This special holiday book is filled with * A visit from St. Nicholas * The Elves and the Shoemaker * The Tree That Trimmed Itself * The Littles' Christmas * The Cat in the Manger
While the book did include a few of the tried-and-true, ubiquitous Christmas tales that tend to overpopulate collections of this type, many of the featured stories were ones I'd never heard before, a fact that I appreciated. I enjoy discovering new Christmas favorites, since I can only reread the same selection of canon texts that have become the norm for the holidays so many times before growing bored. It's difficult to find new angles to enjoy something like Clement Clarke Moore's 'A Visit From St. Nicholas', when popular culture has immersed me in the poem since childhood. My favorite tale in this collection was probably 'The Cat In The Manger'. However, the book was a decent compilation overall. Did I like it? Yes. Would I reread it? Not cover-to-cover, but I can see myself revisiting individual stories. Would I recommend it? For readers wanting something a little fresher than the same old Christmas fare, yes.
This small book contains a nice collection of Christmas stories a variety of sources. There are a couple of classic fairy tales, one of JRR Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters, a bit from John Peterson's The Littles (you might remember the Saturday morning cartoon based on this series), and the classic "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore.
While I was familiar with some of the stories and poems/songs here, my favorite was one I'd not read previously, Apple Tree Christmas by Trinka Hakes Noble, which had a very similar vibe to the works of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Nice collection and a good set of quick read-aloud stories for bedtime around the holidays.
Although I am not Christian I enjoyed this mostly secular book of short stories and poems. It's funny because my favorite story was about a cat and I think it was the only one in the book that mentioned Jesus.
I think this is a great book for kids and especially if parents and the kids read it together around the holidays.
An excellent read aloud to or by lower elementary students. Some of my favorites include: J.R.R. Tolkien's Letter from Father Christmas, Moore's A Night Before Christmas, and the Great Walled City adaptation. ALSO: includes the elves and the shoemaker folktale and Legend of Old Befana.
