages his fictitious cast in scenarios that illustrate real-life lessons, such as the battle between good and evil, democracy and tyranny, the importance of friendship, and, most importantly, the cost and consequences of actions. Flash’s wild and daredevil-like spirit will enthrall young readers, and when they watch him own up to his reckless decisions and do everything in his power to correct them, they will likely want to do the same. In addition, several riveting plot twists will pique children’s interests and keep them engaged throughout the story and into the exciting finale.

Firefly, written by Sean Coons for his son, is a middle-grade chapter book that kids worldwide can relate to and enjoy. Filled with fatherly advice and love, this coming-of-age story is an incredible adventure with humor and words of wisdom that will delight the whole family.

Enchanting and endearing, winsome and wise - a great holiday gift for middle grade kids!
This book is remarkable because: 1. the author father wrote it to/for his son to celebrate their bond and 2. an inspirational middle grade book that provides knowledge and meaningful lessons about human nature.

It is evident that the author is a musician because the prose is lyric - and lively when necessary to the pandemonium at play. A pivotal musician showdown is exciting and well-written, ending with Beethoven's Ode to Joy!

The book is chock full of colloquial vernacular as well as tidbits of other languages spoken by the protagonist insects and the entire critter characters. Everything seems natural and appropriate amidst the lush settings of the various locales in the U.S. where the escapades take place. Human beings are nowhere in sight.

Embedded among the adventures are the yings and yangs of theology, the environment, fatherly advice, and species knowledge. Abundant dichotomies appear as themes: good vs. evil, flight vs. fight, tyranny vs. democracy. The aphorisms are homespun and spot on, including "the sacrifice is greater if deferred", an expansion of 'first you work and then you play.'

Again, I applaud the author for this book - a treasure for his son and for children everywhere!
