I'm currently in the process of doing the breathing exercises so I'll have to report back once I've done them properly a bit more. The book is a short read and is well written but the first half sounds like an infomercial where the tantalizingly tell you what their product can do without giving it away. I half expected to be asked to buy a second book to find out how I could improve my breathing. As a friend had recommended the book to me already, I didn't need to be sold on the idea. Fortunately, the second part of the book is a lot more helpful and fit for purpose.
Over several years I have purchased over 16 of these books and given them away. I originally bought this for my Mom to try to lose weight. She is not physically able to exercise. I am a firm believer in this method and the author, Pam Grout, writes it with a soft humor and with much knowledge. Very recommended to all....young and old and everyone in between!
This is an easy to read & follow book. It was written by the same author who wrote "E Squared", but I like this much better, as I believe it is written in a better tone and contains information more suited to my needs & interest.
The premise of the book is that how we breathe effects our metabolism, which in turn effects our weight.... I can get behind this thought. It explains that most of us breathe a shallow breath from out chest, not a deep breath for the bottom of our lungs & diaphragm.
The book cover states: "How to lose weight by changing the way you breathe; Burn calories more efficiently; Increase your energy; & Reduce stress & anxiety"
I know that deep breathing is a technique used in yoga & other meditations.... I did not know (but would have, had I given it any prior thought) that deep breathing removes residual stale air from the lungs, thus decreasing the fetid air which might cause illness. It also refreshes the oxygen in the cells of the body, which in turn become more active fat burners.
So when I remember, I change my breathing (as I tend to hold my breath and go still)... If I remember I'll let you know in a few months the results..... But I'm pretty sure I have already begun to slow down & relax a bit.
This is the same author as "God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days" - she is extremely witty and lighthearted. When I take the breathing taught in this book seriously my body definitely feels better, everything is metabolized easier and weight loss does happen.
I highly recommend this book. I haven't really started "the program" yet, and I am probably going to adjust it a little bit (the first weekly breath was silly, I am glad I read the rest of them, because I want to give them a try. The first one "the guided tour" -- I am not going to give a chance, because, silly.)
I have never been the diet type, I like my food too much, and am way too picky for any of the "wonder diets" to work (vegetables are not my friend, and never will be) -- so to try to lose weight (actually, that is a side benefit...this book focuses on being healthy and happy...the weight will come) by breathing better sounds great to me.
I am passing this book on to a gal at work who always seems to be on a diet.
This is a very cheerfully written, easy-to-read book in which we are exhorted to breathe more fully. I find it hard to believe that this will 'simply melt away the pounds;' However, breathing better certainly won't hurt me.
No idea how many stars to assign. Grout can write -- This was an enjoyable read. The breath exercises definitely feel good. Still, I have no idea whether anything she has written is true. I'll give the breathing a try for a while and assess then.
This was one of those books that you read and think hopefully to yourself "maybe this is it! maybe I've found a secret and it's so easy!" and then later you're embarrassed because you realize it's so silly. It probably didn't help that I was also reading The Oxygen Advantage at the same time which tells you the complete opposite is true but with much bigger words and with scientific charts.
I don't always write reviews on book I have read, but this one deserves to be paid attention to. Especially since most people reach to Pam Grout's book because they are looking for answers on their weight loss problem.
I actually started reading Jumpstart your metabolism because I love the author. I read to more of her books and I find her writing style to be easy going and delightful. In this book she took a concept, which is vast and complicated and turned it into a tale of success.
Who does not want to lose a few pounds? I know I wouldn't mind getting rid of some love handles but the more I read, the more I figured that there is more to this book then the beauty it can make you achieved. I tried the first exercises in a point when I felt fatigued and I had no desire to do anything rather than read, sleep and repeat. After just one session of 10 deep breaths, I started packing my bag to go swimming. It is amazing how fast it starts working. I even noticed I didn't need my morning coffee to wake up anymore (although I still drink it because I find it delicious). As for the weight loss part, after five days my bf said I looked somehow leaner. I don't know about that and it is still too early to tell but I feel good and this is what matters. I totally recommend the book and just have some patience and keep breathing.
Pam grout is a very witty writer. She explains the most difficult things also with so much ease. This is the second book of Pam Grout that I started reading. I took around a month to complete this book. This book basically emphasize on the very simple yet indispensable thing in our lives “Breathing”. She explains in the book that best medicine any one can ever get is correct breathing. We only breathe up to one fifth of our lung capacities .Correct breathing can result in weight loss without much effort, Improvement in metabolism, reduction in anxiety levels and it reduces the chances of one having chronic disease like tumors, cancer, diabetes, Blood pressure and heart attack. She has illustrated many breathing practices in the book that are really fun to do and helps in consuming more oxygen over a period of time.My favorite quote from the book is “He lives the most who breathes most air, He who half breathes, Half lives”
This book is from the 90s and you can tell. However, it does have Grout's trademark wit and once you get past the Tony Robbins worship there's some great breathing exercises to try. I did find though that I was pushing too hard to make them work and what I really need are exercises that connect to natural breathing, which is referenced in the bibliography. There were two that interested me that are now out of print, but God bless the internet - I was able to find pdf copies of both and they are next on my list. I really appreciated the first part of the book, the reminder to really think about how I deep breathe. I was just expecting a little more.
Being a long-time yoga student, I've known the power of breathing, and I am constantly learning more and more about its benefits. This book is a great compilation of breathing techniques: some I've used regularly over the years; some I'm somewhat familiar with; and others were totally unknown to me, but well-worth trying. Although this book makes a lot of promises, especially in regards to "weight loss," I'm excited to incorporate the techniques into my daily routine and let "time will tell" reveal the benefits.
Come respirate?
I scanned the reviews for anyone who stuck with the exercises and dropped unwanted weight. The book is light and refreshing, and I love Pam Grout's life philosophy. If an easy read gets me to breathe more effectively, I'm okay if I don't lose weight...and yet...
Breathing for health is hardly a crackpot theory; I first read Andrew Weil promoting breathing exercises. It's just easier to absorb with a little humor and joie de vivre.
Non è un granché come libro, malgrado i tentativi di Pam di rendersi simpatica. Per la maggior parte sono chiacchiere, sembra più che altro di essere sulla spiagga a fare esercizi di aerobica.
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I was highly dubious, but was surprised to find that it all actually made quite a lot of sense. And the tongue-in-cheek writing style made it much more palatable. Weight loss theme aside, I really like the philosophy of how breathing can help regulate your mood better, give you more energy, and help expel more toxins from your body. I have no idea if I've lost weight in the last week since trying to breathe more deeply, but I have noticed more energy and a better grip on stress!

This book is inspiring! I'm have begun trying the different "Energy Cocktails" and am then going to start a breathing program with the ones that I like best!
Un libro strano, interessante per la metodologia, interessante per gli esercizi pratici ma in fin dei conti poco applicabile perché i risultati non sono così evidenti come l'autore vorrebbe far credere.
A must have for all writers of novels and fiction, this is a great guide to getting published. You'll still need to check each publsher's website for guidelines and open submission periods, but this is a great collection of resources so you'll know where to look. Great information right at your fingertips - can't beat it!
I disagree with a lot of the weight-loss oriented philosophy behind this book. I read it because it was recommended to me for the breathing exercises, not for the weight-loss program. With some adaptations to make those practices meaningful and body-positive for my own practice, the breathing exercises are great.
...if the breathing exercises bear fruit I will raise the rating to 4. 3.5 for now. it was skewed towards a narrow demographic and although a fun quick read it was to much of a "primer" for my tastes. Worth a quick read if the topic interests you. Her bibliography was interesting too at first glance....
I disagree with some of the things that Pam says...I am losing weight on counting calories and weighing myself every day...she says that this is unproductive...really? It's working for me! I've read better books about losing weight.
This book will help you find the right kind of agent or publisher. It has helped me in learning about the market and where I can go to find an agent. Even though I am not ready for my own agent, yet, I can see myself in the near future getting the latest copy of this book of the time.
