Once upon a time, I equated “historical” with “boring.” Oh, how wrong I’ve been. Who knew the wealth of illicit behavior that took place in the good ol’ days? Editor Lori Perkins taps into this realm with 14 heat-inducing tales in Once Upon a Threesome: An Erotic Anthology of Historical Menage A Trois.

“Inamorata” by Kristabel Reed takes the reader to Venice, circa 1690, where two star-crossed lovers – Antonio and Elisabeta – learn that the marriage of one doesn’t mean the end of the affair. When Antonio’s wife-to-be Bianca requests to meet Antonio’s lover, he’s not sure what to expect. But, will Elisabeta be convinced to share?

The anthology features a mixture of M/F/F stories, but also delves into F/F/F in tales such as Rebecca Leigh’s “Tea Time,” which takes the “desperate” out of the housewives’ situation. And Jay Hughes’ tale “Untold Riches of the Holy Land” takes a Chaucer-esque look at a three men in a public bathhouse.

Other standouts include “Lord Barclay’s Seduction,” by the ever-enticing Em Brown, where a man learns what it’ll take to keep his wife happy in the boudoir. Closing out the anthology are two wicked tales of the wanderlust of the ’60s. “Woodstock” by Garland takes a shockingly blunt look at the sex-a-pades of three concert-goers, and Elizabeth Coldwell’s “Snap Decision” leaves the reader decided on the worthiness of free lovin’.

Never, again, will I underestimate the allure of erotic historicals.

OK I'm bias, but this anthology is brilliant. It's quirky and clever, exactly what I like to read when I'm reading erotic romance.
