Fire-Bearers’, is the much anticipated climatic conclusion to the intriguing Z-Rod epic set in 6th century Scotland. Alongside the increasingly divergent lives of the two main protagonists are the well-crafted characters who shape the outcomes of momentous events. We are brought to the brink, identifying with their experiences of strife and war, faith and heartfelt longings, wondering if they will succeed in their goals. Can the many obstacles to love be removed for the characters who briefly held hands at the very beginning of the trilogy? Does King Brude come to acknowledge a greater King? Can a treacherous cousin ever be forgiven? And what of the prophecy that the humble hero will ‘return east with great peace?
6th Century Scotland and the Mysterious Picts Come Alive in this Compelling Saga
This well-researched story unfolds among the northern Picts as cousins Oengus and Taran vie for the position of warlord. Fearing for his life, Taran chooses exile embarking on a spiritual quest while relinquishing his right to the throne. Meanwhile his cousin Oengus, now the warlord, seeks a life filled with power, control and fame. Taran’s quest and his maturation is wrought with great understanding and sensitivity. This story takes place as Christianity arrives among the Picts providing for a fast-paced compelling story. I found myself transported back to people and the land of the 6th century. I thoroughly enjoyed and learned from all three books and recommend them highly.
Absolutely Brilliant, couldn't put it down! I can highly recommend this brilliant conclusion to an amazing trilogy. While it is a gripping tale full of adventures it is also a moving story about faith, about courage and about trust. I found the maps at the front very helpful especially when used together with the glossary of ancient place names. As with books one and two, the beautifully vivid descriptions of the Scottish landscapes throughout the story were a joy to read. I will miss these very real characters, both warriors and saints, that I have come to know. What a gifted author!
Compelling drama throughout as prophecies are realised, old wounds are healed, and new life in Christ is made possible in the darkness of pagan culture by the word and the spirit at work in the lives of Taran and other pioneer Celtic missionaries. Imaginative use of many biblical incidents gives the narrative a new testament feel which greatly adds to the value of the book as a testimony to God's faithfulness to his promises.
Well worth the wait for book 3 of this trilogy. Great development of the characters and I will miss travelling with them. I can highly recommend this book.
