بعد تلقى الجيش البيروي شكاوى كثيرة حول اعتداءات الجنود في مناطق الأدغال النائية على نساء الفلاحين وبناتهم، تجد القيادة العسكرية الحل في تأسيس خدمة زائرات تتكفل بتوفير المتعة للجنود. فيكلف النقيب حديث الترقية بانتاليون بانتوخا بتأسيس خدمة دعارة للقوات المسلحة. ولأن بانتوخا من أشد ضباط الشوون الإدارية انضباطاً وفعالية وتحملاً للمسؤولية، فإن ما يحققه يفوق كل التوقعات.

About the author

Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquess of Vargas Llosa, more commonly known as Mario Vargas Llosa, was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist, and politician. Vargas Llosa was one of the Spanish language and Latin America's most significant novelists and essayists and one of the leading writers of his generation. Some critics consider him to have had a more substantial international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom. In 2010, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".
Vargas Llosa rose to international fame in the 1960s with novels such as The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros, 1963/1966), The Green House (La casa verde, 1965/1968), and the monumental Conversation in The Cathedral (Conversación en La Catedral, 1969/1975). He wrote prolifically across various literary genres, including literary criticism and journalism. His novels include comedies, murder mysteries, historical novels, and political thrillers. He won the 1967 Rómulo Gallegos Prize and the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award. Several of his works have been adopted as feature films, such as Captain Pantoja and the Special Service (1973/1978) and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977/1982). Vargas Llosa's perception of Peruvian society and his experiences as a native Peruvian influenced many of his works. Increasingly, he expanded his range and tackled themes from other parts of the world. In his essays, Vargas Llosa criticized nationalism in different parts of the world.
Like many Latin American writers, Vargas Llosa was politically active. While he initially supported the Cuban revolutionary government of Fidel Castro, Vargas Llosa later became disenchanted with its policies, particularly after the imprisonment of Cuban poet Heberto Padilla in 1971, and later identified as a liberal and held anti-left-wing ideas. He ran for the presidency of Peru in 1990 with the center-right Frente Democrático coalition, advocating for liberal reforms, but lost the election to Alberto Fujimori in a landslide.
Vargas Llosa continued his literary career while advocating for right-wing activists and candidates internationally following his exit from direct participation in Peruvian politics. He was awarded the 1994 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the 1995 Jerusalem Prize, the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, the 2012 Carlos Fuentes International Prize, and the 2018 Pablo Neruda Order of Artistic and Cultural Merit. In 2011, Vargas Llosa was made the Marquess of Vargas Llosa by Spanish king Juan Carlos I. In 2021, he was elected to the Académie française.

إيه يا يوسا دة:)

تبدأ الحكاية بقرار من القيادات العليا في جيش البيرو بتعيين القائد بانتاليون للقيام بتأسيس خدمة للزائرات (بائعات الهوي) للجنود لإشباع إحتياجاتهم الجنسية بعد قيامهم بعمليات إغتصاب وتحرش لبنات ونساء القرية.. وطبعاً بالخدمة دي هم بيساعدوا الجنود بجعلهم أكثر راحة وأكثر قدرة علي إحتمال ظروف خدمتهم...!

الرواية طبعاً فيها إنتقادات لاذعة للمنظومة العسكرية وإزاي بيقدروا يضفوا القدسية علي تصرفاتهم حتي لو كانت غير أخلاقية طالما دة في مصلحتهم..
طبعاً رواية زي دي لو حد غلبان من بلادنا العربية كان كتبها كان زمانه مرمي في السجن وعمره ما حيطلع منه:)

فكرة مجنونة من كاتب جرئ بطريقة سرد مختلفة جداً بس ممتعة في نفس الوقت..

مع الانتهاء من كل رواية ليوسا يزداد عشقي لقلم هذا الرجل❤️

لست مثل العالم كله. هذا هو سوء حظي. فأنا لا يحدث لي ما يحدث للأخرين. في صباي كنت أقل رغبة في الأكل مما أنا عليه الأن. و لكن ما إن منحوني مهمتي العسكرية الأولى في الإشراف على الوجبات حتى استيقظت فيّ شهية شرسة. صرت أمضي الوقت في الأكل. في قراءة وصفات الطعام. و تعلمت الطهو. و عندما بدلوا مهمتي. هوب! وداعا للطعام. بدأت أهتم بالخياطة. بالملابس. بالموضة. حتى ظن قائد الثكنة أنني مخنث. و كانت المسألة أنهم كلفوني بملابس الحامية. لقد انتبهت إلى ذلك الأن.

بنتاليون بانتوخا الضابط الملتزم أو بمعنى أدق المنضبط فما سمي الضابط بذلك الاسم إلا بانضباطه و خضوعه لرؤسائه و تماهيه في النظام.

لو كان الأمر بيدي لما كانت خدمة الزائرات قد ولدت أصلا. أتوسل إليكم أن تصبروا قليلا. أما بشأن بانتوخا فلا تذكر اسمه أمامي يا مونسنيور. إنه يتحمل جزءا كبيرا من الذنب في ما يحدث. فلو أنه نظم على الأقل الأمور بصورة بين بين. بشيء من الخلل. و لكن هذا الأبله حول خدمة الزائرات إلى الجهاز الأكثر فعالية في القوات المسلحة.

رغم اعتراض قائد مهم كالجنرال سكافينو على تكوين جهاز سري لإمداد الجنود بالعاهرات كخدمة توصيل للكتائب على امتداد الجبهة في الأمازون و رغم أن سبب انشاء هذا الجهاز هو إطفاء شهوة الجنود الذين تعددت حوادث اغتصابهم للقرويات و سكان الغابات بسبب بعد هؤلاء الجنود عن المدينة لفترات طويلة. إلا أن الموضوع محير في فهمه و في تقبله أو رفضه. على كل حال فقد تم إنشاء الجهاز و وجد بنتاليون نفسه بين عشية أو ضحاها قد تحول من ضابط برتبة نقيب إلى نقيب بلقب قوّاد.
شك الجنود في أول الأمر و ظنوا أنها مكيدة لاستدراجهم إلى أعمال شاقة أو مجرد مقلب من مقالب القيادة ثم لم بليث الشك أن تحول إلى ضحك صاخب فسخرية ثم فرحة طاغية.

حامية نهر سنتياجو تتلقى قافلة كل أسبوع و أنا قافلة كل شهر. إذا كنتم تظنون أن المدفعيين أقل رجولة من المشاة فإنني مستعد لأن أثبت لكم العكس.

كان هناك مثال أخر على تنافس و تباهي فصائل الجيش فيما بينهم عندما اعترضت البحرية على عدم إدراج مآثرها في نشيد العاهرات رغم اسهامها المميز في تكوين الفرقة.
تداخلت الحوارات كثيرا كأن يكون الحديث بين زوجة بنتاليون و أمه و حديث أخر بين بنتاليون و صديقه فيجعل يوسا الحوارين متداخلين فقرة من هنا و فقرة من هناك و يكون ذلك بصورة عبقرية جدا أحيانا و بدون داع في أحيان أخرى و لكنه مزعج و معقد في كل الأحوال.

الوضع هنا مختلف. يوجد زبائن على الدوام و أيام عمل من ثماني ساعات. و حضرتك تبقي كل شيء منظم و هذا يفتنهن.

تسابقت العاهرات على الانضمام لفرقة بنتاليون أو بانتالاند كما أطلقوا عليها فمن من العاهرات قد لا تلبي نداء الوطن و من منهم لا ترغب في الاستقرار الوظيفي و حماية الجيش و نظام العمل و الإجازات و الكشف الطبي و المعاملة كموظفة و مناضلة و شهيدة الواجب أيضا.

إنني أضاعف الأن الحراسة قبل يوم من وصول القافلة. و أضع خفراء في محيط المكان كله. الكتيبة كلها في حالة الجاهزية للقتال كي يتمكن الجنود من المضاجعة بسلام. يا له من وضع مضحك.

و القوات المسلحة كالعادة هي الجهة الوحيدة في أي بلد التي تستطيع تحضير العفريت بكل سهولة كما تستطيع صرفه بسلام و تستطيع أيضا إنكار وجود العفريت من الأساس كما تستطيع حبسه و محاكمته بل و قتله و التمثيل بجثته إذا لزم الأمر إن كان له جثة . علما بأن هذه المؤسسة العريقة لا تؤمن أصلا بوجود العفاريت أو أيا من الكائنات الماورائية كما لا تؤمن إلا بالوطنية و بتفسيرها الحصري الذي صنعته بنفسها و أعطت لنفسها الحق في تفسيره أو تغييره أينما شاءت و في الوقت و بالكيفية التي تريد و على الوجه الذي ترجوه.
و من هنا فقد صنعت جهاز الزائرات و مولته و رعته و يسرت له كل السبل ثم أنكرت وجوده في الوقت نفسه ثم عاقبت قائد الجهاز على ذلك ليس برغم نجاحه فحسب بل و بسبب هذا النجاح بالذات.
و كما في فيلم أرض الخوف عندما وجد يحي أبودبوره نفسه وحيدا و يعامله النظام الذي صنعه كتاجر مخدرات لا كضابط شرطه فإن بنتاليون هنا رفض أن يظل قوادا و فضل البقاء في بدلته العسكرية بدلا من البقاء في أرض ليست له.

Mission, oh so delicate and secret, because army and pimping do not even mix well. That is given to us by Captain Pantaléon Pantoja, chosen for his undeniable organizational skills, rigor, and blind obedience to his superiors. Embarrassed by the content of this mission, Pantaléon will put all its "professional conscience" at the Service of its success. He endeavored to recruit the most efficient visitors to meet the needs of his mates and profitably cost while maintaining optimal health and safety conditions and preserving an atmosphere of Service as military as possible.
A parody situation is more accentuated by the fact that our Pantaléon is a virtuous man who discovers a universe far from his and must hide his activities from his wife and mother. Despite a business plan to make a consultant fade with envy, the excellent wheels of the SVGPFA will somewhat have to seize by disruptive elements that the military logic of our fearless captain did not allow him to anticipate.
Suffice it to say that we are not bored in this novel and laugh a lot.
Vargas Llosa offers us a jubilant satire on military and religious fanaticism, also original in its form.
The author alternates different narrative forms, which energize the narrative, surprise, and contribute to its humor. Letters, radio broadcasting, and embedded dialogues indicate the speaker's actions and relations with soldiers about the Service of the visitors, where the antagonism between the form and the subject is hilarious.

You can't win 'em all. Captain Pantoja's Special Service is a brothel for the Peruvian army in the Amazonian basin. The book is a mixture of satire and slapstick comedy, but not really even close to the writing quality on The Time of the Hero, The Green House or Conversation in the Cathedral that proceeded it or Aunt Julia and The War at the End of the World which succeeded it. I only found it marginally humorous and could not help but be put off by its outright misogyny. Whatever, I will still continue to read other books from Vargas Llosa, this one is clearly not his at his finest.
I learned that - in fact - this was based on a true story and there is a famous movie about this story. Perhaps I'll need to re-evaluate my review sometime by watching the movie and re-reading the book. I also learned that this kind of "secret service" was very common in South America - near coal mines, etc.

Sé que existe la película, pero hasta el día de hoy no la he visto, así que no tengo ninguna referencia anterior. Las primeras páginas se me hicieron un poco tediosas y no sabía en qué dirección iba todo. Sin embargo, con el pasar de la historia me fui enganchando más y más. Sé que Vargas Llosa es uno de los grandes referentes de la literatura latinoamericana y por ende decidí leer este libro, ya que fue el primer libro de él que leí. En general es entretenido, pero me gusta que no se suente como una comedia graciosa nada más, sino que es una sátira fundamentada a la milicia en lo que hace -en cuanto a prostitutas- y cómo lo hace y el dinero que gastan en todo, las coimas, el contrabando y chantajes varios. Esta sátira tiene sus matices serios y no tan serios y por lo mismo creo que al final me terminó gustando. Me gustó mucho el lenguaje que se usa también, principalmente de la mamá y esposa de Pantoja, me recuerda a algunas personas que conozco.
Le pongo 3 estrellas porque si bien me gustó, no es nada extraordinario. Siento que no perdí mi tiempo leyendo este libro pero tampoco será nada inolvidable. Me gustó el estilo de Vargas Llosa y buscaré otro libro para leer de él. Quiero adentrarme más en su estilo y libros. Quizás algún día veré la película también.

بمجرد انتهائي من رواية "بالنتاليون والزائرات" للكاتب البيروفي "ماريو بارغاس يوسا"، وجدت نفسي في حيرة وتساؤل شديد يُلح على عقلي، لماذا أجلت القراءة لـ"يوسا" كل هذه السنوات؟ أُعطي الفرص لكتاب أخرين، بل فرص مُتعددة لكاتب واحد، ولا يزال بيني وبين "يوسا" جبل أكبر من جبل الانديز، ولكنك لن تعرف قيمة الكاتب الجيد إلا عندما تجرب الكاتب السيء، وهذه رواية وعلى الرغم من انتهاجها السخرية من أول الأحداث، ولكنها تحمل موضوعاً عميقاً، ورمزيات مُتعددة، وسرد غني ومُمتع، وحكاية من أعجب ما يُمكن أن تقرأ عنها، تخلط الواقع بالخيال، فتنسى أيهما الواقع وأيهما الخيال، وليس فقط بسبب إبداع يوسا، ولكن لأن الخيال أصبح واقعاً في عالمنا الحالي، فأصبح كل شيء يُمكن حدوثه مهما كان مُستغرباً أو شاذاً.

تبدأ الرواية بتكليف الضابط "بانتوخا بالنتاليون" بحل مشكلة الجنود بمنطقة نهر الأمازون، الذي يشتكي أهلها من الاعتداءات المُتكررة التي يقوم بها المُجندين، بسبب حرمانهم الجنسي، فاغتصبوا وانتهكوا كل ما طالتهم يديهم، مهما كانت منزلة ومرتبة المُعتدى عليها، هؤلاء الجنود أصبحوا كالوحوش الضارية، لا عقل لهم، وينهشون فريستهم بلا رحمة أو تورع، فيبدأ "بانتاليون" بإنشاء خدمة الزائرات -وهو اسم مُلطف للعاهرات- التي تقوم بالتنسيق بين الزائرات والجنود لإقامة علاقة جنسية برسوم معينة تُخصم من رواتب الجنود الشهرية، ويأخذ "بانتاليون" الأمر على عاتقه برسمية شديدة، هذا شخص وُلد ليخدم الجيش، والأسوأ أنه مؤمن بما يفعله، فهو يرى تسهيل العلاقات الجنسية جزءاً لا يتجزأ من خدمة الوطن، ترى الحماسة والاجتهاد في العمل من طرفه، مُتمثلاً في الجداول والرسوم البيانية والتقارير شديدة الجدية من جهته، ولكن من جهة القارئ ستكون شديدة الظرف والسخرية.

ينتقد "يوسا" من خلال روايته المنظمات العسكرية بأشكالها المُختلفة، وكيف يُمكن لهم أن تتغير مبادئهم وأهوائهم طالما تخدم مصلحتهم فقط، فبإنشاء خدمة الزائرات يُمكنك أن ترى أنها رمزية لما يكون الجيش قادراً على تنفيذه، القدرة على التحول من الشيء إلى الشيء المُضاد بمرونة عجيبة، سنجعل هناك كهنة بالجيش من أجل الطوائف الدينية، ولكننا سنقوم بتسهيل مضاجعات سرية يُشرف عليها الجيش بنفسه، يُمكنك أن تقيس الأمر على عدة جوانب، وفي كل مرة ستكتشف عبقرية الرمزية، واستخدام الزائرات بداخل الحكاية، ولم يكتفي "يوسا" بانتقاد المنظمات العسكرية، بل انتقد من المنظمات الدينية المتعصبة، منظمة الاعلام الذي يقبل الرشوة مُقابل تزييف الحقيقة، وانتقاد الشعب الذي يرى قادة الجيش كآلهة، لا يُمكن أن تُخطأ، حتى لو كان هذا الخطأ واضحاً للأعمى.

ختاماً..
رواية "بانتاليون والزائرات" هي تجربة مُمتعة بكل تأكيد، انتهجت السخرية من أول الصفحات، وكانت سخرية فعالة ومُضحكة، يمتلك الكاتب خفة ظل لم اتوقع أنها موجودة لديه، بالإضافة إلى رمزيات عديدة مُعقدة وبسيطة، وسرد مجنون وعبقري، مثل الاهتمام في تفاصيل كتابة التقارير، والمحادثات المُتداخلة المُربكة التي سرعان ما ستعتاد عليها، وجاءت النهاية شديدة الواقعية، للتأكيد أن في ظل الأنظمة العسكرية، كل شيء قابل للحدوث، مهما شطحنا بالخيال، والتفكير، فهم دائماً يجدون المُبررات، ودائماً ما يجدون موالسيهم. أليس كذلك؟

My Spanish is getting a little rusty. This work took me waaay longer than I'm used to in investing any given novel. But with the Peruvian storyteller this is another story altogether. You must at least once in your life read classics in their original language (which is why I should learn French sooner than later). The flavor of different character's vernacular would be lost in the translation: I've read so many of them in the case of M.V.L.

This is a hard sell. The picaresque novel, the megacomedic juggernaut, is rarely written or attained. "Aunt Julia" is the twin brother of this one--they both ridicule misogynism and inundate the tale with war torn realities that makes one know with absolute certainty that only M.V.L., the Rennaissance Man of all World-renowned Writers could have written it.

Strangely though, because of the spotlight of the #metoo movement, the tones of slight or inexcusable sexism are too much to bear. But this happened, too, when I saw "Book of Mormon", an illuminating work that seems to have no place in this global unhater ambiance.

من لم يقرأ لماريو بارغاس يوسا حتي الأن يكون قد فوت على نفسه وجبة أدبية دسمة بكافة النكهات، يوسا ككاتب يأخذك فى حكاياته العنكبوتية لتجد نفسك تتشابك مع خيوطها فتتعلق بها حتي النهاية حين يترك على وجهك إبتسامة رضا و تشبع أدبي خالص، فمع يوسا تجد نفسك تخوض كثير من التحديات أولها و أهمها انك لا تعرف ما انت مقبل عليه، قد تجد رواية سياسية و سيرة ديكتاتور و حكمه و قد تجد المؤامرة و حكاية دولة وقعت تحت مخالب أمريكا و ينقلك ببساطة معه لرواية رومانسية سامة لن تنساها أبدًا و قد يحكي تاريخ وثائقي لدولة فى أشد حروبها ضراوة و هنا فى بانتاليون و الزائرات فاجئني بحسه الساخر الهزلي من المؤسسة العسكرية فالرواية هزلية بقدر جديتها و نقدها اللاذع لمؤسسة لها احترامها فى كل البلاد .

يأخذنا يوسا فى رحلة بانتاليون عند انتقاله لمكان عمله الجديد مع عائلته فى منطقة الامازون بعد تكليفه بمهمة إيجاد حل لازمة الجنود هناك بسبب اغتصابهم للعديد من نساء القرية و المحيطين بها بسبب العزلة و عوامل الجو و بسبب حساسية المهمة يتم تكليفه بها سريًا بعيد عن الجيش و قدسيته مهما يجعل بانتاليون يؤسس خدمة الزائرات للحد من هذه الامور و منها جعل الجنود اكثر راحة و سعادة فى هذة الاجواء القاسية لتتطور الامور مع بانتاليون و منها مهمته التي جعلت منه قواد فى نظر الكثيرين و لكنه خدم الوطن فى نظر نفسه و كيف ان اقذر الأمور اللاخلاقيه مهما وصلت فى قذارتها يتم تبريرها طالما تحت مسمي خدمة الوطن .

أبدع يوسا فى سرد كوميديا سوداء ساخرة واقعية لابعد حد عن المؤسسة العسكرية و كيفية تنفيذ الأوامر فى الداخل و العبث الذي تدور به الأمور فى الداخل فى أغلب المؤسسات العسكرية لو تم الكشف عنها قد تهدم القدسية و الهالة الكبيرة التي تمتاز بها خاصة فى أمريكا اللاتينية و أوطاننا العربية، نقد صارخ للخرافات أيضًا الدينية التي تنتشر بكثرة فى امريكا اللاتينية و قد تناولها أيضًا يوسا فى ملحمته الأكبر حرب نهاية العالم .

رواية فكرتها متفردة لم تمر علي من قبل ولا أعتقد انها هتمر علي مستقبلًا، أحببت يوسا الساخر كثيرًا و لم اتوقعها منه خاصةً بعد كمية البؤس فى أعماله السابقة التي قرأتها، لازال يفاجئني بجنونه و لذلك هو من الروائيين المفضلين لي 🤍🤍 .

رواية ساخرة وكوميدية وبمنتهى الجدية .
 دماغك عالية يايوسا بجد. انك تقدم فكرة رواية بالشكل ده وكأنها حقيقة واقعية وتنقلنا من محادثات شخصية لتقارير رسمية مكتوبة بجدية وفي نفس الوقت تحمل طابع السخرية ،انك تقدر تضحكني من خلال تقارير عسكرية جادة ، عجبتني يايوسا . وعجبني الجانب الكوميدي الساخر اللى عندك . نقد بشكل مختلف للمؤسسات العسكرية ومايحدث داخلها وكيف يمكنها تغيير طبيعة البشر بجانب الحديث عن الذين يستغلون سذاجة الناس ونشر خرافات ومعتقدات غريبة تحت اسم الدين .

الرواية ببساطة بتتكلم عن بانتاليون اللى تمت ترقيته مؤخرا لانضباطه وفعاليته وتحمله للمسؤولية وبسبب قدرته على التنظيم تم تكليفه  بحل مشكلة الجنود بمنطقة نهر الأمازون، حيث يشتكي أهلها من الاعتداءات والانتهاكات المُتكررة التي يقوم بها المُجندين تجاه نسائها .
فيبدأ "بانتاليون" بإنشاء خدمة الزائرات وبسبب اعتراضات شخصيات من الجيش وكذلك لحماية سمعة الجيش العسكرية يُطلب منه ان يقوم بمهمته بمنتهى السرية وأن لا يذكر انتمائه للجيش وان لايرتدي الزي العسكري . ولأن بانتاليون شخصية عسكرية شديدة التنظيم يأخذ الأوامر بمنتهي الجدية  والحزم ورغم أنه كره الفكرة حين تم عرضها عليه لكنه في النهاية عسكري ملتزم بتأية المهمة التي تم تكليفه بها أيا كانت هذه المهمة . 
فماذا سيفعل بانتاليون وكيف سيؤدي هذه المهمة الغريبة ؟ "كيف يمكن لشخص لم يتصل بزائرات في حياته قط ، ان ينظم جهاز خدمة زائرات ؟

It is a story about the extreme faith, extreme loyalty, extreme devotion, extreme efficiency and extreme industriousness of the main character - Peruvian Army Captain Pantaleón Pantoja who has to carry out an extraordinary task of considerable difficulty and the critical importance for the armed forces. It is a 'bitter sweet' mixture of slapstick comedy (somewhat macabre), absurdity, drama and the language of informal and formal letters, official reports and other official documents.
It is a brilliant and unusual text - there is practically no narration and descriptions - the dialogues are contrasted with all kinds of letters and official reports. There is also a clear contract between the hilariously funny first part of the novel and its second, much darker part. The latter has its silver lining, though, because the officers like Captain Pantaleón Pantoja are needed and are even vital in the armed forces of any country of the world.

En plena profundidad del amazonas peruano, el capitán Pantaleón Pantoja recibe el encargo más peculiar de su carrera. Debe establecer un servicio de "acompañamiento femenino" (prostitución) para las Fuerzas Armadas asentadas en Iquitos. Pero, eso sí, debe ser un programa muy profesional y con absoluto secreto militar.

A partir de ahí, la situación se vuelve divertida y disparatada. El pobre Pantaleón - serio, formal, estricto cumplidor del deber - deberá atender a una patulea de soldados sucios y rudos, a la vez que trata de meter en vereda a un variopinto conjunto de "acompañantes" poco acostumbradas a tanta formalidad. Prepárense para el humor, la sátira y la ironía de la mano de un maestro.

Captain (Quartermaster) Pantaleon Pantoja is a career military man in the Peruvian Army, like his father and his grandfather. He is a model officer, known for his efficiently, logistics, planning and honesty. An officer 'without vices', is how the Intelligence Service have reported him to his superiors. His superiors about to give him a special assignment - a secret one. One in which he will have to remain in disguise, out of uniform, as a civilian.

Deep in the Peruvian Amazon, the men are lacking release. The few women near the military camps are wives of the senior officers, or the wives and mothers of the local people. "Every skirt is spoken for in the Amazon settlements." The soldiers are causing a lot of trouble - attacks and rapes. "Would you believe that a Corporal in Horcones was taken by surprise while carrying on like a newly wed with a monkey?"

Captain Pantoja is to set up a small and discrete brigade of women to service the lonely troops. Along with Captain Pantoja, his wife, and his mother accompany him to the Amazon. Due to the secret nature of his mission, he may not disclose the details of his work.

The first stage, for the SSGFRI (Special Service for Garrisons, Frontier and Related Installations) is research. Research is undertaken by sending a questionnaire to the commanding officer of each garrison, requesting the following information (this is the shortened version):
1. How many unmarried men are under your command? (Exclude married, but also co-habiting men, or men in relationships).
2. Subtract from this number, men incapacitated.
3. Proceed with cunning to now determine the number of marital services each subject will require monthly to satisfy the requirements of his virility. (Maximum 30, minimum 4).
4. Again with discretion, establish how much time the subject calculates the marital service will last in his case. (Maximum 2 hours, minimum 10 minutes.

With this raw data, logistics can be arranged around visitations, and the number of 'specialists' who must be engaged. But this is merely the start of the research...

Not without opposition from within the army (especially the Army Chaplains), Captain Pantoja find himself battling religious zealots, the army itself, the navy, the civilians who are either disgusted, or disgusted that they are missing out, and at times the female 'specialists' themselves.

I thought this book was great. Written really well, and translated very well (I assume). It uses a number of methods in its writing, from 'normal' narrative, military reports, military and civilian correspondence, radio broadcasts, and conversation. Conversation is a key one, because the author has written multiple simultaneous conversations together. Thoroughly confusing until the reader adjusts to the various characters, but ultimately an interesting device. It does mean attention is required to keep track sometimes, and I found myself re-reading the occasional paragraph or two if I lost the train of it all.

Very funny, and incredibly accessible, this book is more than just an absurd story setting out an unlikely situation. The characters are very real, the emotion is real. A strait-laced military man who sets up a brigade of prostitutes, but who gives them respect and the same dignity he would any other branch of the army. He takes very seriously his orders, and the organisation and running of the SSGFRI is second to none. The precision of his report writing is excellent. But of course, it must all come unravelled at the end.

Five stars. Wish I could remember where I saw this recommended!

S.V.G.P.F.A. (Servizio delle Visitatrici per Guarnigioni, Posti di Frontiera e Affini)

Questo autore non finisce di sorprendermi!
Il registro umoristico e a tratti addirittura comico, assente nelle opere più robuste e impegnate che finora ho letto (“La festa del caprone” e “La guerra alla fine del mondo”) ma che traspare in “La zia Julia e lo scribacchino”, qui almeno in apparenza è decisamente dominante.

Si percepisce, e l’eloquente saggio/prologo dell’autore lo conferma, che Vargas Llosa si sia divertito alquanto nella stesura di questo romanzo e tale divertimento è destinato a trasmettersi irresistibilmente al lettore.

Il suo fondamento principale risiede nel contrasto grottesco e quasi surreale fra la prosaicità dell’intento, allestire un rimedio per la soddisfazione sessuale delle frustrate truppe peruviane dislocate in sperdute località e avamposti amazzonici, e il linguaggio “militar-burocratico” che ne presiede l’ideazione, l’organizzazione, il contrasto con le autorità civili, religiose e in parte militari che lo osteggiano, il successo travolgente favorito dall’intraprendenza e dalla caparbietà dell’ufficiale incaricato, l’ineffabile capitano Pantaleon Pantoja.

Ma Vargas Llosa non sarebbe il geniale artista che è se non avesse saputo aggiungere ed amalgamare a questo soggetto molteplici elementi, narrativi e stilistici, che ne arricchiscono la struttura e il senso. Sul piano strutturale i dispacci, le ordinanze, i rapporti e le missive che i vari gradi dell’esercito (ma anche marina e aviazione finiranno con l’essere coinvolti) si scambiano col tipico linguaggio che caratterizza la disciplina militare, vengono alternate come un contrappunto, ad una profusione di dialoghi serrati, a volte addirittura intrecciati fra loro, per cui uno scambio di opinioni fra colonnelli si mescola ad un pettegolezzo fra comari o ad un diverbio coniugale tra Pantita e Pochita (il protagonista e la consorte) creando un “dialogo plurale”, un vociare che è straniante finchè non si prende confidenza col metodo, e poi quasi ritmico e musicale, con una tecnica di cui i narratori latino americani (Manuel Puig in primis) sono maestri.

Quanto al racconto, Vargas Llosa affianca alla vicenda che dà titolo al romanzo la contestuale comparsa di un fenomeno di isteria religiosa collettiva, con la figura del predicatore Francisco (personaggio peraltro realmente esistito e che precorre l’Antonio il Consigliere di “La guerra alla fine del mondo”) e della sua colonia di adepti, i Fratelli dell’Arca, che si diffonde nelle contrade peruviane con un’espansione travolgente e un successo paragonabile e quasi parallelo al “Servizio delle Visitatrici”. “Dopo la pazzia militare, la pazzia religiosa è forse uno dei temi che mi tentano di più” afferma l’autore, sviluppando un doppio crescendo incontrollabile (e l’impossibilità di “controllo” è proprio ciò che innervosisce le gerarchie militari e religiose) fino all’esplosione e al finale, malinconico come in altre opere di Vargas Llosa.

Insomma, quello che in prima battuta può apparire come una sorta di divertissement di un autore alla ricerca della propria dimensione letteraria, si dimostra in realtà carico di una ricchezza di temi e di registri che confermano la statura di uno scrittore generoso, versatile, fantasioso, capace di imprimere ad un racconto audaci acrobazie stilistiche senza rinnegarne affatto la valenza popolare.

La svolta comica di MVL

O meglio: alla sua ricca faretra si aggiunge la freccia del comico diretto.
Secondo me, farà ancora più ridere il successivo La zia Julia e lo scribacchino, ma già questo è molto divertente.
Può sorprendere chi ha letto soltanto i suoi capolavori giovanili, piuttosto tragici, vedere l'esplosione di questa leggerezza di tono. Anche se, a ben vedere, pur declinate in questo modo nuovo, continuano ad essere presenti tutte le componenti dei libri precedenti. Ritornano infatti temi e ambientazioni: l’esercito peruviano (La città e i cani), l’esercito peruviano in Amazzonia (La casa verde), gli anni Cinquanta in Perù ( Conversazione nella Cattedrale ), bordelli e prostitute (La casa verde e Conversazione nella Cattedrale)...
E risplende nuovamente un alto virtuosismo tecnico, forse meno vertiginoso, più amichevole per la lettura ma anche qui ricchissimo; e persino più dilatato: se da una parte si semplificano i dialoghi telescopici, dall'altra si perfeziona la tecnica della didascalia di dialogo inzeppata di materiale. E poi si aggiungono la parodia del rapporto militare, della lettera, o della trasmissione radiofonica pettegola, con tutto il lavoro su formule vivacemente morte del linguaggio burocratico, dello stile obbligatoriamente enfatico, pieno di roboanti, pignole o patriottiche frasi fatte.
(anche questo un anticipo della Zia Julia...)

E non dimentichiamo l'esplorazione: seguendo il protagonista Pantalón Pantoja (Pantita), efficientissimo e integerrimo ufficiale incaricato di provvedere a un servizio di “visitatrici” per l’esercito peruviano in Amazzonia, in modo da stroncare le continue lamentele per donne violentate, bambini illegittimi, matrimoni riparatori; possiamo riprendere il giro del Perù della ditta MVL, facendo tappa stavolta a Iquitos, sul fiume Itaya, capoluogo della regione di Loreto. E quindi nel nord-ovest amazzonico del Perù, verso l’equatore, al confine con la Colombia e il Brasile.





Il bello è che Vargas Llosa è sempre piuttosto cauto su questo punto. Come già in La casa verde. La prima origine di entrambi in romanzi è in un viaggio compiuto nel 1958, prima di andare in Europa, nell’Alto Marañon, con una missione diretta dall’antropologo messicano Juan Comas. La paura è sempre quella di un esotismo interno, di vedere soccombere il romanzo di fronte allo strapotere della natura scatenata, con tutte le leggende che porta con sé. E la principale strada per sfuggire a questo pericolo qui è appunto l'invenzione delle, chiamiamole così, didascalie-ricettacolo.
Il testo evita di calcare la mano su fiume-foresta-indigeni-animali-malattie terribili, ma per evitare l'altro eccesso, di astrattismo, quanto viene espulso dal portone principale fa un po' capolino dalla finestra delle didascalie.

Un paio di esempi:
"Non mi preoccupano i lati negativi del Servizio delle Visitatrici ma quelli positivi, Tigre, - sceglie un tavolo all'aperto, si siede a capotavola, si allenta la cravatta, studia il menu molto attentamente il generale Victoria. - Il grave sono i suoi fantastici successi."

"Sprizza sempre scintille, almeno con me, - esce sul molo, guarda il fiume che luccica sotto il sole omicida, le barche a motore e i canotti che arrivano al porto di Belén il capitano Pantoja. - Sa qual è il motivo delle bizze adesso?"

Aunque el estilo de Vargas Llosa está muy presente en esta obra, la verdad es que el tema y la manera en que lo aborda me sorprendió. El que esta novela esté basada en hechos reales la hace aún más chistosa de lo que es por sí sola.

Vargas Llosa no se ruboriza al exponer los vicios humanos en lo que se refiere al sexo y en más de una ocasión tuve que reírme a pesar de las peladeces que estaba leyendo. Nada nuevo pero sí sorprendente porque viene de la pluma de Varga Llosa (considerando que sólo he leído "La Fiesta del Chivo" y "Conversación en la Catedral").

Me gustó bastante la manera en que Vargas Llosa intercala toda una serie de acciones y sentimientos del personaje mientras éste habla, aún cuando no está haciendo esas cosas (por ejemplo:"-Está bien, mamá- se acuesta al amanecer pero no pega los ojos, se levanta, se ducha, piensa hoy estaré en Lima, no siente alegría Panta--.") Me pareció algo novedoso y original, aunque me costó trabajo acostumbrarme a leerlo.

Por lo demás, toda la novela es un perfecto estudio de la mezquindad y la estupidez humana, envuelta en trámites burocráticos dignos del ejército. Hasta para conseguir putas se necesita seguir el protocolo.

ازاي فكرة كوميدية زي كده تتكتب ف حوالي ٥٠٠ صفحة وبالجمال ده ، يوسا ربط بين اكثر فكرة مجنونة و فكاهية بأكثر منظمة جادية وصارمة ونجح بسهولة مذهلة ، الرواية عبارة عن تقارير ورسائل مليئة بأدق تفاصيل كوميدية ساخرة مكتوبة في قالب عسكري صارم جداً ، رواية ممتعة فكرتها عبقرية و متفردة .

Per coloro che fossero interessati ad approfondire l'opera di Mario Vargas Llosa (e ne vale davvero la pena), questo è un libro davvero importante: si può tranquillamente dire che tutte le opere immense della maturità del grande scrittore di Arequipa, che gli sono valse il Nobel, discendono da questo.
E' pur vero che "La casa verde" e "La città e i cani" sono romanzi importanti che sono venuti prima di questo, ma è solo con "Pantaleòn e le visitatrici" che si intravedono in un tuttuno quei fili rossi che accompagneranno tutta la produzione successiva.

Il potere burocratico e oppressivo delle repubbliche sudamericane si manifesta attraverso una militarizzazione spinta all'estremo, già con "La città ed i cani" l'avevamo capito. Ma quanto questo vada oltre ogni buon senso, fondendosi con un machismo patriarcale e con una versione bigotta e pervertita del Cristianesimo, solo con la irresisistibile comicità venata di sarcasmo di questo libro l'autore è riuscita a renderlo. La satira feroce diventa uno strumento importante per ritrarre le cartografie del potere che hanno reso famoso il grande scrittore di Arequipa.

Sotto questa cappa ossessiva e disumana si muove l'umanità sudamericana, che fa innamorare di sè con una dirompente vitalità che va oltre ogni disciplina ed ogni precetto, risuonando festosa per le strade ed attraverso gli squinternati programmi delle radio locali, ben presentate qui ma celebrate davvero in "La zia Julia e lo scribacchino". E' quella vitalità che strizza l'occhio al sesso ma che pensa molto di più al buon vivere, quella vitalità che mi ha fatto amare i romanzi del ciclo di Piura da "Elogio della matrigna" fino a "I quaderni di Don Rigoberto".

A latere delle peripezie del capitano Pantaleòn e del suo squinternato servizio di "visitatrici" al soldo dell'esercito, si muovono figure spirituali che incarnano quel cristianesimo intriso di paganità caratteristico dell' America del Sud. Questo strambo pericoloso "Fratello Francisco" ricorda l'indimenticabile figura di Antonio il Consigliere, il protagonista di quello che di gran lunga è il più grande romanzo di mario vargas Llosa: "La guerra della fine del mondo", il libro che chi decidesse di leggere solo un suo romanzo dovrebbe scegliere.

In poche righe di commento "Pantaleon e le visitatrici" è riuscito a farmi ricordare tutte le più grandi opere del mio autore preferito: potrebbe essere una sintesi, un punto di arrivo, ed invece è uno splendido e divertentissimo punto di partenza. Si lascia divorare in poche ore, lascia appagati e divertiti ed aiuta davvero molto a capire che cosa si nasconde dentro la penna di uno dei più grandi scrittori del nostro secolo, ma soprattutto sotto gli immensi alberi della foresta, tra le acque del grande fiume-mare, il Rio delle Amazzoni.

Per incredibile che possa sembrare, tentai all'inizio di raccontare questa storia seriamente.
Scopersi che era impossibile, che questa storia richiedeva la beffa e la risata.
Fu un'esperienza liberatoria che mi rivelò - solo allora!- le possibilità del gioco e dell'umorismo in letteratura .
A differenza dei miei libri precedenti, che mi avevano fatto sudare inchiostro, ho scritto questo romanzo con facilità, divertendomi molto.

One of Mario Vargas Llosa's earlier novels, at first it appears to be a light farce, albeit an extremely well written one, but it evolves and develops into something much deeper and more moving.

The story is about the straitlaced logistics officer Captain Pantoja who is assigned to set up mobile brothels in the Amazon to divert the troops from pursuing (and often raping) local women. Captain Pantoja brings his astonishing efficiency to the task, with such steps as surveys about how often men need the services, timing how long it takes, experimenting with factors that can reduce the time, and using all of this to calculate the resources he will need and how to deploy them. All of this grows well beyond his initial imagination as he becomes increasingly embroiled in the world.

The chapters are organized in a number of different ways. The opening and some subsequent chapters are a shifting, multiple perspective dialogue where almost every paragraph is in quotation marks but they narrate a series of conversations, often shifting back and forth, not just one. Some of the other chapters are letters or radio broadcasts And many of the other chapters are in the form of military dispatches, hilarious for the precision and military jargon around prostitution and other aspects of sex. Some is particularly farcical, like the prostitutes creating a "Hymn" for the group, called the "special service," that refers to the Peruvian Army but not the Navy. Given the Navy's support for the operation, they are upset and want themselves named in the "hymn" as well. This leads to a series of letters, apologies, and ultimately the problem being rectified. As such, Captain Pantoja and the Special Service has a comfortable place in the satire of military life from Catch-22 to MASH.

But it ultimately transcends it and does so much more, particularly with the character of Captain Pantoja and how he treats the prostitutes with dignity, creates an esprit de corps like in the Army, and makes them feel patriotic--all of which he does in the face of significant pressure by just about everyone to the contrary.

Also of some interest is that many of Vargas Llosa's subsequent books are in here in some form or another. This is most clear with Brother Francisco, a renegade religious figure who develops a following in the Amazon--prefiguring the Counselor in The War of the End of the World. And Iquitos, the wild Amazonian city, plays a big role here--like it does in The Dream of the Celt. And finally the story itself seems like something Pedro Camacho from Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter would have dreamed up, including a character (the assistant to the madam) who is reminiscent of Camacho himself.

“We’re going to get to the root of this problem and nip it in the bud,” General Victoria strikes his open palm with his fist.

The Peruvian Army has a problem in its jungle outposts on the Amazon river, namely the numerous reports of assaults and rape on the civilian population by soldiers whose passions were inflamed by the tropical climate and who were growing crazy with lust in the remote outposts on the border. The high brass from Administration in Lima got together to brainstorm for a solution.

“Here’s our man,” Colonel Lopez Lopez stands up. “Come in, Pantoja. Congratulations on that new stripe.”
“The highest grade on your promotion exam and by unanimous decision of the judges,” General Victoria stretches out a hand, claps him on the shoulder. “Bravo, Captain. That’s how you serve career and country.”
“Born organizer, mathematical sense of order, executive capacity,” Tiger Collazos reads. “He conducted the administration of the regiment with efficiency and real inspiration.”

The Generals settle on the newly promoted Capt. (Quartermaster) Pantaleon Pantoja, the rising star of the administrative service, and order him to go to Iquitos and organize a relief service for randy soldiers using local talent from the bawdy houses in town. Above all, they stress he must keep the project secret and he must avoid scandals that would reflect badly on the army. Being the conscientious soldier he is, Capt. Pantoja cannot refuse the direct order and sets out for the Amazon River accompanied by his mother and by his young bride Panchita, who are convinced he has become a spy who goes out without his uniform and works mostly at night in bars.

“Convoys are the trips to the barracks?” the Brazilian is astonished, claps her hands, lets out a laugh, winks mischievously, exaggerates. “And services must be ... Oh, how funny!”

And so it begins, the saga of the Special Service for Garrisons, Frontier and Related Installations, known informally around Iquitos as ‘Pantiland’ after the name of its organizer. The author has claimed in interviews that the story is based on facts he researched extensively in the field and, based on the number of times I laughed out loud by myself while reading this, he must have had a lot of fun writing this unusual novel that lampoons military routine and exposes the hypocrisy of society in its rapid condemnation of women who engage in sex for money. Being Llosa, even when writing a farce, he brings his top game to the written page, experimenting with structure (rapid fire dialogue that jumps from one character to the next] and form [local jargon alternates with dry military reporting] . Also being Llosa, no matter how funny the situation may be, he injects a painful reminder of the brutalities other people can inflict on those who, like Pantaleon Pantoja, lay themselves down like a bridge over troubled waters.

From hilarity to despair it is only a short trip, and the laughter from the first half of the novel, describing the successful organization of the SSGFRI, comes back to haunt the reader as the good intentioned captain becomes a victim of his own success. From six ‘specialists’ initially, he quickly becomes the ‘pimp’ of over a hundred women who are sent as ‘visitadoras’ to ‘service’ the remote army outposts by boat or by plane. His success brings not only notoriety in the jungle, but problems at home with his wife, with enraged clergy and with venal radio personalities out for a bribe. Even the army who was supposed to offer him discreet support starts to clamour for extending the service to its officers and even civilian authorities demand their share of the visits. Keeping the SSGFRI secret is no longer an option.

“At least he could have organized the thing in a mediocre, defective way. But that idiot has converted the Special Service into the most efficient unit of the armed forces.”

Captain Pantoja himself goes through personal changes, as his rigid, duty oriented worldview is challenged by the new world that has been thrust upon him by his superiors: He starts to drink, he ‘interviews’ and inspects candidates for the Special Service personally, he becomes himself inflamed to illicit passion by the most beautiful of his ‘specialists’, the one known as the Brazilian. Above all, Pantoja becomes convinced that he is serving his country to the best of his powers by making the Service a success. I saw the second film adaptation years before reading the novel, so I knew what was in store for the Captain and his Special Service, yet the end of the novel still managed to unsettle me and to make me question my readiness for laughter at the issues, questions of respect for women that are as still critical in the world of today as they were in 1956 in Iquitos. I do not consider this novel to be a ‘lesser’ book in the prestigious catalogue of the author.

مراجعة رواية "بانتاليون والزائرات" لماريو بارغاس يوسا، ترجمة: صالح علماني

عن الرواية:
للتحكم في الفوضى ال��نسية بين الجنود في الجيش البيروفي، والمتمثلة في حوادث اغتصاب متكرره ارتكبت في حق نساء مدنيات في منطقة الأمازون، يختار القادة ترقيه النقيب بانتوخا وتعيينه رئيساً لوحدة سرية تهتم بجلب زائرات للجنود للتقليل من جرائم الاغتصاب.

رأيي:

كوميديا سياسية خيالية، لكن على الرغم من ذلك فهي بالغة الواقعية في الاسقاطات السياسية والانتقادات اللاذعة المبطنة تجاه الفاشية العسكرية.

في العالم الذي نسجه يوسا محاكياً للواقع، لا يوجد خطأ أو صواب أو أخلاقيات بالنسبة للقادة، المصلحة العامة هي من تتحكم في كل شيء.

لذلك يتحول رجل عسكري إلى قواد يعمل تحت ظل وإشراف وبموافقة المنظومة العسكرية.
إنه عالم الفاشية إذ يمكن تمرير أي أفعال شيطانية مهما بلغت درجة قذارتها ما دامدت تخدم مصلحة الوطن.

النهاية كانت أكثر من رائعة.

طريقة سرد الأحداث جديدة بالنسبة لي، كانت ممتعة في كثير من الأحيان لكن رغم ذلك
يعيب الرواية أسلوب السرد في بعض الفصول والذي جعلني أعيد قراءة الحوارات مرات عديدة لأعرف من قائلها، كما أن التنقل بين المشاهد والشخصيات بفارق سطر أو سطرين مربك بعض الشيء

أول تجربة لي مع يوسا وبالتأكيد لن تكون الأخيرة. وبشكل عام من أنجح التجارب القرائية لي مع الأدب اللاتيني.

لا أدري كيف تفتق ذهن ماريوس بارغاس يوسا فأبدع هذه القصة المجنونة؟!

أكثر ما يعجبني في يوسا هو تنوع آليات السرد في رواياته ومقدرته الفذة في التلاعب بها .. رسائل شخصية، برقيات عسكرية، تقارير صحفية، برامج إذاعية، خطب تأبين .. ينتقل بينها يوسا برشاقة وحرفنة راسماً لوحات روايته بشكل مبهر جداً. حتى حوارات الرواية المتداخلة المشاهد خرجت بشكل استثنائي جداً وأوجدت إيقاعاً متسارعاً مثيراً يتناسب مع محتوى الرواية ومجرياتها.

رواية تستحق القراءة بكل تأكيد

Vargas Llosa hace un uso magistral del humor y la sátira para poner al descubierto la hipocresía y la mojigatería reinantes en la idiosincrasia latinoamericana. Pero no solo eso, pues aunque este es el tema principal del libro hay una historia paralela que casi nunca se menciona en las reseñas de esta obra: el fanatismo religioso y hasta que extremo puede llegar la gente cuando se deja cegar y arrastrar por sus creencias.

Vargas Llosa makes magnificent use of humour and satire in order to uncover the hypocrisy and prudishness prevailing in Latin American idiosyncrasy. But that's not all; although this is the main subject of the book,there is a simultaneous story which is hardly ever mentioned in the reviews of this work: religious fanaticism and to what extent can people go when blinded and carried away by their beliefs.

Siamo nell'Amazzonia peruviana, nell'alto corso del Rio delle Amazzoni, Fiume eccessivo (viene chiamato il nostro fiume-mare) che scorre in una natura variopinta e torrida.
Gli afrori tropicali inducono nei militari quivi stanziati appetiti sessuali eccessivi che si sfogano in ripetute violenze sulla locale popolazione femminile.
I vertici militari devono porre rimedio alla situazione ed istituiscono ufficiosamente un corpo di prostitute votate alla soddisfazione della foia della truppa.
Per organizzare il tutto incaricano il Capitano Pantaleon Pantoia, militare di terza generazione dotato di dedizione ed obbedienza eccessive. Come eccessiva è l'implacabile pignoleria e determinazione con cui esegue l'incarico ricevuto. Dopo due anni l'organizzazione contempla 40 visitatrici ed una flotta di idrovolanti e battelli che recapitano con la massima puntualità e precisione i servizi richiesti dai "fruitori".
Pantaleon sta sveglio di notte a calcolare entità degli organici, distanza tra un distaccamento e l'altro, frequenza e durata delle prestazioni richieste (con modelli matematici evoluti che tengono conto della settimana di impraticabilità e della percentuale dei potenziali fruitori depurata della quota cui si ascrivono diverse preferenze sessuali) e di giorno smista le visitatrici, verifica il grado di soddisfazione dei "fruitori", assume nuove leve di visitatrici verificandone personalmente l'idoneità al solo scopo di meglio adempiere all'incarico ricevuto, risolve i problemi quotidiani in un tripudio di soddisfazione di tutte le parti in causa. Le visitatrici contente di avere "il posto fisso", la truppa vede i propri appetiti saziati con prestazioni di alto profilo professionale e con un servizio di prim'ordine, a tutto vantaggio del morale e della disciplina.
Una macchina logistica perfetta come una catena di montaggio della Toyota.
Alla vicenda delle visitatrici si interseca quella del profeta visionario Fratel Francisco che fa leva sulla religiosità sanguigna, superstiziosa, eccessiva quasi quanto gli stimoli sessuali dei locali, il tutto a delineare un'umanità capace solo di eccessi a cui fa da contraltare irresistibile l'imperturbabile e metodica efficienza di Pantaleon.

Man mano che procedevo nella lettura seguendo l'irresistibile ed impetuosa ascesa dell'intrapresa di Pantaleon, mi è venuto spontaneo pensare se il tenutario - tra le altre cose - di questo sito, che ha accumulato una fortuna, che mi consentirete di definire eccessiva, recapitando beni e servizi in maniera rapida ed efficiente al domicilio dei fruitori, non si sia ispirato a Pantaleon e non abbia chiamato la sua azienda in omaggio alla terra che ha fatto da sfondo alle sue imprese...

Yüzbaşı hem işinin ehli hem de komutanlarının umududur. Yüzbaşının verdiği birifinkten bir örnek: “Bakın, Generalim: tahmini yüzde 22'1ik bir büyümeyle, harekat hacmini yüzde 60 oranında dinamik­leştireceğiz, haftada beş yüz servisten sekiz yüze çıkacağız”. Bu sözlerden de anlaşılacağı üzere görev sert ve çetin.
Peru’lu yazar Vargas Llosa’nın ilk romanlarından bii, baştan aşağı kara mizah, ama sertçe yapılmış. Orduyla, ordu yönetim kademesiyle, askerlik mantığıyla kıyadıya kafa buluyor. Bundan önceki romanları içinde en hafif olanı ama etkileyici yine de. Okurken gülmemek mümkün değil. Ama çok fazla da birşey beklemeden.

اسلوب جديد وممتع فى السرد ..ما بين جدية التقارير العسكرية وفكاهة .الأراء والمواقف،يكمن نقد وسخرية يوسا من المؤسسة العسكرية
ممتعة جدا جدا.
بعد قراءات كثيرة ومتعددة للأدب اللاتينى لكتاب البلدان الناطقة بالاسبانية صراحة احب اشكر صالح علمانى على متعة الترجمة ..الترجمة بضمير واحترافية اديب وليس مترجم.

Incluso para estar escrita en los 70, esta novela acumula una cantidad de insensibilidades y agresiones hacia grupos desprotegidos bastante llamativa: los chistes sobre violaciones que abren el libro, los tópicos sobre putas, la burla al habla de los chinos inmigrantes, el topicón sobre la muerta guapa, los estereotipos de la puta (la Brasileña), la santa (la esposa), la madre (Leonor mamita) y la bruja (Leonor la madama)...
El libro denuncia con brutalidad e inteligencia los abusos de poder pero, al mismo tiempo, no consigue empatizar de verdad con los reprimidos. Claro que es humor y chiste, pero el humor a costa de los oprimidos duele.
De todos modos, y aun partiendo de todos los prejuicios que tengo contra Vargas Llosa, no puedo evitarlo: la novela es un prodigio literario, de esas obras que VL escribía por entonces, cuando en dos días y sin aparente esfuerzo paría una genialidad que de pronto parece hacer el castellano una lengua más flexible.
