Matt Tavares was born in Boston, and grew up surrounded by books and reading. From the time he was very young, his mother read to him every night, and his family made countless trips to the public library. Years later, as a studio art major at Bates College, he rediscovered his love for picture books, and decided to try to make his own.

For his senior thesis project, Matt wrote and illustrated a story called Sebastian's Ball, which eventually became Zachary's Ball, Matt's first published picture book. Zachary's Ball went on to win a Massachusetts Book Award Honor, and was named one of Yankee Magazine's 40 Classic New England Children's Books.

Since then, Matt has published eighteen more books and has won several awards, including three Parents' Choice Gold Awards, an Orbis Pictus Honor, and two ALA Notable books. His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration, the Brandywine River Museum, and the Mazza Museum of Picture Book Art.

When Matt's not working in his studio on his latest book project, he travels the country speaking (and drawing) at schools, libraries, conferences, and bookstores. He has presented at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Eric Carle Museum, the White House Easter Egg Roll, and he's even done a few book signings at Fenway Park.

Matt lives in Maine with his wife, Sarah, and their two daughters.

Dasher loves the sound of Christmas carols and follows the sound to a village, attracted by the Christmas lights. But then she can't find her way back to the North Pole! Her mother always told her to look for the North Star to find her way home, but the skies are cloudy with snow, and Dasher can't see any stars. A small child might be able to help Dasher return to the North Pole in time to pull Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve.

This is such a beautiful book! The story is so sweet and touching. I really love the way Dasher has this peaceful spirit even in the middle of adversity. It's like Christmas is a faith she carries in her heart that strengthens her when things go wrong.

The illustrations are so gorgeous! Every page is like a winter wonderland of snowy dreams. I wish I could take out the pages and frame them on my walls. The art is just THAT good! I love the contrast between the cool colors of the snow and the warmth of the twinkle lights and firelight from windows. It's really beautiful!

Yes, I did buy and read a 40-page illustrated children's book to help me complete my reading challenge before next week. It's called 'not giving up when you have set yourself a target'.

Once, the reindeer lived in a small pen as part of a traveling circus, but Dasher dreamed of the day she would venture to the land of the north star, a place she'd only heard about in stories. One stormy night, the gate breaks, and Dasher makes a dash for it. But she can't find the North until a man in a red coat meets her and she learns that her true wish is bigger than she imagined.

This is definitely a cozy Christmas story. Really lovely artwork and a beautiful message about family and belonging. It's not a terribly original story, but it's well-written and great for the holiday season.

Such a sweet story about one of Santa's reindeer who slipped away for a little pre-Christmas excursion of her own. Dasher just wanted to see some of the Christmas lights simply couldn't wait until Christmas Eve to see them.

An exhausted and lost Dasher meets a young boy named Charlie who helps Dasher find her way back to the North Pole.

A sweet story.

Sweet, kind, and good-hearted story about a reindeer who takes a wrong turn while exploring and is helped back to her North Pole home thanks to a child, a compass, and some Christmas magic.

A sweet little beautifully illustrated book by Matt Tavares about the adventurous reindeer named Dasher. She could hardly wait for Christmas and kept asking her mom how many more "sleeps" until Christmas. Her mother told her one night, "if you ever get lost, just look for the North Star. You can always find your way back home."

You can read of Dasher's adventure when she decided to venture out on her own. You will discover the small child who helped Dasher when she was tired and hungry. The child gave Dasher a gift, besides carrots, that would help her back home. In return, when Santa and the reindeer were out delivering toys to children, Dasher had Santa return a favor to the little child that helped her so much.

DASHER CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS is a sweet holiday picture book that extends Dasher's story with a new tale of adventure and curiosity. Dasher loves living at the North Pole with her family, but as Christmas gets closer, she finds her impatience growing, ready to see Christmas lights and hear carols. As Christmas nears, Dasher feels like she cannot wait another night and sets out on her own to find some Christmas celebrations. She does, and it is just as wonderful as she imagined - but when she tries to head home, a storm prevents her from seeing the North Star, and she gets lost. With the help of a child and their compass, Dasher is able to find her way home in the nick of time.

What I loved: For fans of the original story, this sequel is sure to be a hit, expanding the story and world with more Christmas joy. The illustrations are elegant and lush, capturing the detailed scenes and characters beautifully. They have a classic and timeless feel that brings the story to life on each page. The plot itself repeats some of the phrasing and concepts of the first book, tying them together through their similarities, such as when Dasher leaves her sleeping family and when she flies. This story is complex and has some depth, which will appeal to older readers. Even with a dash of danger when Dasher gets lost temporarily, it manages to keep the holiday spirit and quickly resolves this with a new friend and help offered. The ending features a lovely thank you from Dasher and a special gift.

The child in the story is not gendered, which adds a nice touch for children to see themselves in the telling. The joy of the holidays and all the beauty in the celebration of Christmas is captured throughout the story, making this another classic to enjoy during the season.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, some of the pages were tough to read in low light, with font that was too close in color to the background. This makes it tough to read as a bedtime story. That being said, most pages featured the text printed in white boxes, which were high contrast and easy to read. Additionally, as another small thing, without the element of danger forcing Dasher to leave her family, this book features Dasher leaving her family and getting lost, which may be tough for sensitive readers and may be a concept worth discussing in terms of not sneaking away at nighttime.

Final verdict: DASHER CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS is a lovely picture book that embodies the Christmas spirit with a charming reindeer children know and love. Highly recommend for fans of the first story to expand their holiday reading with this joyful new tale featuring Dasher.

This is a beautiful story that kids will enjoy. Dasher is a young reindeer and decides to go exploring one night. However, after getting lost she meets a young boy named Charlie who shares a special item to help Dasher get home. The illustrations are outstanding and draw a reader in. Highly recommended for kids in Grades K-3.

I'm always on the lookout for new Christmas picture books. Matt Tavares' latest book, Dasher Can't Wait for Christmas, is a beautiful addition to the Christmas book canon! The rounded renderings of the reindeer and trees evoke a quiet softness. The moody, blended colors make you feel the wintry scenes. I recommend that families put this title in their holiday book-reading rotation, especially if you're looking for a new twist on standard tales.

Dasher, the young doe who, together with her family of flying reindeer, revolutionized Santa's yearly Christmas Eve gift-giving journey in author/illustrator Matt Tavares' eponymous first picture book chronicling her adventures, returns in this second seasonal tale. Eager for Christmas, Dasher takes to the sky on the night before Christmas Eve, drawn by the sound of carols from the closest town. When a snowstorm obscures the North Star, the wayward deer cannot find her way home, and becomes confused and exhausted. Landing near an isolated house, Dasher is aided by a kindhearted young boy, eventually returning to the North Pole thanks to his help...

I loved Dasher when it came out in 2019, so when I heard that a follow-up had come out, I lost no time in requesting it from my local library. I am certainly glad that I did, as I found Dasher Can't Wait for Christmas a winsome Christmas picture book, one that pairs an engaging holiday adventure with some sweet illustrations. That being said, I can't say that I enjoyed this one as much as the first. Somehow, it just wasn't as emotionally engaging, and the artwork didn't seem quite on the same level. I can't actually recall the medium used in some of Tavares' other work, but here the illustrations were created digitally. Perhaps that was the difference? Or perhaps both books (as well as Tavares' gorgeous Red and Lulu ) had digital artwork, and this one just didn't strike as much of a chord with me? Whatever the case might be, I don't want to overstate it. I still found this one charming, and think young fans of Santa, his reindeer, and the entire Santa Claus story will as well. It is to them, and to those who fell in love with Dasher in the first book, that I would recommend this book.

Note: If half stars were available, this would be a 3.5-star book for me, but as they're not, I'm rounding up in honor of the season.

In Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas, Matt Tavares continues the endearing story line he began with Dasher, telling kids about Santa’s Christmas deliveries from the perspectives of Santa’s reindeer.

Dasher is the youngest of the reindeer helping Santa, and shares the same impatience and excitement for the holidays that many young children feel. As Tavares explained in an interview: “Dasher is a little kid, in a lot of ways. She’s adventurous, curious, kind, and brave. And like a lot of little kids, Dasher has a very hard time waiting for Christmas!”

On the night before Christmas Eve, Dasher thought she heard Christmas carols, and got so excited, she ran off and flew towards the music. Then she saw colorful lights - Christmas lights! - and flew faster. She found them, and was enjoying the spectacle so much she barely noticed it had started to snow and that the sky had turned into a blanket of white. She couldn’t find the North Star, so she couldn’t find her way home to the North Pole.

Exhausted and hungry, she stopped at a house with a beautiful lit-up Christmas tree in the front yard. A little girl came out, and gave Dasher what she needed to find her way home. With Santa’s help, Dasher found a way to repay the child.

Evaluation: This heartwarming story and gorgeous illustrations also by Tavares will appeal to the intended audience of 3-8 in multiple ways. What kids can’t relate to the impatience they feel before a holiday, or getting carried away by excitement, or the fear of getting lost, the relief of getting saved, and the magic of the kindness of strangers? This book shows that Christmas is about more than getting gifts, while its lack of any religious content makes it relatable to kids of all faiths.

Dasher can't wait for Christmas and is so excited that as soon as she sees lights, she allows her curiosity to pull her in their direction. But the snow seems to fall harder and harder and hides her way home. Finding a house with a bright tree, Dasher decides to rest until morning but finds a surprise waiting for her when she awakens. A child named Charlie asks if Dasher is lost and gives her a compass to guide her way back to the North Pole. Here, she asks Santa to help repay Charlie's generosity.

DASHER CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS is a holiday story about kindness and adventure with stunning illustrations. The illustrator didn't skip the details on these pictures and I love the vibrance of the Christmas lights. Dasher represents your standard curious child and shows them the consequences of straying too far from home. It also teaches that kindness and helping one another is important because you never know what someone is going through. Poor Dasher wouldn't have found her way home without the help of Charlie.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this for Christmas time and for those children who love reindeer. It's a cute and unique story to share with others during the holiday season.

Last year, when Dasher met Santa and began his special work helping deliver gifts to children worldwide, it became his treasured memory. This year, the day before Christmas Eve, Dasher "can't wait," as the title says. His mother has always told him to follow the North Star, and he'll always be able to find his way home. That night, he believes he hears carols and takes off for a little jaunt. He plans to be back before anyone notices. Spotting the sparkling holiday lights he loved before, he lands at one house, finds he's tired, and decides to take a little nap. He wakes in the morning with snow falling and a young child watching. Oh no! The North Star is not visible! What happens with the child helping is a story for Christmas, kindness done, and Dasher helped. Matt Tavares' creation of a new story for kids to read and smile about, perhaps imagining they might be that child. His illustrations are wintry wonders with night-sky beauty, whether clear or snowy! The glimpses of Santa are a pleasure to see, and this new story of an adventure with Dasher will make readers ask, will another one come next year?

Dasher Can't Wait for Christmas is a beautiful children's Christmas book about one of Santa's reindeers and is the sequel to 'Dasher'.

In this story Dasher is super excited for Christmas and to be pulling Santa's sleigh again. She is that excited that when she hears singing in the distance she follows the sound knowing that she just has to look for the North star to return home. However, it isn't long before the snow arrives and the cloud block the starry night sky and Dasher is lost. How will she get back?

The book is perfect for a Christmas read for little one. The tale is heart-warming and gentle and I can she children being invested in how Dasher will get home.

It is a quick read and contains amazing artwork. My only tiny niggle was that a couple of the pages had the black text on dark blue background so it was hard to read it. All the other text was written in white boxes.

Overall, a must read for Christmas and I hope that there will be more Dasher books to come in the future.

This is a lovely follow-up picture book to Matt Tavares' Dasher, which was a fun how Santa got his reindeer origin story. This book follows Dasher as she tries to wait patiently for her favorite holiday, Christmas, but instead she sneaks off at night to visit nearby Christmas festivities. The narrative makes for a nice bedtime read aloud and the story feels like a classic Christmas book. The lyrical narrative and lush illustrations all set a nice tone, and at the heart of the story is a nice message about kindness and helping strangers.

Note that Dasher decides to sneak away at night from her mom in this story and ends up getting lost --that might be a sensitive topic for some children.

I’m sorry to say this fell a bit flat for me. The illustrations are still lovely but the story just felt a tad bland, dare I say? It’s decent, certainly. Just, somehow didn’t have the emotional resonance or creativity I would look for in a five-star read. I can’t help but wonder if this was rushed together when the first book was such a success. Don’t let my bah humbug deter you, though; I imagine children who enjoyed the first book will like to see Dasher in the sequel. Note that it does involve Dasher running off on her own and getting lost so some sensitive young readers may worry about Santa’s reindeer being in potential peril or why Santa didn’t come find her (unless we are to suspect that Santa knew all along and let her have the adventure?) though the peril never gets too intense and it is nice to see the little girl being the heroine in this story and her kindness and generosity are admirable.

This is the second book Matt Tavares has done on Dasher. I think he should do one story for each reindeer. That would be cool. Give each of them a personality and a story. Anyway.

Dasher loves Christmas so much she just can't wait for the night. When she sees lights in the sky glowing, she takes to the sky to go look at the festival of people gathered around a Christmas tree singing. How she loves that. The night is cloudy and it's starts to snow. She doesn't know how to get home. She's lost.

She find another tree in a yard to sleep at and the next day a little kid helps her out.

The artwork in the story is amazing. Some of the details of the reindeer is wonderful. There is lots of night and snow, so he plays with those cool colors. It's really pretty. Another fun Christmas book to have around.

Story 2/5 Illustrations 10/5

The story had very little substance and very minimal story. Basically a young reindeer flying through the sky, receiving a gift and giving a gift. Perfect for a 2-3 yr old, but the story itself may not hold interest of a 4-5 yr old.

On the other hand, as an adult I've flipped through this book 5 times in 24 hrs after reading it because the illustrations are gorgeous. They remind me of the holiday illustrations when I was small with lots of beautiful detail. So much for young little eyes to look at and an excellent way for them to learn how to put imagery to simple words as they read.

The night time scenes with lights in the village, the string lights on trees are beautifully done.

A beautiful book to add to your child's christmas collection as a hand-me-down for future generations.

I'm biased, I fear, because I fell in love with Dasher last year. To have a return of a Christmas favourite sparks all the joy for the holidays that I could ever need.

This book does not disappoint (if I had to be picky, I would see Dasher had slightly more beautiful illustrations then Dasher Cant Wait for Christmas) and I loved getting to see what Dasher, with the goodnatured heart, got up to this year.

An easy five stars - my first for the festive season!

Another Christmas story to add to our Christmas book list. This is the second book that we have read about Dasher. This book have really cute illustrations that are bright and colorful. I loved how the reindeer has a personality that really shined on every page. The story is such a cute story of friendship. I loved how it came around in the full circle. My kids really enjoyed listening to me read this book. My youngest wanted to read again the next day (which means she really liked it.) I highly recommend checking out this Christmas tale.

In 2019, Matt Tavares gave us a wonderfully illustrated picture book telling us how Santa got his reindeer. In the newest “installment”, we see that Dasher is so excited about Christmas coming that he takes off early just to squelch his excitement. But, oh no, a storm arrives so he can no longer see the North Star – how will he get back home in time?
A perfect sequel to “Dasher” and sure to be another holiday favorite read.

As in the first book about Dasher, one of Santa's reindeer, the illustrations win the day in the sequel, Dasher Can't Wait for Christmas. The stunning digitally rendered art leaps from the page in bright hues and sparkling detail. The story follows Dasher as she slips away Christmas Eve to visit a nearby village, drawn in by the sound of Christmas carols and twinkling lights. As she enjoys the scene, she doesn't notice the storm until it's too late. Despite her best efforts she's soon lost in a blizzard. A young boy finds her in his yard and gives her his compass to help her find the North Star which will lead her home. Naturally, Dasher finds a way to return the kindness, with Santa's help. As with the first story about Dasher, her enthusiasm shines through the story, even though it leads her to make a well-intentioned but risky choice. This tender story of a kindness given and a kindness returned carries with it the sweet magic of the Christmas season.
