Find value in the imperfect, the handmade, the uncomplicated. Wabi sabi is an ancient Japanese aesthetic that emphasizes the value of simple things as a path to harmony. In Wabi Sabi Simple , author Richard R. Powell explains this intriguing Eastern philosophy in easy-to-understand terms to help you find peace and truth throughout nature and apply it to all facets of your life-at work, at home, and in your relationships.
A book that is on par with Leonard Koren's writings on wabi-sabi in terms of its depth, insight and ambition. Powell is familiar with the terminology he uses and how it can apply to so much more than just visual design. His contemplations of his surroundings on Vancouver Island, his life thus far and the simple realities that we need to acknowledge and remind ourselves to integrate into our lives speaks well to a need for greater simplicity.
A delightful little book that is a gentle reminder to take notice and to strip down, in material and immaterial ways, all that is not essential. To see beauty in the imperfect.
unless i think they are silly, books concerned with applied philosophy are difficult for me to assess objectively. i am reading this book at the right time. a nice percentage of it is resonating in both encouraging and challenging ways.
My first experience of the ideas of wabi sabi, I found parts of this very exciting, other parts incredibly trite. Some great ideas, I shall definitely read more around these ideas, but avoid this author in future.
Good overview of wabi sabi as a way of life and as a catalyst for creativity. I especially liked the final section on the golden ratio, a recurring spiral theme in nature that we respond to on a subconscious level and that can even be found in Jackson Pollock's abstract paintings.
Absolutely amazing. Clearly explains and develops the concept for our culture to understand. Changed the way I look at things since I first read it years ago.
