Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.
Emmet Fox was a New Thought spiritual leader of the early 20th century, famous for his large Divine Science church services held in New York City during the Depression.
This author's thoughts on the Lord's Prayer, and various key chapters in Psalms are very, very good. However, his ideas about life after death and reincarnation are unconventional. I also disagree when he says we have power over sickness and other misfortunes if only we change our thinking. But what of those who do not get well? Should they feel guilty about having failed to learn proper thinking and prayer?
Prayer means thinking about God. If you are thinking about yourself, or your troubles, or about somebody else, you are not at that moment praying. This is what Emmet Fox has taught me. I love that part in his book: But how is this magic act of forgiveness to be performed? What is the specific treatment for guilt that causes such violence to the physical makeup? Only one thing is essential to its accomplishment, he says. "Will-ingness" to forgive. The method set down briefly is as follow~: 1. Get by yourself and become quiet. 2. Repeat any prayer that appeals to you or read a chapter from the Bible. 3. Then say quietly: I fully and freely forgive---, I loose him and let him go. I completely forgive the whole business in question. As far as I am concerned, it is finished forever. I cast the burden of resentment upon Christ within me. He is free now and I am free too. I wish him well in every phase of his life. That incident is finished. The Christ Truth has set us both free. I thank God. 4. Then get up and go about your business. On no account repeat this act of forgiveness because you have done it once and for all, and to do it a second time would be tacitly to repudiate your own work. "Whenever the memory of the offender or the offense happens to come into your mind, bless the delinquent briefly and dismiss the thought. Do this, however many times the thought may come back. After a few days it will return less and less often, until you forget ·it altogether. Then, per- haps after an interval, shorter or longer, the old trouble may come back to memory once more, but you will find that now all bitterness and resentment have disappeared, and you are both free with the perfect freedom of the children of God....
This book makes sense of much of the archaic language of the King James version of the Holy Bible and translates it into actionable steps. While this is Christian focused, the principles of the New Thought Movement for practical application in our lives comes through loud and clear. Those who can read this with an open mind will find they are able to use the techniques for building a better life with skill and ease.
No empty wishes or promises, just real world discussion of how to apply the truths of life. A fantastic book for meditation on the spirituals laws of life. Will change your life if you use as a guide.
I just discovered Emmet Fox and I am a big fan. Words of wisdom to live by! I cannot wait to read this book again slowly and to savor all the amazing nuggets.
Interesting thoughts and application of religious Teachings. While I don't necessarily subscribe to everything this book states I did enjoy its overall message
My bookshelves are becoming populated with metaphysical books. I thought “New Age” thinking was really new—like maybe since I started reading about it in the 1990’s. Not so. Emmet Fox published Power Through Constructive Thinking in 1940 and is touted as one the greatest spiritual leaders of the century. And metaphysics itself goes back centuries.
This is yet another book about the power of positive thinking (along with positive action). Fox tells us that our limitations or weakness are of no account. “You are only the channel through which the Divine action takes place, and your treatment will really be just the getting of yourself out of the way.” (p 133)
As he did with The Sermon on the Mount, Fox explains Biblical teachings in terms of original language and explanation of metaphor.
Power Through Constructive Thinking is a more compelling read than The Sermon on the Mount.
Many years have passed since the author shared these truths in his generation. They are still relevant today for those who are still seeking spiritual insights that can add to the depths of their own experiences of faith. Actually, this is what the book is all about "faith." Whether one agrees with .every area of thought he touches upon, or of the way he categorizes his concepts. When he focuses upon the essence of his primary emphasis in each chapter he takes you back to a scriptural reference and solidly plants his feet on the instructions of that particular verse. One thing the thoughtful reader can perceive about Emmett Fox as he reads this book is that the man was full of faith. Read it, don't try to dissect it according to your religious background or denomination, just be open to the spiritual knowledge in the use of faith that he has shared.
I met a lot of interesting people when I was a reporter. It's one of the few things I miss about the profession. One of the most interesting was a woman I met on Weir Farm. She mentioned this book (and maybe gave it to me; I can't remember) and I'd put it aside and stumbled upon it this summer and it seemed just right for me at the time. It was. Essentially a series of essays about thinking and prayer, I liked what Emmett Fox says about the power we have to control our own thinking and how that does change the way we go about life. I'd recommend to anyone interested in their own spiritual path. Although the part about reincarnation was strange - as Fox said it would be for those of us in the West.
This is a terrific book for anyone looking for Spiritual Enlightenment and wants to better their lives through a closeness to God. The book "The Secret" was good in that it allowed people to be aware that there is a way of improving our lives by thinking differently. Unfortunately, it really did not teach people "how" to make their lives better or the ways to attract health, prosperity and happiness. This book is a very straight forward teaching tool but is also deep enough to give the reader and understanding on how our relationship to our Source makes all the difference.
This is a collection of pamphlets the Emmet Fox wrote. The first third of the book is analysis of several Psalms. The second third is the way to pray and meditate, and the last third is a description of reincarnation. I found the first two-thirds very interesting and the last third pretty far out there.
Although this book contains some essays and writings found in other books, it was well worth the read and reread. He is my spiritual compass, and I cannot read enough of his ideas and interpretations. His explanations of the Bible and its teachings will leave the reader in awe.
so far so good. Not just a think positive and all will be great book. rather a deeply spiritual read. OK so the last third of the book is hinky. Still would recommend. it.
Currently looking for this book. Two very special friends have recommended this too me, and believe this book will enlighten me, and encourage me. So hope to find it.
A preciously enthusiastic Depression-era pep talk, really a collection of essays mystically interpreting Christian principles. The one on Life After Death is the only one I struggled to get through.
