I find it interesting that Miyabe Miyuki always focuses on the common people. The historical figures, the people in authority are always referenced to, but never given a voice in her books. It's always through others' perceptions, the recollections of the lowly maid, the interactions with the gardener, the impressions of the doctor.

If you were given the ability to time travel, would you change history, knowing that it's futile? You could kill a murderer and prevent the deaths of 4 others but history dictates that this event will happen, and so another murderer comes out with other victims. You could prevent a plane crash today of 500 people but there will occur the deaths of another 500 people another day in another location.

It was hard reading at times, I don't really care about modern Japanese military history, but Miyabe's writing is fascinating as always. She can truly bring a scene to life, not to mention keeping you on your toes with twists and turns

It is definitely one of the best books written by Miyuki Miyabe. The first one-third of the book is more of a sci-fi, but soon it has taken an unexpected turn to be a mystery fiction, it's delightful to follow the footsteps of a genuine teen going back through time. In the beginning, the protagonist appears as a usual ignorant youth from the 90s, but the more I read about him and the more I understand his character, in the end, I actually cared him a lot and crossed my fingers praying for good luck for everyone in the book. The ending is terrific, it's no cheesy for me, it may not be what some readers want to get over but this is perfectly written in my opinion.

A times we haven’t been experienced at all will be judged subjectively or ignored easily, but would become different totally if it’s been experienced. Not naive anymore, the thinking shall become more neutral and more objective after that. No such kind of thing can happen in reality. Thanks for the existence of novels, so that we can imagine somehow we had been through every possibilities. A heart of goodness is still available whatever.
