Collected Poems Edith Sitwell
Always witty and flamboyant, poet, critic and biographer Dame Edith Sitwell was a champion of literary modernity. As a younger poet she challenged formal conventionalism with her own verses, such as the satirical romp Façade (1922). Later, her poetry sternly turned to class issues before she fell from fashion in the 1930s. After the Second World War, Sitwell enjoyed renewed public acclaim until her death in 1964. Her works include Clowns' Houses (1918), Gold Coast Customs (1929), The Song of the Cold (1948), Gardeners and Astronomers (1953), and The Outcasts (1962).

Early Spring
The wooden châlets of the cloud
Hang down their dull blunt ropes to shroud
Red crystal bells upon each bough
(Fruit-buds that whimper). No winds slough
Our faces, furred with cold like red
Furred buds of satyr springs, long dead!
The cold wind creaking in my blood
Seems part of it, as grain of wood;
Among the coarse goat-locks of snow
Mamzelle still drags me, to and fro;
Her feet make marks like centaur hoofs
In hairy snow; her cold reproofs
Die, and her strange eyes look oblique
As the slant crystal buds that creak.
If she could think me distant, she
In the snow's goat-locks certainly
Would try to milk those teats, the buds,
Of their warm sticky milk—the cuds
Of strange long-past fruit-hairy springs—
The beginnings of first earthy things.

Want to Read
April 15, 2008I recently read a poem by Edith Sitwell on Poetry Daily and was surprised & charmed by her facile use of language & music. I love the word glycerine in a poem! I had to add her to my to-read list.
Portrait of a Barmaid
Metallic waves of people jar
Through crackling green toward the bar
Where on the tables chattering-white
The sharp drinks quarrel with the light.
Those coloured muslin blinds the smiles,
Shroud wooden faces in their wiles—
Sometimes they splash like water (you
Yourself reflected in their hue).
The conversation loud and bright
Seems spinal bars of shunting light
In firework-spurting greenery.
O complicate machinery
For building Babel, iron crane
Beneath your hair, that blue-ribbed mane
In noise and murder like the sea
Without its mutability!
Outside the bar where jangling heat
Seems out of tune and off the beat—
A concertina's glycerine
Exudes, and mirrors in the green
Your soul: pure glucose edged with hints
Of tentative and half-soiled tints.

I have always liked her poetry. Mostly archaic sounding yet weirdly contemporary. This is an excellent anthology. Hits on all the famous poems -- plus some obscure. Good for the collection.
"Within your magic web of hair, lies furled
The fire and splendour of the ancient world;
The dire gold of the comet’s wind-blown hair;
The songs that turned to gold the evening air
When all the stars of heaven sang for joy.
The flames that burnt the cloud-high city Troy.
The mÆnad fire of spring on the cold earth;
The myrrh-lit flame that gave both death and birth
To the soul Phoenix; and the star-bright shower
That came to Danaë in her brazen tower…
Within your magic web of hair lies furled
The fire and splendour of the ancient world."

I bought this because I read that she'd said, "My personal hobbies are reading, listening to music, and silence." How perfectly bitchy. Turns out I like the poetry, too.

I typically love poetry but something about these irritated me. I'm not sure if it's just a me thing but I had a hard time finding the tempo or rhythm of her works. I read a few poems in different sections of the book to see if her style changed much but it didn't appear to. The poems are rather long winded and I had a hard time following a few. I decided Ms Sitwell is not for me.

If you like nonsense poems, the majority of this book will be hugely gratifying.

Eclectic, quirky—refreshingly different, especially for an age when the Georgians still waxed rhapsodic. “Three Poems of the Atomic Age” is quite the indictment of so-called civilized society; “The Canticle of the Rose,” last of the three, was written in 1948 after the poet learned that vegetation was beginning to sprout at Hiroshima. Though many of Sitwell’s poems drift along somewhat aimlessly, still many jewels are scattered throughout this collection, such as this gem from “The Song of the Cold”:
“Their huge Arithmetic is but endless
Repetition of Zero—the unlimited,
Eternal.—Even the beat of the heart and the pulse is
changed to this:
The counting of small deaths, the repetition
Of nothing, endless positing and suppression of
Nothing. . . . So they live
And die of inanition.”

I struggled with this, though poetry of all writing I struggle with most.
I may return to it, I may not.
There is so much writing to be read!
I may return to it, I may not.
There is so much writing to be read!

Would be 2.5 stars if not for the inclusion of "Still Falls the Rain," which bumps it up.
