This was a series and author new to me- picked it up at a second hand book store since it looked like a fun teen mystery story. The series is about Holly Adams, a fifteen year old who had moved from London to Yorkshire where she befriends Tracey Foster an American girl who’s moved there with her mother post her parent’s divorce and Belinda Hayes, who’s crazy about horses (she has a thoroughbred Meltdown, who isn’t as much of a ‘poppet’ as she claims he is). The three girls set up a mystery club essentially to discuss detective stories but find themselves turning into detectives with real life mysteries to solve. This book, the fourth in the series, had Holly meet Mr and Mrs Benson an old couple who are being frightened by someone or something so much that they barely step out of their house. Also, they have a secret which they’re terrified someone will find out and so are reluctant to seek any help. Luckily the girls don’t need to be asked to solve the mystery—which gets them into their fair share of danger. This was a nicely written story with pretty likeable characters (they seemed more ‘old fashioned’ teens than modern ones) and the mystery itself was good with a few surprises at the end.

The first Mystery Club book I've read, and enjoyed. The detective trio are very real teenagers, solving mysteries between their other chores, including a younger brother, who tends to tag along. The girls are warm-hearted and ever wiling to help, showing great courage, even while shivering in their boots. A fun read.

The Mystery Club is a fantastic series that I first discovered in a London bookshop in 1996. I knew I had to read them all. Now I'm re-reading them. They are fun and unique mysteries. They are thrillers.

The Club consists of Holly, Tracy, and Belinda, 14 year-olds who are curious, brave, and want to help people. While delivering Meals on Wheels to a shut in couple, the Bensons, Holly detects a mystery. Who is trying to frighten the elderly couple out of their home? What goes on there during the night. The Bensons think they have a ghost. The Mystery Club doesn't think so. They refuse to go to the police, even when they get threatening letters. It's up to the girls to figure out what is going on and thwart the attempts to make them sign over their property rights. I must say that these girls are gutsy.

I loved this book, it’s mainly a book for tweens/ younger teenagers maybe 12 or 13 but I still really liked it. The plot was very predictable but there was one scene that I didn’t expect. I adored the main characters especially Belinda!

Continuing my reread of these childhood favourites, this was a good mystery. Some exciting scenes particularly involving Belinda's horse, and a few twists. Overall enjoyable!
