John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.

Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.

Seguimos con los 4F de John Byrne, que se están convirtiendo en una de mis etapas favoritas del cómic Marvel (que le vamos a hacer, los 4F nunca han sido mi grupo favorito, y he llegado a estos muy tarde). Y después de los números en los que se pone fin de una forma muy triste al segundo embarazo de Sue Richards (tremendo el giro, la verdad es que uno no espera que una historia de superhéroes donde todo es posible, vaya a terminar de una forma tan brutal), Byrne se lleva a los 4F de nuevo a vivir aventuras frenéticas, empezando por enfrentarlos a Terminus en la que sería la primera aparición de este gigantesco conquistador alienígena que amenaza con destruir el mundo, y que va a poner a los 4F en grandes aprietos. Y después, si creíamos que lo sabíamos todo sobre la familia Richards, vamos a descubrir que no, que aún nos queda mucho. Y vamos a empezar por conocer a Nathaniel Richards, el padre de Reed, que resulta ser también inventor y viajero en el tiempo, y que ha dado con sus huesos en un universo alternativo, al que los Cuatro Fantásticos y Wyatt Wingfoot (que se convierte en una especie de quinto miembro en estos números), van a viajar para buscar a Nathaniel Richards.

Y por último, Byrne va a hacer coincidir dos historias en un experimento curioso que las va a contar en paralelo. Por un lado, vamos a tener el regreso de la Cosa a la Tierra desde Mundo de Batalla, para encontrarse con la relación que ha nacido entre la Antorcha Humana y Alicia Masters, lo que lleva a un enfrentamiento entre ambos (Ben viene pensando en dejar a Alicia y fue el que se quedó viviendo en otro universo sin avisarla, pero en fin...). Por suerte (no soy justo con esto, soy muy fan de esta alineación con Hulka), la Cosa vuelve a la Tierra pero no a la colección de 4F. Por otro lado, y mientras, una vecina cotilla va a acusar a los Benjamin (el alter ego de los Richards que viven en un barrio residencial de Connecticut) de brujería, lo que va a llevar a una exorcista llamada Elspeth Cromwell a utilizar todos sus recursos para destruirlos... y va a llevar a un enfrentamiento directo entre Mister Fantástico, la Chica Invisible, Franklin y el Doctor Extraño con el mismísimo Mefisto, en un encuentro que incluye uno de esos momentos de la historia de Marvel de los que había oído hablar mucho pero que nunca había leído... y que mola muchísimo. Solo puedo decir que el prota es Franklin y que Mefisto...

Que mola muchísimo, vaya. Todo. El dibujo (aunque ya vemos en muchas viñetas al Byrne más vago, el de los fondos en blanco o amarillo) es tremendo, el guion es la leche... En fin, lectura obligada.

A great collection of Fantastic Four stories, with artwork and scripts from John Byrne. Lots of action, some soap opera and a dash of humor as She-Hulk is photographed topless by a sleaze magazine publisher and she attempts to get the film back. Enjoyable all around.
