In The Refugees and Migrants , Sebastiano Salgado gives us portraits of children under the age of 15 from Mozambique, Rwanda, Croatia, Burundi, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Brazil, Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Angola, and many other countries who will bear the burden of an uncertain future. Part of a major exhibition at the United Nations in New York City during the Millenium Assembly in 2000, The Children is a companion volume to Salgado's Migrations.

About the author

Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado Júnior was a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist.
He traveled in over 120 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these have appeared in numerous press publications and books. Touring exhibitions of his work have been presented throughout the world.
Salgado was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant in 1982, Foreign Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992; and the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in 1993. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts at the Institut de France since April 2016.

Ninety black and white portraits of children from around the globe in similar poses and in similar circumstances. That is to say, each photograph is of a child surviving in near hopeless environments. Their young bodies frame too-old faces. As the photographer, Sebastiaõ Salgado, says in his arresting three page introduction, for that moment—that single frame—each declared, “I am here.”

This book will make you feel, even if it offers only reality and no solutions. I suppose that has been left up to the viewer. Even a quarter century after they were taken, the still images demand action.
