Just re-read after 10 years. My original review as below still stands.

Thoroughly enjoyable English police procedural featuring the excellent Superintendent Littlejohn.

A provincial bank manager disappears and the vault is emptied of cash. Though this was completely out of character it was thought that he had done a runner and started a new life abroad. However six years later his murdered body is found in an old tomb when the local cemetery was about to turned into a shopping centre.

Littlejohn and Cromwell are called in to try and pick up the trail which has long gone cold. Bellairs provides plenty of clues and a few red herrings all with that very slight trace of wit that I really enjoy.

Four stars is possibly a bit generous but I really enjoyed it.
