A dedicated gamer, Riko discovers what it's like living with a cat—and she 'levels up' in responsibilities and skills every day! Musubi, her cute new companion, tries to understand Riko's behavior through a cat's worldview, and Riko uses lessons drawn from video games to guide her in pet care. Enjoying their time together, Riko learns more about cohabitating with a cat, as lessons in grooming, play, and personal space continue to be learned.
Wataru Nadatani’s hilarious manga series is translated by Zack Davisson (Demon Days, Kaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan) and lettered by Susie Lee of Studio Cutie (Oh My Goddess!, Gantz).
Okay, apparently three volumes is as long as I can tolerate a cutesy, slice-of-life look at a woman playing video games and loving on her cat. I perked up a little bit when a Minecraft parody popped up, but I was frustrated to see it serve as a basis for a dream sequence (I hate those things!) and get dropped after a single chapter.
Musubi continues to be a furry bundle of energy, but Riko continues to both learn and monologue, only one of which is particularly effective.
The irony of this series’ title is that I would like this story better if it was Cat + Gamer - Gamer. Riko’s obsessions can be a LOT and distract from the more interesting parts of the story. This typically has been leavened by Musubi, his expression on top of the TV this volume is a work of art, but really got on my nerves here.
What’s more boring than watching somebody play a video game? (sorry, streamers, I am old, you see) Watching somebody play a knock-off version of a popular game with vague rules that don’t exist within any context to make it interesting.
Oh, they give you explanations of concepts like tanking in games (shout-out to fellow tanks), sure, but anything on the screen is so flipping dull. And Riko never keeps quiet about what’s going on. I know she’s supposed to be talking to the cat, but it’s so irritating.
As a means to an end, it could be more exciting. Or at all. Part of it is Japan’s wonky trademark laws; Starbooks and Winstagram get the job done, yes, but half-assing parodies of Dragon Quest and Assassin’s Creed in pursuit of Riko’s borderline delusional behaviour (you refer to yourself as the healer at your workplace and see how quickly you get a wide berth) contribute woefully little.
The cat stuff is still good, the bath chapter is pretty funny, and I love how realistic all Musubi’s behaviours are. There’s tons of adorable in this story, but it could stand to lose Riko’s part in it. Musubi is more than enough and that contrast isn’t giving it the punch the author thinks it is.
3 stars - cute cat, underwhelming wrapping around it. I don’t think this is necessarily being helped by how fast the volumes are coming out here either, as I imagine this holds up far better in smaller doses.
As with the previous books in the series, this is a light, entertaining look at a young woman who is a gamer and her cat. Never having had a pet before, there is a bit of a learning curve. The illustrations are delightful!
Too cute!! The carving out gaming time chapter was so relatable! 🤣 My cats used to love their “kickaroo” like the kicking toy at the end of this volume. I miss having a cat around! 😭
We see Riko squeeze as much gaming time as she can while dealing with a hectic work schedule and Musubi takes her first bath and turns her new play toy into smithereens. A (100%/Outstanding)
This is ridiculously adorable. Favorite volume so far. This series is so fun, funny, and relatable. I really enjoy reading about my fellow nerds and cat lovers, and this manga has it all.
Taking a cheeky wink at kitty care and antics, at the excitement of a new game that you really want to play, and at some games we know and love, this remains one of my Manga faves. Kitty assassin claws and midnight rampages abound, as the cat + gamer cross references continue
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani (Vol 3-5) Writing: A Art: A Story: A- Characters: A Setting: A- Best Aspect: All 3 are a lot of fun. This is fun series. Worst Aspect: The sections where the cats ‘talk’ could be a little longer. Recommend: Yes.
Informative and consistently funny, if you relate to cats. Expertly drawn and a quick read. Full disclosure... It may have helped my rating that my ferocious lap kitty was purring beside me while I finished the book!
This volume is definitely cute, but it doesn't feel like it has the pet owner milestones of the previous two volumes. It's mostly repetitive play video games, get interrupted by cat.
Again, 3.5. So adorable and continue to love the art style. This one felt a little more choppy than the last two. I wish we had seen more with the social media account or more with Riko's sister. Still an adorable and enjoyable story :)

Hard to be mad at that cute adorable face!!" July 28, 2024 – page 108 64.29% "Okay that was a little weird. Fever dream of something similar to minecraft?? Kinda strange..." July 28, 2024 – page 126 75.0% "So funny seeing Musubi ripping off the hat every time. Reminds me of my cousin...couldn't keep anything on long enough for a picture...hats, headbands, bows, nothing LOL!" July 28, 2024 – page 144 85.71% "With how active he is, how was he so calm in the bath??" July 28, 2024 – page 159 94.64% "Riko can be a little over the top at times...especially when she applies her gaming attitude towards everyday things. But kind of hilarious too"
I still love the adventures of Riko and Musubi, but now it feels more of the same thing of part 1 and 2. Riko is still learning about cats and Musubi is growing into a playful and adventurous cat, but maybe a third character (human or cat) would be a good idea to get new things started. Also, the games that Riko is playing, refers to existing games. Interesting, but Riko sees herself as the healer at her work or for Musubi's toy or she sees Musubi's toy as a tank...That becomes a bit disturbing after 3 books. Riko's world circles around gaming, not doing overtime at work and Musubi. I feel a bit sad for her that her world feels so small.
Nopealukuista söpöä viihdettä, seassa paljon oikeaa kissafaktaakin (kuten mikä on oikeaoppinen tapa leikata kynnet).
I'm still loving it! Admittedly, each chapter is beginning to get pretty repetitive, but it's still a fun, comedic, and lighthearted manga, purr-fect for gamers, cat lovers, and anyone in-between! The chapters are short but accurate to how cats generally behave, and I love the gaming elements too, as a gamer I really enjoy the humour. I'm super excited to read the next volume after being told that Riko gets a new kitty addition to the family! I can't wait to see more of Musubi and how he reacts.
Daily life continues for our heroine and her cat: she cuts his nails, he plays with a plastic bag, you know, just daily life with a cat. I don't know why I'm not bored with this series yet, but it's the best antidote for a bad mood! Strangely enough, I even prefer this one to the previous volume. I think you need to take some time between Reading each volume otherwise it's way too repetitive. so glad I lost under the couch for a week or two 😹
This series has been cute but I don’t think I’m going to continue with the series. I was hoping by the 3rd volume there would be a little more substance to the plot but even the things that I thought would develop into more were left in the dust.
