I was able to spend a short time in Grasmere in July 2015, mostly just visiting Wordsworth's grave. If I'd read through this book ahead of time, and if I had more time, I would have sought out many of the other places (mostly the landscape of the Lake District for me) mentioned here. It is a good introduction to Wordsworth, his sister Dorothy, and others like Coleridge, and the lives they led in and around Grasmere. Abundantly illustrated with paintings from engravings the early 1800s and with quotes from poems and journals
Randomly found this book a secondhand shop, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It didn't disappoint. This is a gem of a book, rich with detail, diary extracts, pictures and poetry from Wordsworths and their friends. Really enjoyed learning about the Wordsworths. There's even a map at the back showing all the important and meaningful areas in the Lakes. Tempted to go back and do a Wordsworth and friends Lakes tour of some of the key areas!
Dorothy's journal interspersed with poetry. Their interest in nature and people is a philosophy, as is their strong relationships with each other and friend Coleridge. SHe is very intense in her love of people and is very sympathetic and lovable "heroine". She is also selfless
