Introduction to Sports Medicine and Athletic Training - 3rd Edition by Robert C. France is a comprehensive guide to the ever growing world of fitness and health. In an era where many claims and fads are exposed to the public, this book clearly outlines proper nutrition, fitness, and treatment of injuries. From basic ankle taping to understandment of eating disorders, it is explicably obvious that this guide covers every topic in great detail. One important idea to note is that this book is aligned with Precision Exams and the National Consortium for Health Science Education. Each chapter contains objectives, key terms, and main idea segments. Each of these aspects allows for simpler explanations of complex ideas. Furthermore, since this is a resource for those in the medical field, the book heavily covers anatomy and has step by step pictures of different skills and techniques used by athletic trainers. The discipline of sports medicine is a fast developing field, quite simply this book is an excellent guide for beginner and mid-level students. Areas of conflict are few to arise since this book has been updated with the latest research from around the world. A section of this material that truly stuck out to me was “The primary reason athletes participate in athletics is for enjoyment and personal satisfaction” (France 102). This quote is very important because it encompasses what being an athletic trainer is truly about. At the end of the day, everything that an athletic trainer does is solely for the athlete. Their sole duty is to protect and care for an athlete, because athletics should be based on enjoyment. This book overall gave me great insight and helped further my understanding of Sports Medicine. It also served as a great aid for HOSA competitions. Health and fitness are topics not normally read about. Yet, this genre contains some of those most vital pieces of information to maintaining a healthy well-being. If this book sparked interest in your mind, I would highly recommend reading The Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal. This newly released book explores why exercise not only should be a source of joy and happiness but a cure to many modern sicknesses.

I used this book as a resource for a class that I taught at our local homeschool pod. I also bought the coordinating workbook. The high schoolers that took the class found the text easy to understand. I liked that each chapter contained review questions to make sure that the information was retained. In tandem with the workbook, which had reviews and quizzes to also help remember the info, it was great for a high school level intro to sports medicine.
