The Seven Circles of Hell #1

Confronting Confluences

Rate this book
Events are marks of God’s superiority. Taking responsibility for them makes wise men extraordinary. Our inabilities to read the prints of time have gotten us overwhelmed in unnecessary uncertainty. The prints of time are excellent pathways that portray guidance, goodness, and glory. Our dispensation is at a prime of prophetic culmination, where each achievement or failure leads to permanence. It is worthy to draw out of God’s word the truth on conquest which is older than this age and would remain eternally. These truths are necessary to enhance our productivity and performance in life’s pursuit. Over time I understood the potency of scriptures as the solid foundation for stability, security and sanity. Knowing that some conditions and challenges are conquered by utilizing scriptural truths. Out of many scriptural truths, we would consider 2Tim 1:7 to base our investigation on confronting confluences. For God has not given us the Spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and a sound mind. 2Tim. 1:7 The truth found in this scripture spread its relevance across careers, cultures, convictions, and contents. I likened it to a tree that produces fruit each month. Acknowledging and adopting them would herald solace for today and the journey of destiny. Fear, Power, Love, and Sound mind are the component that relates to all aspects of life; adequate handling of them is a stepping stone to greatness. As you read through this work, I believe you will find the strength to run the course of destiny without wavering. If you will, with an open heart receive grace from this work; a domineering sense would be stirred in you to diligently utilize these truths as proven armories to confronting all confluences.

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank Ciara Ballintyne, author of Confronting the Demon for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading and reviewing this awesome book.

I was really amazed by this book. It's so great and totally a different concept than the love stricken star crossed lovers and their journey which nowadays plague all most all the books in different genres, don't worry this story has a pure love story with the essence of true love but let me assure you that it's not cheesy and the story has so much more in it that the love scenes are a part of it and not the whole of it.

'An unusual take on the fantasy genre' - this will describe this book quite a lot and I was mesmerized by Alloran and I bet that you guys will adore him too.

Here the author describes the two facets of Alloran's personality. On one hand he is powerful, strong, deadly, confident and ready to take on a battle at any time and on the other hand we get to experience his softer side which cares for his loved ones and live in the fear of getting themselves hurt all because of him. We get to see the helplessness of him when his friends and loved ones are killed and his desperation of saving the woman he loves.

The writing style of the author is really remarkable and I got truly impressed by it. Being a female she brought out the male point of view in this book so efficiently capturing every emotions, every mood swings within her words. Hats off to the author, literally! The story revolved in front of my eyes like a movie and I was able to visualize each and every scene vividly, all thanks to the descriptive and skilled writing of the author.

The power-packed action will leave you breathless and the eerie suspense will make you chomp on your own nails, beware! The mystery is thick and pulsing and will seep into your nerves making you anxious for the upcoming events. The evil beings and Ladanyon are dark and pure evil and the description of them and their deeds really spooked me.

The love interest of Alloran is really remarkable presented to the readers and she has every quality that a strong woman should have but the author cleverly balanced it with negatives so that she can be taken as natural as possible rather than making her all perfect and totally fictional.

All in all a great and must read for ya all and hope that you guys will enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks again for the honor that the author presented me with by giving me the chance of reviewing her fabulous, extraordinary and totally remarkable work.

This story wasn’t quite what I expected; it was better! The first pages surprised me, reminding strongly of THE WAY OF SHADOWS by Brent Weeks (the scenes, setting and story feel). I was immediately drawn in and found myself having to concentrate not to miss a beat in the quickly developing plot.

The world built here is intricate and complex. It has the feeling of a full-fledged novel concentrated as tight as possible into a novella. A little voice in the back of my head wished (during the first few sections) the background would have been fleshed out into part of the story. There was so much to dive into and part of me felt a little cheated not having the opportunity to join the scenes leading up to the rest. I loved Alloran right away and would have gladly shared his journey from earlier on.

The pace greatly slows down when Alloran’s past girlfriend shows up. Like Alloran she’s a likable character – spunky, beautiful and has enough flaws to make her realistic and enjoyable. Although there is definitely a romance going on here, it blends into the rest of the story well and doesn’t overpower the plot. The action and tension remain strong the whole way through, which kept me turning the pages. Yep, I read this in one sitting with my hubs wanting to know when I’d finally be done – but I couldn’t leave Alloran. Nope.

I really enjoyed reading this and will read it again and maybe again. There were a few spots where things suddenly jumped, which I had to read again to keep up – and this especially clashed with the one or two moments where Alloran sulked a little too long (the pace could use a little smoothing out), but I still hope Ciara builds this out into a novel someday because I love the world and all the mysteries behind Alloran. This felt like a sweet, tantalizing sample of an amazing meal.

I came across the author Ciara Ballintyne as I was searching on Goodreads for another author. What did I notice about her first.... that she was Australian. Yes I am that kind of dork. It made me go O.o hell yes! I blame my fiance for that because... just she's an Aussie so I fan girl at that fact. But the title of this novella did catch my attention as well. I mean it has Demon in the title. Demons interest me; for that I happily blame Kim Harrison and the Hollows Series... but I digress.

Before I go to far, I must thank Ciara for sending me and e-arc of this novella in return for an honest review.

This is a fantasy. It's kind of sci-fi'ish to me with a kick of paranormal. I like Paranormal. After I got past the first few pages of the novella it seemed I was lost. So I reread what I had read and lordy be I was still confused. It felt like I had missed something. So I read it a third time. Still confused; that happens sometimes. I have learned, with the help of Emmy and her patience of a God, to not just dismiss a book until at least three or four chapters in. That makes sense. But even with that I was confused and a little lost. So I tried again. I kept pushing on and I finally made it a little further through the novella.

It's written well. There are a few 'big' words in there that I literally had to look up. I was like.. what? and yeah that is all me. I'm dyslexic (believe it or not) so sometimes I look and see one thing but it's saying something else. And I hate to give bad reviews, say negative things about someones hard work. Their blood, sweat and tears but I just couldn't get into this novella. I sat it aside and came back in between others.

When I got about half way through things started to pick up and kind of click together (for me). The story is one of misunderstandings and bad timing. Very bad timing... like EPIC fail in timing.

We have Alleron, the sorcerer in hiding; Gisdayne, the high sorcerer's daughter and Ladanyon. All of them are powerful. This story shows you that no matter how much you know someone they can turn on you like a rabid dog. Alleron is hiding in plain sight, as with most people he are trying to prove they are innocent when they know who is behind the bad shit. Come to find out Ladanyon is jealous of Alleron. Why you ask? Because Alleron is a better sorcerer than he is. So his poor little wizard ego is crushed and he is having a tantrum to get into the high class. Which in my opinion, is so like a man. His balls are bigger than mine so I will open the gates of hell.. yeah that's a great idea!(shakes my head) Men. I swear.

Once the plan is unfolding in Alleron's mind Gisdayne tracks him down together they discover the workings of Ladanyon's misdeeds and put in a plan of action to stop him. But wouldn't ya know, Alleron wants to be a hero, save her from pain and heartache by letting the demon take him. But as a badass chick as herself does she takes matters into her own hands. They make it to the square before the heavens open to hell. THe demon (who reminds me of an epically pissed off octopus starts cause chaos. Tearing up the square, smashing buildings and it takes them some time and pain but Alleron is able to close to the hell gates with Landyon on the right side. Let him rot where he plays.

Now... we wait to see what the next tale of the demons shows us...

When a powerful wizard discovers his best friend has betrayed him out of jealousy, he is forced to perform dark magic or lose everyone he has ever cared about as the gates of hell are opened and the world is in danger. When past loves are being brutally and methodically murdered by demons brought forth with the help of his stolen tome of spells, Alloran must overcome his reticence to believe what is before his very eyes to save the woman he truly loves. Will he be strong enough? Will he be in time? Is he willing to pay the price that will be asked of him?

Confronting the Demon by Ciara Ballintyne magically packs action, intrigue, love and fear into a very short, but intense and dark read! Her writing is crisp, she gets to the point and creates scenes that rolled past my “mental screen” in vivid detail. The conflict has that “sinister-dark” feel, but the romance balances that out with moments of lightness and even humor! A lot of story for those “not a lot of time, but I want to read” times!

In a special bonus short story, A Magical Melody, the sheet music to a magically enhanced piece is missing on the night it was to played in concert. Avram, the composer may have been deceived by a beautiful woman in a moment of passion. Will his weakness bring down another ice age on the world?

The banter (and mental dialogue) between the two main characters has a touch of humor and snark that was entertaining as they attempt to head off a possible disaster.

*I received this book from the author via The Finishing Fairies in exchange for an Honest Review*

This had to be the most engaging story I've read this month. The description was alive and the characters vibrant. The storyline had a pulse to it. The reader truly is whisked away into Alloran's world for the brief time it takes to read the story.
Alloran's story is heartbreaking. Accused of horrendous crimes he didn't committed, running for his very life while those he knows and love die all around him by another's hand.
I found not a single error in this work. My only disappointment was the length. The story ended far too soon. I hope this author considers returning to Alloran's world one day so I can join the wizard on more adventures.

A Magical Melody is a bonus piece of Flash Fiction that starts after Confronting the Demon ends. It's an interesting piece about love, trust, regret, and the power of two magic anointed pieces of sheet music. The story is almost sad with how the emotions come off main character. I really liked the concept of magic through music. It's not something I've read before and I hope the author will consider writing another story with Avram.

This author has definitely gotten my attention. I look forward to seeing what else she comes out with.

I give this book 5 of 5 Paws

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This high fantasy novella was well written, and it is easy to see that the author put a lot of care in the wording of the sentences. However, sometimes the feeling I got as a reader is that she was trying too hard to make her words sound like high fantasy. We don't need to pack the pages with lots of difficult and old-fashioned words to make the reader know that the book belongs to the fantasy genre. Do those old-fashioned words have to appear? Yes, but in a balanced way. The good thing is that her prose doesn't get to the extreme of being purple prose, as I have found in other fantasy books, unfortunately. Indeed, Ciara Ballintyne's storytelling is quite good.

My problem while reading this book was that the story pace seemed to be very slow at the beginning, and then the end appeared all of a sudden in a blur of action and fight and monsters and demons. The hero was quite passive, leaving all the action to the female character (but I like that; not that the hero is passive, but that the female character is strong). And the story was kind of predictable; I knew what it was going to happen before it happened because there were hints. Intentional? I don't know, but I don't like knowing beforehand what is going to happen next.

Apart from that, it's an enjoyable book that could have been even better if it had been a bit longer, to allow more development of certain parts of the story.

I admit to being a paranormal junkie, so I jumped at the chance to read this short novel when offered an ARC. I'm not usually a short novel person as they rarely leave me satisfied, burning with a bunch of unanswered questions.

This book was not that kind of short novel.

Author Ciara Ballintyne's writing paints a world and characters so vivid that I could picture the streets and alleys, practically smelling the rank, sweet yet foul rotting smell of the body Alloran discovers. The pace is phenomenal not only because it is fast and keeps the plot moving forward but because there is such a wealth of information in so few words! I could've read more and more for hours and hours, but Ballintyne wraps it all up in one suspenseful, tidy package. There's repressed emotions, a man on the run, magic, demons, a frenemy who has become sinister and malicious, and a sweet budding romance. I was rather amazed at the intricacies of the plot and background information given in such a short novel. There's room for so much more without making you feel as if you're missing a thing; you just want to unfurl THAT CORNER OVER THERE that was mentioned and explore there.

So, did Alloran save himself? Did he save the day? Did his former best friend triumph? ;) You gotta read to find out!

Confronting the Demon
By Ciara Ballintyne

Alloran, a man of mystery, a sorcerer, a controller of demons, and hunted for his life. With such a man you would think he would run and never look back but Alloran is also a man of honor. When it is found out he practices the dark arts and seeks to control demons deaths occur. He runs for his life and hides within plain sight until the messages start. The delivery of bodies of those he was close to opens up his visibility and vulnerability and he finds himself almost a captive until he is helped by the one he loves. Will she be able to help him uncover the plot to destroy him and the world of magic? You will have to read this exciting tale and find out.
Ballintyne gives wonderful descriptions and I found myself becoming lost in the magic of her words in a picturesque world with every turned page. From the hellcats to the creature like Legion the demonic is called forth by his enemy to destroy Alloran and his beloved. Read to see if he can truly control the demon realm and find out who has the strongest magic and what price has to be paid.
This is a tale I will read again. Join Alloran in Confronting the Demon.

Alloran is wrongly accused of a terrible crime and being stalked by a former friend who has been driven insane through the use of dark magic and influenced by jealousy. Can Alloran clear his name, save the woman he loves and keep the city safe? (You'll have to read the book to find out!)

I absolutely loved the book. It is in my favorite genre and the pace is quick. You learn enough about Alloran from the very first page to start rooting for him, and, as the bodies start turning up, the suspense heats up along with them.

My only complaint is that it's too short! I read it in about an hour (I'm a fairly fast reader though), and I was sad when it ended because I didn't want to leave the world Ciara Ballintyne had created. I will definitely be reading any other books written by her in the future!

I read the kindle version and enjoyed the story and the writing. I do know Ciara so this is not a formal review. . . more of a happy turn of events being able to recommend the book. I don't read many fantasy novels (except for some of the big icons in the field like The Lord of the Rings, most of The Wheel of Time series) so this novella was a delight because it beat every expectation . . . If you like fantasy, you'll enjoy this short novella. It has some gruesome descriptions of the remains left after hellcats and bad wizards happen to good people and a suspenseful set-up with bold confrontations; the characters are interesting (need more tales in this world) and the narrative kept me reading to the end in one sitting.

Alloran is a wizard on the run. Because of his dark past, when murders start occurring around town, he's the first they blame. Too bad the killer is actually an old friend of Alloran's who has gotten corrupted by dark magic. When he runs into an old flame that is a sword sorceress, chaos and a little heat ensue.

I'm not usually much of an epic fantasy reader, but this one kept me gripped. While it is a short read, you will find yourself completely engrossed until you finish it. Team Alloran all the way!

Magic, love and jealousy

An exceptional wizard who made a mistake. A friend who
takes his place as a wizard who explores new magic. A beautiful woman. This story takes passion and friendship among wizards and weaves a fast paced tale of magic. Well written, fast paced. A different take on traditional magic. An enjoyable read.

The writing in this is really good, the magic system interesting but I had a hard time connecting to the characters and plot. The detail within the very beautiful writing sometimes bogged down the action, meaning an initial scene with a body became a swath of while very good writing, still ties down too much the character arc, and then makes the dialogue a little stilted.

I really enjoyed Confronting the Demon by Ciara Ballintyne. Ballintyne is a masterful storyteller who manages to get you caught up in the book almost instantaneously. Her beleaguered hero, Alloran, is a wizard who has been accused of the heinous crime of calling forth a demon that killed many wizards and sorceresses before it disappeared. Alloran didn’t commit the crime, but he is the natural suspect because quite a long time ago he brought forth a demon while experimenting, that killed his lab assistant. After that, he was forbidden from continuing his research into the demon world. A quest he willingly abandoned, because he was ridden with guilt over the death in his lab. But now someone else has mastered the ability to call forth demons and Alloran has been blamed for it, as the culprit knew he would be.

On the run, Alloran is unable to flee the city as guards accompanied by wizards and sorceresses man the gates from the city watching for him. Changing his appearance as much as possible he hides out in the city, altering his appearance and working as an apprentice. However, the real force behind the demons is stalking him, killing people he knows or has loved and leaving them ever nearer to the place where he is hiding in the backstreets. Eventually forcing him into even deeper hiding where he must reopen his research if he stands a chance of doing away with the real killer and making the city safe once and for all.

This fantasy book was short and moved quickly, but fit an entire fantasy read into its pages. I actually enjoyed a good fantasy novel that didn’t take days and days to read, but still offered the opportunity to get caught up in its world and story.

This book was full or suspense and twists and turns. I really liked the combination of a rich fantasy world and Alloran’s fight to clear his name that started the story, but became a battle for justice and the safety of the city by the end of the story. I loved some of the unusual, at times macabre twists that Ballintyne brought into the story. I would like to see more stories involving Alloran in this fantasy world as I think it has great potential and who knows what demons still remain roving the city, or whether a breach has been opened between the demon plane and the plane of their world, despite their efforts to completely close it in the end. Also, who knows what real damage the real killer is able to inflict from the other side, in the demon plane, if he survived.

I recommend this book to readers of fantasy, lovers of magic, and paranormal romance fans. I think it has a lot to offer to readers in these genres, even if Ballintyne never writes another book set in this world.

Confronting the Demon is an impressive debut fantasy novella that feels as though it’s part of a larger body of work. It was short but action-packed, and the short story “A Magical Melody” included at the end was a fun bonus. And this from a cynical grump who doesn’t usually like bonus material.

I loved the thoroughness of the world building. The summoned demons, the opulent citadel, and the fleshed out sorcery hinted at more going on beyond the pages of the story. I enjoyed the twists and turns of Alloran and Gisayne’s relationship with one another and the antagonist Ladanyon. So much was skittering under the surface that it made the character interactions real.

The descriptions of demons were fascinating, but you would expect that from someone who has a Pinterest page called Demons and Darkness. The demons in this book come from different levels of hell, each one increasing in power as the numbers decrease. The hellcats from the seventh level of hell are the weakest–but their claws still sting like needles. And the first-level demon fought in the climax, with tentacles tearing apart the city, made me want to scream, “RELEASE THE KRAKEN.”

It doesn’t take much for me to yell that, though. If I had a catch phrase, that might be it.

One of the best complaints an author can receive is that their work is too short, and this is one of the few drawbacks I can muster about this book. It feels like an extended short story, so it lacks sub-plots that one would normally expect in a full novel. (I don’t read a lot of novellas, but I assume this is usual.) I wanted to meet Alloran, Ladanyon, and Gisayne’s peers, pull back the curtain into their lives, and delve into their back stories.

Confronting the Demon is a quick, engrossing read, and I recommend fantasy fans to both buy it and keep an eye on Ms. Ballintyne. I can’t wait to see what else she has in store. I liked this novella so much I asked her to write a post for my blog Magic & Mayhem Book Reviews, so go check out her review of The Last Hero by Terry Pratchett from Friday.

You know what I appreciate about Confronting the Demon almost more than anything else? That it is geared toward a mature adult reader. It seems like everything coming out these days in the fantasy genre are YA and well…that is just not my thing so I don’t read them…usually. Sorry (not really). This novella by Ciara Ballintyne had me moving and shaking from page 1 and I was saddened when I had to put it down while reading it so could deal with finals at GVSU.

World building from scratch, especially good world building takes time. It takes careful and thoughtful consideration and Ciara did an amazing job. I found myself wanting to know about this world, its lands, the city and the mysteries of the shadowy Citadel. Despite the short length of this novella (110 pages) I felt like Ciara did an amazing job of writing the characters especially the wizard Alloran and the very spirited Gisayne. One thing that is important to me as a reader and a writer is feeling like I know who the characters are, their emotions and what makes them tick. As I got farther along with Confronting the Demon I found myself excited to learn more about them. I loved the movement!

I think, my favorite part in this whole novella is where the tentacle demon is coming through the Hell Gate after being summoned by Allorans traitorous old friend. Action can be hard to write and even harder to write well. I applaud Ciara Ballintyne on her ability to weave the action in with intriguing and well written dialogue. For someone who is usually not a reader of high fantasy I now find myself jazzed as hell to read what comes next from this wonderful and exciting new author and this story. This is definitely a quick great read that is worth picking up and worthy of your time.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My rating is 4.5 stars.

I have to admit, the story pulled me in from the very beginning. The writing was vivid with rich vocabulary and fun dialogue. Alloran undercover as a sculptor faking an accent was brilliant.

Both main characters were interesting and had distinct voices and quirks. I really liked the pace and how the bits of the back story for each of the major characters were delivered. There's a little bit of romance in there but nothing too explicit, though in a few scenes it did feel like the book might go that way.

The ending had a twist to it which I always like in books. The battle scene did get a bit hectic though. It was pretty clear what the main characters were doing but it would have been nice to get more details on all the other people around them.

The book was a quick, engaging read - pretty much finished it in one sitting. I really wanted to know what drove the villain. Unfortunately, for me that that was the one aspect where I felt a bit let down. Hence the 0.5 star less. It could be the length of the story but I didn't feel like the reasons for Ladanyon's behaviour justified the level of violence. I can sort of see how it could develop, but that could have used more details.

Strangely enough, while Confronting the Demon grabbed me from the first paragraph, the free short story at the end didn't. I guess stolen music sheets aren't my thing ;)

SYNPOSIS
The gates to hell are thrown wide when Alloran is betrayed by his best friend, Ladanyon, and framed for forbidden magic. He is hunted by the guards and the wizards both, tormented by the gruesome murder of his friends and loved ones, and crippled by fear for the living. Now Alloran must face his demons, or damn the woman he loves.

WHAT WORKS
Lots. Worldbuilding is handled perfectly giving the reader a sense of a complex, well-thought-out world. Confronting the Demon creates a world that is instantly familiar but completely unique. The magic system described simply through observations and actions rather than rambling exposition. There is just enough mystery and tension to pull the reader forward making it very difficult to stop reading at one point in the story.

The romance never devolves into cheesiness, nor does it overshadow the classic epic fantasy elements that would make Robert E. Howard happy. Dialogue and character development are handled well. Pacing it tight making this a quick, enjoyable read.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK
I'm not a fan of the cover. If I saw it on the shelf, I would assume it was a Harlequin Romance and not pick it up. Thankfully, I agreed to read it based on the story line. If you can get past the cover, there is a great story here that will appeal to fantasy readers.

CONCLUSION
If you like your fantasy filled with sorcery, demons, and a touch of romance, I strongly recommend Confronting the Demon by Ciara Ballintyne.

This is my first time reading reading a book by this author, I Will be reading more. Alloran used to live very comfortably inside the Citadel, a place where wizards, sorcerers and other magical entities lived. He's forced to live in the dirtiest place down by the docks because his best friend turned demon and brought a demon into the citadel. Because Alloran made a huge mistake and summoned the first demon imp, they thought it was he who brought this one who killed inside the citadel. Alloran left the citadel to keep the demon from killing anyone one else especially Gisayne one of the top wizards daughter who Alloran had deep feelings for. His friend Ladanyon is trying to best him in wizardry because of the demon in him, he's killing all who has anything to do with Alloran, lovers from his past, friends, other wizards. Every demon that's summoned is stronger than the last. Hellcats from centuries back that tear you apart from your insides out to imps that are hard to kill. Alloran must stop them all. Will he be able and willing to go back to that scary part of his life and kill his best friend Ladanyon to save his friends. Download your copy now and find out. This author doesn't disappoint. It's not my kind of book in many ways. It's dripping with magic. Frankly, that turned me off at first. I for one don't write magic often because I find it too easy to toss in a new rule for no reason, and blame magic. But then, I appear to do the same thing with nanites through the Lifehack books. I justify it by means of plausibility, blah blah...

But y'know what, Joe? Suck it up, keep reading.. I had myself convinced that I didn't like it at first. I forced myself onward. Aaaand, the world started to grow on me. And then I met the female lead. And I hated her for a page or so. And then she started to grow on me.

And then she was solo for a bit, and there was a bit of a dungeon crawl... tip I didn't know- Hellcats? Strong vs slashing, weak to bludgeoning. Well, that did it. A dungeon crawl wins a lot of points in this grizzled GM's heart. A calm before the storm had me wanting another dungeon crawl, but then the storm came.

People complain about Vancouver weather, but dayum, I never had THAT coming out of the sky. I won't tell you what, I wouldn't want to spoil it. If .... no.. that would be a spoiler.

So.. as a magic non-lover, I was pretty OK with this novella, but I suspect that those more attune to tales of wizardry can find quite a blast while.... (dramatic pause as the orchestra swells...)

I have to first say that this is a bit out of my normal reading genre, but I found it very easy to read. There were moments where I felt the author could have cut some things out. In general, the author's attention to detail was admirable. I liked the romantic element between Alloran and Gisayne. Being that my preference is romance, I would have liked it to be more defined, but that's my hang-up and is no fault of the author.
Overall, I was glad for the escape into Ballintyne's well-detailed world. Following Alloran as he tries to stop his one-time best friend from destroying all that matters to him was a nice change of pace for me. I found myself feeling sorry for Ladanyon, not that he deserved it. My feelings were based more on the aspect of what Ladanyon was willing too destroy over a perceived wrongdoings by Gisayne and Alloran. So without giving anything more away: read it! Fall into a world of magic and intrigue, jealousy and all the things one does for love.
My rating is based on the moments where the pacing slowed down too much in my opinion.
*I received this book as an ARC and I have to say that part of the experience was less painful than I thought it would be. Ms. Ballintyne was very on the ball with the way she set up her review process.*

I was given an ARC of the Kindle version in exchange for an honest review. I have to admit that paranormal and fantasy are genres I enjoy reading, so I was happy to review Ciara Ballintyne's book. I do not post reviews of books that I find poorly written, but that was not an issue with this story. I just wish it was a longer novel.I enjoyed the short story at the end of the book too, but again, I wish it had been longer.

Here is my honest review in exchange for the ARC I received from the author.

Based on writing prose, I would give it 3.5-4 Stars but storyline is more of a 3. Alloran is a Sorcerer on the run, accused of summoning a demon from the Circles of Hell. Three people know what truly happened that night: Alloran, Gisayne and Ladanyon. Framed by someone he once thought of as a friend, he has been hiding from the Citadel's judgement. Now people from his past are turning up dead with messages he can no longer ignore.

I just had a hard time connecting with the characters within the book. Her writing is eloquent and precise but it doesn't quite develop the story progression enough to fully enjoy what she is trying to create. Adding supporting characters to Alloran and Gisayne's lives would have been crucial to building a solid, well fleshed plot. I also think it would have helped to have Ladanyon's POV throughout to add some mystery and depth. It is by no means a bad book as I said the writing flows smoothly and the editing is superb. It just didn't click with me personally. I would give another book a try to see how it goes.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. I'm giving it a four-star rating solely because I wish it had been longer! I am a wordy person and I enjoy getting to know characters and really understanding the background and what is going on in the story, getting involved in the world, etc... Ciara does a fantastic job in this novella, but still, I wanted more... which is never a bad thing!!! Aside from that, I felt sympathy for the protagonist, the Wizard, Alloran, who has been betrayed and framed by his best friend. Something that set this novella apart from other fantasy works I've read was the inclusion of demons. As a paranormal author myself, I'm both fascinated and terrified by the idea of demons, and Ms. Ballintyne certainly delivers on the horror that results from demons being set loose in an innocent city. I was particularly fond/terrified of the hellcats. Creepy little buggers! I liked Gisayne, the heroine, also, although I didn't feel like I had enough time to really connect with her. Still, I was pleased to see a female character in action! She's definitely no Cinderella! Thank you for the fantastic adventure, Ciara! Can't wait for the next one!!!

Of all the things that he is, sorcerer, controller of demons and a man who is being hunted with a dead or alive clause, you would think he would go into hiding and never raise his head again. Alloran is a man who takes honor seriously and it is this honor that keeps him from doing it. He chooses to hide in plain sight and to use this ruse to ferret out the person who is trying to ruin him by destroying those who are close to him. He and his lady love have only a short window of time to uncover this diabolical plot against him.

The World that Ciara Ballintyne has created is fully realized and the characters have depth and substance. This is a book that will suck you in and not let you go. Even after you have finished the last page you will be craving more.

When I was asked to review this book and given a free copy I was fully expecting it to be, boring and bit amateurish. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the writing and the development of the plot, scenes and characters. I would recommend this author to anyone who loves this genre.

I was glad for the opportunity to review this book. Its not my normal read so I was unsure but really got into the story once I started. The characters are well written as is the difficult situation that Alloran finds himself in. On the run, betrayed by his best friend out of spite and jealousy and with dead bodies piling up he has to face his situation instead of continuing to hide from it.

The relationship between Alloran and Gisayne felt right and Ciara sure made us hate Ladanyon.
The demons described were great and I kept picturing the confrontation at the end in my head. Wonderful visuals created. This is a good story, entertaining and well paced. The characters are well written and the story of jealousy, betrayal, demons and magic is highly fascinating. I enjoyed it and recommend checking out this high fantasy tale.

The bonus story at the end was quite the interesting bonus which I also enjoyed. Less fleshed out for obvious reasons a short story not a novella but more magic gone awry and jealousy. A great little extra.

I was offered the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. Since this is in my usual reading genre I very happily applied. I had been hearing good things about the story, so I was excited.

Part of me wishes this book were longer and part of me thinks that the length is about right for the story. I really liked the way that fantasy/magic adventure was combined with mystery. I thought that it brought some fresh air to the mage subgenre. I also felt that description was well used for the surrounding, such as for the lead female character's "starlight staircase" to the wizard's castle.

The character depth was also very well done for such a short book.

The second piece in the book is short, but within just a very few pages we are painted the story of two musician-mages and the complexity of love, loss, betrayal...

I am not certain which story that I like better: the main story that is the one that gives the book the name, or the extra treat story at the end.

First of all I would like to thank Ciara Ballintyne for letting me read and review her awesome book! Im not much of a short story reader but I loved this story. Alloran story is heartbreaking but he is true and fights for what's right. He is punished for horrible crimes he didn't commit. He is on the run because his bestfriend betrays him. Alloran hides for his life until the people he was close to are killed. He is strong and he is proud and fights till the end but can Alloran get them to realize he didn't do the crime and clear his name? Will he be able to keep the city & the girl he loves safe? Go pick up this book and find out! You won't regret it I loved this story just wish it was longer! I hate sorry stories but this was an awesome read so go check it out yourself... You won't be disappointed Ciara Ballintyne knows how to keep your attention I was hooked from the first page to the end :)
