Pequeñas infamias
Pequeñas infamias es una novela sobre las casualidades de la vida. Sobre las que se descubren con sorpresa, sobre las que no llegan a descubrirse y sin embargo marcan nuestro destino, y sobre las que se descubren pero se mantienen en secreto, porque hay verdades que no deberían saberse nunca. Puede leerse, también, como una sátira de sociedad, como el retrato psicológico de una galería de personajes, o como un apasionante relato de intriga, cuyo misterio no se resuelve hasta las últimas páginas. En la casa de veraneo de un acaudalado coleccionista de arte se reúne un variopinto grupo de personas. Juntas pasan unas cuantas horas y, a pesar de las frases agradables y los comentarios corteses, la relación acabará envenenada por lo que no se dicen. Cada una de ellas esconde un secreto; cada una de ellas esconde una infamia. La realidad adquiere de pronto el carácter de un rompecabezas cuyas piezas se acercan y amenazan con acoplarse. El destino es caprichoso y se divierte creando extrañas coincidencias.

The initial idea on which this survey was based is fascinating; the decor is original; the theme of the diary mingling with recipe secrets is enticing. But the writing drags on. Is it due to the translation? I'm not sure. I found it difficult to continue without interruptions. That's a shame. This book deserves a television adaptation, as we have known how to do (and succeed) for a few years.

Me ha sorprendido que me gustara de la forma en que lo ha hecho ya que, es un libro en el que no me habría fijado si no fuera porque lo propusieron en un club de lectura. Y la verdad es que no se el motivo por el cual no lo había leído aún. Es un libro que se lee rápido y está escrito de una forma que a mí se me antojó bastante cómica si bien los sucesos que pasan en el libro no son divertidos. Quizá ha sido la sátira social que se plasma en sus páginas y el hecho de que haya tanto salseo (no nos vamos a engañar, prácticamente todo el libro es ir descubriendo los secretos que guardan los personajes que se reúnen en la casa, independientemente de lo que ha sucedido ese día específico). Me ha gustado mucho y me ha sorprendido el final. Totalmente recomendable!

“His moustache was thicker than ever, so stiff a fly could have strolled out to the end, like a prisoner walking the plank on a pirate ship. Except that flies can’t survive in a cold room and thirty below zero, and neither could the owner of the blond frozen moustache: Nestor Chaffino, chef and pastry cook, renowned for his masterful way with a chocolate fondant."
The famous clairvoyant Madame Longstaffe, with her Yoruba accent, predicted Nestor Chaffino of the Mulberry & Mistletoe - restaurant's death with her words: "He who believes he is mortally ill shall die not by his illness but by ice, and he who believes that words can kill should not keep them so close to his heart."
He had a little moleskin black book containing more than secret recipes. A few little indiscretions by ordinary people who hit behind their social high class, were dutifully recorded as well. Perhaps a book. Who knows? But he thought that Madame Longstaffe did not know about the little notebook at all.
Yet, the old woman insisted: "Do as you please, enjoy yourself, my friend, fall in love, write a scandalous novel, learn how to play the bassoon, whatever you like. Don't worry about your future, because Madame Longstaffe has seen it clearly: Nestor has nothing to fear until four T's conspire against him....For your luck to turn, four T's would have to join forces, and that could never come to pass, could it? Although coincidences do occur. The gods are fond of practical jokes."
Nestor, with his little black moleskin notebook of secret indiscretions did not believe in coincidences. He didn't think it was hard to cheat destiny, after all not after his own secret discoveries. Adela Teldi would have to stay where she was found, still locked up in that armoire, she, with her little indiscretions with its unforeseen consequences, her own homemade Greek tragedy, her own soap opera scandal. No it was not that hard to cheat destiny. If the gods can play tricks, so can he. "And then, predictably employing a gastronomical simile, he vowed that the little indiscretion would never be divulged, because coincidences, he thought, are like soufflés: they come to nothing unless someone takes the trouble to beat, stir, or otherwise agitate the egg whites."
The plot is so amazingly constructed. Every element in the story belongs there. A wide variety of social issues addressed with infinite finesse, often satirically, and all the characters are well defined.
Now that's the formal part of the review. What I find difficult to explain is how this book was not about thrifty detectives or whodunit-tricks pulled from a magician's imaginary black hat. It is a murder mystery, by any means, but oh so very different.
"With a real death and a couple of basic ideas, it is not hard to spin a story of passion, secrets, and malice, because lies can be perfectly convincing if they contain an element of truth."
Even this observation does not really explain why this murder mystery was totally different, and when someone is murdered, a confession will come. It is the form in which it is presented that will blow your socks of.

"Click"....when renowned pastry cook Nestor chaffinch hears the freezer door swing shut behind him as he stacks away his chocolate fondants he knows he is doomed to a slow and frosty death. It was all a terrible accident - or was it?
There is no shortage of suspects at this smart weekend house party - among them the host Ernesto Teldi, a prosperous art dealer; his ageing wife Adela; and Serafin Tous, a widower with shameful urges concealed beneath his judges robes. There is also Nestor's team of eccentric helpers - Chloe, a pierced oddball obsessed by her brother's premature death; her lover Karel Pligh, a Czech body-builder, and Carlos Garcia, Adela Teldi's obsessive young lover. Serving up delectable desserts to his clients for generations, Nestor is privy to their private lives. Could his little moleskin book really contain just a harmless list of culinary secrets? Or are they secrets of a more damaging nature?
This was supposed to be a perfectly plotted novel to gladden the hearts of all amateur detectives ... the perfect blend of Agatha Christie and Pedro Amodovar (?) - wonderfully funny and dark. It is none of these things.
I found it convoluted, improbable and repetitive.It is full of (culinary)inconsistencies and errors.
Probably the worst thing is, it could have been a damned good story - it just isn't.

Ni fu ni fa. Calidad literaria no se la voy a negar, en términos de escritura y estilo; la vertiente sarcástica está más que presente... pero, en conjunto, la historia resulta un tanto repetitiva y, para novela, excesivamente larga para un argumento que no pasa de ser anecdótico en la forma que se nos presenta.

What have we here? A murder mystery set in the beautiful location of Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. Who is the unfortunate victim? A pastry chef whose only distinguishing feature is his prominent mustache (Poirot is that you?). Why would anyone want to kill him? For quite a lot of reasons actually as we will soon find out!
Little did Pastry Chef Nestor Chaffino realize that when he is hired to cater for a party in a beautiful villa at the Costa Del Sol, it will be the last thing that he will ever do. Unbeknownst to himself, he has earned a lot of enemies by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time or saying the wrong thing in front of a wrong audience. As luck would have it there is a prophecy that warns him about the upcoming disaster which unfortunately for him (and luckily for the readers) he doesn't heed.
This murder mystery has no detectives, it is the job of the readers to figure out the whodunnit and possibly the whydunnit. This book had the intense atmosphere reminiscent of Agatha Christie books and I kept expecting Poirot to pop in at inopportune moments, but I guess two dudes with prominent mustaches are a little too much for any book, so alas we're just left with the chef, who unfortunately turns up a little too dead to be of much use.
But don't worry, there are other quirky characters in the book who may or may not turn up dead; who may or may not have committed the murder; who may or may not have something(s) to hide. There's also something for the masterchef fans in this book; a little black book filled with cooking secrets- which may or may not be the instigator that sets of all the events that take place in this book- titled Little Indiscretions (or Pequeñas Infamias as the translation goes). So have a happy little reading vacation in a beautiful Spanish countryside that may or may not be punctuated with murders at every turn!
P.S. also beware the wrath of the cockroaches.

Pequeñas infamias de Carmen Posadas comienza con la muerte aparentemente accidental del chef Néstor Chaffino, pero pronto descubrimos que todos los personajes esconden secretos, mentiras y pequeñas traiciones que van tejiendo una trama llena de ironía y sutileza.
La historia muestra la hipocresía y las apariencias dentro de la alta sociedad. Cada personaje tiene su propia “pequeña infamia”, y al final ninguna máscara queda intacta.
Carmen ha logrado que me sienta dentro de ese ambiente refinado, mientras juega con el misterio hasta el final. Es una mezcla de novela negra y comedia social, hace pensar que todos tenemos nuestras propias pequeñas infamias cotidianas.
Me hizo sospechar de todos los personajes por igual. La novela no está mal pero no es de lo que más me ha gustado de Carmen Posadas.

"Małe niegodziwości" to lekka powieść obyczajowa, tak lekka, że nie odciska się na żadnym wewnętrznym organie - nie łapie za serce, nie uwiera w mózg, nie leży na wątrobie. Choć napisana jest przyjemnym językiem i zawiera intrygę kryminalną nie byłam w stanie zmusić się do powrotu do niej po kilku dniach przerwy w lekturze. Jest to doskonale nijaka powieść, idealna do poczytania w czasie pobytu w szpitalu, w czasie podróży, czy na plaży.
Polecam jedynie jako przerywnik miedzy cięższymi pozycjami lub czytelnikom, którym nie przeszkadza atmosfera latynoskiej telenoweli.
P.S. Muszę dodać, że nie jest to jednak literaturopodobny wyrób pisany na akord i według ogranego schematu. Raczej nazwałabym tę powieść błahą. Przypominała mi w nastroju „Kaprysik” Szczygła lub powieści Mendozy.
Polecam jedynie jako przerywnik miedzy cięższymi pozycjami lub czytelnikom, którym nie przeszkadza atmosfera latynoskiej telenoweli.

The opening is wonderful.

Nestor has been hired to cater for a country house weekend. But he has come down to the cool room and the door has shut and located behind him. Was it a mistake? An accident? Or murder? The emergency alarm fails, and Nestor more and more anxiously tries to work out what to do. He considers who else is in the house and might hear his cries – a useful introduction to the cast. He hears noises outside and it seems rescue is at hand. But we already know otherwise.
It’s a stylish and gripping first chapter, and it whets the appetite for what is to come next.
What comes is the discovery of the body and an account of all of those in the house – where they are, what they are doing, what they are thinking – when they hear the finder’s cries. A diverse and colourful cast is brought to life. So far so good, but isn’t it time for the plot to get going?
Yes, it is! But it’s here that things start to go a little wrong.
You see, it is accepted that there has been a tragic accident. There is no investigation, no detective present and nobody to ask questions.
More and more is revealed about the characters, their secrets, their links, their relationships. And finally the truth of what happened on the night that Nestor died.
At one level the story is well constructed and well written. But there was nothing driving it. And although the cast was colourful, there was nobody to care about, nobody to hang on to.
The ending was interesting, but maybe a little bit of a cheat.
With the addition of a detective and an investigation this could have been a wonderful story. Without it was a book worth finishing, but a book that didn’t quite deliver.
Enough promise though in this first novel that I think I will pick up another of Carmen Posada’s books that I’ve seen in the library one of these days.

This one isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I struggled to get through it because it seemed like such a waste of my time. Inane is the best descriptor for this book.

Je signe ici ma première rencontre avec Carmen Posadas, auteure espagnole que j’avais déjà découvert il y a un moment dans sélection de polars par pays. Petites infamies n’est pas son premier roman cependant ! Sorti en 1998 et primé en tant que Prix Planeta de la même année, la première édition française a trouvé preneur chez Le Seuil, puis chez Points en version Poche. Il faudra bien avouer que ce n’est pas le résumé qui m’a appelé à acheter le livre, mais bien sa couverture particulièrement sobre et… intrigante. Un titre à double sens et une fourchette, que peut-il y avoir dans ce polar comparé à l’une des œuvres d’Agatha Christie ?
Les mêmes ingrédients que la Reine britannique du crime, en effet : beaucoup de personnages qui se côtoient dans un lieu assez restreint, bien qu’il ne s’agisse pas d’un huis-clos. Des personnages qui ont des secrets, un cadavre retrouvé dans une chambre froide, et des mobiles de meurtre en quantité. Qui cache un secret a tout intérêt à le protéger, et il se trouve que Néstor Chaffino, la victime, en savait peut-être trop. Voici donc un roman qui reprend la recette d’un polar à la Agatha, avec une petite touche en plus. La gastronomie comme thème, tout comme l’indique la couverture : une fourchette et un titre à double sens. Ces infamies, sont-ce des infamies mangeables, ou des secrets que personne ne veut voir dévoiler au grand jour ? Malgré tous ces bons ingrédients qui prédisaient un excellent moment de lecture, je n’ai pas pu m’immerger comme je le voulais dans ce Petites infamies tentateur. Carmen Posadas a la maîtrise de ses mots, de ses personnages, les mots glissent dans une certaine poésie, mais ce délice du style ne suffit pas à faire tenir le roman.
Trois raisons à mon avis mitigé : la mise en page donne des paragraphes décidément trop longs et hélas pas assez espacés. Pour mes yeux malades, ce n’était déjà pas évident de poursuivre la lecture au fil des chapitres. Ensuite, le nombre de personnages. Ce n’est pas nouveau, Agatha Christie en a d’ailleurs fait l’une de ses marques de fabrique, et j’ai parfois du mal à me souvenir de qui est qui, quel secret appartient à qui. Avec Carmen Posadas, c’est encore plus délicat, parce qu’au-delà de la mise en page et des personnages, la façon de présenter la narration bouge beaucoup, aussi. Une première partie où l’on découvre la réaction de chaque personnage à l’annonce de la mort de Néstor, avec le présage de secrets bien enfouis. Chaque autre partie se découpe en chapitres qui sautent d’un personnage à l’autre, de lieu à lieu, et il y a aussi le livre de Néstor, ses fameuses Petites infamies. Il y a sa correspondance.
Avis mitigé, je ne le cacherai pas. C’est que tout au long des chapitres, il y a l’enquête sur la mort de ce pauvre Néstor qui savait tout, avec une obligation de remonter dans le temps pour savoir comment il en est arrivé là. Après ça, il y a les « sous-intrigues » où le lecteur est amené à découvrir les secrets de chacun, des secrets si lourds qui auraient pu servir de mobile pour un meurtre aussi froid. Pardon, mauvais jeu de mot ! Sur le papier, c’est palpitant, exaltant, mais quand il faut taper dans ce petit pavé, cet intérêt se mue en attente, puis en indifférence. Arrive alors la fin, comme un petit plaisir au chocolat, celui qui te réconforte. La fin est mémorable ; enfin, surtout la révélation de qui a tué Néstor, et pourquoi. La raison m’a paru légère, puis j’y ai réfléchi à nouveau. Un petit coup de génie qui fonctionne sur moi et ne fonctionnera peut-être pas sur d’autres lecteurs.
Alors, mitigé toujours ? Hélas oui, une fin comme je les aime et un style plaisant ne suffisent pas à relever le surplus de personnages, leur personnalité assez exagérée et les longueurs qui accompagnent. Ceci dit, Carmen Posadas a publié d’autres romans, pourquoi ne pas me laisser tenter ?

Les mêmes ingrédients que la Reine britannique du crime, en effet : beaucoup de personnages qui se côtoient dans un lieu assez restreint, bien qu’il ne s’agisse pas d’un huis-clos. Des personnages qui ont des secrets, un cadavre retrouvé dans une chambre froide, et des mobiles de meurtre en quantité. Qui cache un secret a tout intérêt à le protéger, et il se trouve que Néstor Chaffino, la victime, en savait peut-être trop. Voici donc un roman qui reprend la recette d’un polar à la Agatha, avec une petite touche en plus. La gastronomie comme thème, tout comme l’indique la couverture : une fourchette et un titre à double sens. Ces infamies, sont-ce des infamies mangeables, ou des secrets que personne ne veut voir dévoiler au grand jour ? Malgré tous ces bons ingrédients qui prédisaient un excellent moment de lecture, je n’ai pas pu m’immerger comme je le voulais dans ce Petites infamies tentateur. Carmen Posadas a la maîtrise de ses mots, de ses personnages, les mots glissent dans une certaine poésie, mais ce délice du style ne suffit pas à faire tenir le roman.
Trois raisons à mon avis mitigé : la mise en page donne des paragraphes décidément trop longs et hélas pas assez espacés. Pour mes yeux malades, ce n’était déjà pas évident de poursuivre la lecture au fil des chapitres. Ensuite, le nombre de personnages. Ce n’est pas nouveau, Agatha Christie en a d’ailleurs fait l’une de ses marques de fabrique, et j’ai parfois du mal à me souvenir de qui est qui, quel secret appartient à qui. Hoy seguimos con los Premios Planeta, esta vez con el de 1998… Pequeñas infamias de Carmen Posadas, que aunque tengo que reconocer que me ha gustado más que los dos anteriores, ha habido algunas cosas que me han vuelto a escamar… luego os cuento. Esta vez nos centraremos primero en lo que me ha gustado.
En el caso de los personajes me han flipado mucho algunos en concreto como son Chloe, Karel o Carlos (y Néstor, aunque al principio no ha sido santo de mi devoción, ha logrado que mi opinión sobre él cambiara); pero aunque os nombre algunos en concreto todos los personajes en su totalidad está muy bien desarrollados y cada uno tiene su historia muy bien llevada. En cuanto a la ambientación (tanto en pasado como en presente, porque aquí tendremos viajes en el tiempo para explicar según que cosas) me pareció muy buena, aunque no de lo más llamativo del libro (sí que me encanto las descripciones sobre la mansión de Las Lilas), puede que me faltara un poco de descripciones, pero no estuvo nada mal.
En cuanto a la historia, sin duda fue mi cosa favorita… la autora consigue tratar varios temas peliagudos (como puede ser la dictadura argentina, la homofobia, la infidelidad o el duelo mal llevado) y no los lleva nada mal; sabe prestarle su atención con el personaje al que se lo adjudica (no os contaré cuál es cada uno para no hacer spoiler). En cuanto al nivel de tensión, ha sido bastante bueno y ha sabido mantenerse en el tiempo, durante todo el libro, sin ningún problema (bajo mi opinión)... te pasaras las más de 300 páginas preguntándote quién ha cerrado el congelador con Néstor dentro. Porque esa es otra, me flipo muchísimo como la Carmen consigue darle la vuelta total al personaje del chef y hacer que nuestra opinión sobre él cambie mucho.
Y si os he dicho lo que me ha gustado… así que ahora toca lo que no me ha terminado de convencer y han sido dos cosas en concreto: una, cosa que ya critique en el primer PP que leí, El desencuentro, es el tema del ince*to, no veo nada normal que se trate ese tema como una relación amorosa (aunque sí que reconozco que en este caso no me ha parecido tan fuerte porque ellos lo desconocen) y, por último, el final. Siento que se me ha quedado corto y no me gusta el giro que le han dado a cierto personaje. Y con todo esto, ¿os lo recomendaría? Sin duda, creo que de los 3 que llevo (no cuento el de Eva y el de Dolores, ni La Bestia) ha sido mi favorito.

Me ha encantado la manera de empezar, ha sido bestial, como me ha trasmitido esta angustia antes de morir.
Tal cual, empieza con una muerte y esto me atrapa, y te deja en la duda si ha sido un accidente o hay alguien detras, nunca mejor dicho, quien ha podido influir a su desgracia.
Nos cuenta a partir de aquí, una serie de casualidades entre las personas, con un punto en común, este gran cocinero de Nestor, nuestro congelado 🥶.
Se suponia que tenia que ser un libro entretenido, supongo que si, o mentalmente debo madurar un poco mas, pero personalmente a mi no me lo ha parecido, creo que en leer el principio y el final me bastaba, para parecerme interesante y se pierde con los personajes.
No se si atreverme con mas de esta autora, por ahora, la descarto, quien sabe si en unos años le damos una oportunidad. Pero ahora no me veo capacitada, ni tengo ganas de seguir por esta linea.
Tengo que reconocer que el final, estuvo bien. Me gusto gratamente por eso, tiene mi aprovado.

En 1998 Carmen Posadas recibió el Premio Planeta por el libro “Pequeñas infamias” y fue bien merecido porque esta original novela muestra un círculo perfecto lleno de serendipias y desencuentros. La escritora uruguayo española reúne a un grupo de personajes en un escenario ideal para el encuentro entre coleccionistas de arte y un equipo de suministro de comidas preparadas para grupos, donde se presentan pequeñas infamias o coincidencias, o trampas o secretos entre todos ellos.
Así, el chef Néstor Chafino definiría que “las casualidades son como los suflés: no crecen si nadie se ocupa de agitar, de batir o de encrespar las claras” (p. 194) y la lectora o lector se deleitará posiblemente hasta relamerse los bigotes, con la mezcla de las historias de los personajes presentadas como pequeñas infamias que motivan un crimen que se presenta al principio del texto pero que la autora describirá las historias de los personajes principales mezclados como ingredientes de un exquisito postre.

Recebido na Chuva de Livros de Aniversário do BookCrossing, este livro foi uma leitura ligeira e muito engraçada.
Viajando entre várias perspectivas de vários personagens, tudo o que queremos saber foi quem deixou o cozinheiro fechado no frigorífico. Com isto vamos aprender os pequenos detalhes e infâmias da vida de cada um e porque é que todos têm uma razão para se odiar uns aos outros.
A narrativa está bem construída e a ligeireza da escrita torna este livro muito engraçado. Rapidamente deixamos de querer saber do pobre cozinheiro congelado, para a nossa atenção se virar para os pequeninos dramas de cada um e como eles tornam as relações mais picantes.
Também é um pequeno livro de cozinha!

La vida está llena de pequeñas coincidencias, pero hay momentos en que se multiplican y puedes pensar que el universo se ha conjurado en tu contra o a tu favor. ¿Cómo llamamos a esto, destino o simplemente es por azar?.
Esta obra, Premio Planeta 1998, es una novela ligera que al principio me pareció muy entretenida y en cierta manera me recordó a las típicas novelas de Agatha Christie (un muerto y un grupo cerrado de personas que desean su muerte por una u otra razón), pero….. al final ha resultado demasiado repetitiva y con demasiadas carambolas que le quitan verosimilitud.

Dari judul (edisi terjemahan Indonesia)-nya, Rahasia Sang Koki, saya sama sekali tidak punya kecurigaan, bahwa novel ini sebuah novel bergenre misteri atau detektif. Perkiraan saya ini kisah percintaan yang berawal dari dapur (makanan). Ringkasnya, cinta yang datang dari perut turun ke hati.
Kiranya, dugaan saya meleset jauh. Novel yang dalam bahasa aslinya (Spanyol) berjudul Pequenas Infamias (edisi Inggrisnya berjudul Little Indiscretion) ini ternyata adalah sebuah novel misteri – dan detektif juga – dengan pola dan plot yang mengingatkan saya pada novel-novel Agatha Christie, khususnya serial Poirot, detektif berperawakan kecil asal Belgia kesayangan Christie. Ada yang sangat khas dari Poirot dalam setiap memecahkan kasus-kasusnya, yakni mengumpulkan fakta dan petunjuk sebanyak-banyaknya kemudian dianalisa,disusun seperti puzzle sembari duduk diam membiarkan sel-sel kelabu dalam otaknya bekerja.
Bisa jadi kemiripan teknik bercerita itu lantaran Carmen terpengaruh Agatha Christie, si Ratu Cerita Detektif dari Inggris.
Kisah bermula dengan ditemukannya sosok Nestor Chaffino terbujur beku dalam ruang pendingin di dapur keluarga Teldi (Hampir di semua novel Agatha Christie dibuka dengan adegan penemuan mayat). Kejadiannya pagi hari setelah malamnya berlangsung pesta makan malam dengan Nestor sebagai juru masaknya. Sejatinya, Nestor adalah pemilik usaha katering berlabel Mulberry & Mistletoe. Malam itu, ia disewa oleh Adela Teldi, nyonya rumah The Lilies, tempat kediaman keluarga Teldi.
Bersama 3 orang kru dapurnya, Nestor sukses melaksanakan tugasnya dengan sempurna malam itu.. Tetamu ramai-ramai memuji dan menyampaikan rasa puas mereka untuk pesta yang elegan tersebut. Sekali lagi, semua itu berkat kerja keras dan kekompakan tim kecil mereka : Nestor sebagai bos beserta Carlos, Karel, dan Chloe.
Carlos adalah mahasiswa hukum yang diam-diam terlibat asmara dengan Adela Teldi, wanita paruh baya yang lebih pantas jadi ibunya. Panah amor menusuk jantung keduanya pada pertemuan pertama mereka di Mulberry & Mistletoe tatkala Adela datang untuk urusan pesta makan malam yang berujung maut itu.
Sedangkan Karel adalah atlet binaragawan asal Ceko yang mengajak serta kekasihnya, Chloe Trias, bekerja membantu-bantu di Mulberry & Mistletoe. Chloe kabur dari rumah orang tuanya dengan membawa serta kenang-kenangan manis tentang sang kakak lelaki yang mati muda karena kecelakaan lalu-lintas. Bayang-bayang wajah dan senyum abangnya itu selalu menghantui ke manapun Chloe pergi. Gadis itu merasa amat kehilangan sahabat masa kecil yang pernah bercita-cita menjadi seorang penulis fiksi. Sayangnya, si abang keburu mati sebelum keinginannya terwujud.
Ketiga anak muda pegawai Mulberry & Mistletoe ini sangat senang bekerja untuk bos mereka sang koki handal, Nestor Chaffino. Koki ramah pemilik kumis pirang kaku ini senang berceloteh menceritakan apa saja, terutama kisah-kisah sejati yang pernah dialaminya, termasuk ihwal rahasia perselingkuhan Adela Teldi.
Pada masa yang lalu, Adela Teldi tertangkap basah tengah bercinta di sebuah kamar di The Lilies bersama suami adiknya sendiri, Soledad Teldi. Tak lama berselang, Soledad kedapatan sudah tak bernyawa dengan kondisi mengenaskan. Diduga perempuan malang itu melakukan aksi bunuh diri terjun dari lantai dua.
Nestor juga mengetahui perihal bisnis curang yang pernah dilakukan Ernesto Teldi, suami Adela, bertahun-tahun silam. Rahasia lain lagi yang dimiliki sang koki adalah tentang Serafin Tous yang gay dan pedofilia. Di The Lilies itulah, ketiga orang ini – Adela, Ernesto, dan Serafin – menyadari kehadiran Nestor. Ketiganya merasa terancam dan cemas. Mereka takut rahasia mereka akan dibeberkan Nestor atau koki itu akan memeras mereka. Maka ketiganya memiliki motif yang kuat untuk melenyapkan Sang Koki dari atas dunia.
Demikianlah cerita bergulir dalam tempo lambat sehingga bisa dimaklumi jika ada pembaca yang mengaku bosan mengikutinya. Tapi sebaiknya jangan buru-buru meletakkan novel ini dan berhenti membacanya sebelum tamat karena selanjutnya kita akan menemukan keasyikannya dengan ikut serta menebak-nebak siapa gerangan yang membunuh Nestor.
Sebagaimana lazim kita jumpai pada novel-novel misteri atau detektif, penulis menggiring para pembacanya pada banyak kemungkinan. Pembaca seperti diarahkan untuk mencurigai beberapa tokoh sebagai penjahatnya melalui paparan motif tadi. Dan biasanya sih, penjahatnya justru tokoh yang seakan-akan tidak ditonjolkan. Itulah yang nyaris selalu kita temukan dalam karya-karya Agatha Christie.
Barangkali agak kurang tepat juga jika dikatakan bahwa Little Indiscretion ini sebuah novel detektif mengingat di dalamnya tak ada seorang detektif pun yang hadir. Kendati demikian tak lantas membuat novel debutan Carmen Posadas ini jadi kurang menarik. Padanya kita tetap dapat menemukan unsur-unsur misteri yang memicu rasa penasaran. Kita bahkan bisa menjadi detektifnya.
Lewat karya perdananya ini Carmen Posadas berhasil meraih Planeta Prize (1998), penghargaan sastra paling bergengsi di Spanyol. Sejak diterbitkannya, novel ini telah diterjemahkan ke dalam 18 bahasa.

Carlos adalah mahasiswa hukum yang diam-diam terlibat asmara dengan Adela Teldi, wanita paruh baya yang lebih pantas jadi ibunya. Panah amor menusuk jantung keduanya pada pertemuan pertama mereka di Mulberry & Mistletoe tatkala Adela datang untuk urusan pesta makan malam yang berujung maut itu.
Sedangkan Karel adalah atlet binaragawan asal Ceko yang mengajak serta kekasihnya, Chloe Trias, bekerja membantu-bantu di Mulberry & Mistletoe. Chloe kabur dari rumah orang tuanya dengan membawa serta kenang-kenangan manis tentang sang kakak lelaki yang mati muda karena kecelakaan lalu-lintas. Bayang-bayang wajah dan senyum abangnya itu selalu menghantui ke manapun Chloe pergi. Gadis itu merasa amat kehilangan sahabat masa kecil yang pernah bercita-cita menjadi seorang penulis fiksi. Sayangnya, si abang keburu mati sebelum keinginannya terwujud.
Ketiga anak muda pegawai Mulberry & Mistletoe ini sangat senang bekerja untuk bos mereka sang koki handal, Nestor Chaffino. Koki ramah pemilik kumis pirang kaku ini senang berceloteh menceritakan apa saja, terutama kisah-kisah sejati yang pernah dialaminya, termasuk ihwal rahasia perselingkuhan Adela Teldi.
Pada masa yang lalu, Adela Teldi tertangkap basah tengah bercinta di sebuah kamar di The Lilies bersama suami adiknya sendiri, Soledad Teldi. Tak lama berselang, Soledad kedapatan sudah tak bernyawa dengan kondisi mengenaskan. Diduga perempuan malang itu melakukan aksi bunuh diri terjun dari lantai dua.
Nestor juga mengetahui perihal bisnis curang yang pernah dilakukan Ernesto Teldi, suami Adela, bertahun-tahun silam. Rahasia lain lagi yang dimiliki sang koki adalah tentang Serafin Tous yang gay dan pedofilia. Di The Lilies itulah, ketiga orang ini – Adela, Ernesto, dan Serafin – menyadari kehadiran Nestor. Ketiganya merasa terancam dan cemas. Mereka takut rahasia mereka akan dibeberkan Nestor atau koki itu akan memeras mereka. Maka ketiganya memiliki motif yang kuat untuk melenyapkan Sang Koki dari atas dunia.
Demikianlah cerita bergulir dalam tempo lambat sehingga bisa dimaklumi jika ada pembaca yang mengaku bosan mengikutinya. Tapi sebaiknya jangan buru-buru meletakkan novel ini dan berhenti membacanya sebelum tamat karena selanjutnya kita akan menemukan keasyikannya dengan ikut serta menebak-nebak siapa gerangan yang membunuh Nestor.
Sebagaimana lazim kita jumpai pada novel-novel misteri atau detektif, penulis menggiring para pembacanya pada banyak kemungkinan. Pembaca seperti diarahkan untuk mencurigai beberapa tokoh sebagai penjahatnya melalui paparan motif tadi. Dan biasanya sih, penjahatnya justru tokoh yang seakan-akan tidak ditonjolkan. Itulah yang nyaris selalu kita temukan dalam karya-karya Agatha Christie.
Barangkali agak kurang tepat juga jika dikatakan bahwa Little Indiscretion ini sebuah novel detektif mengingat di dalamnya tak ada seorang detektif pun yang hadir. Kendati demikian tak lantas membuat novel debutan Carmen Posadas ini jadi kurang menarik. Padanya kita tetap dapat menemukan unsur-unsur misteri yang memicu rasa penasaran. Kita bahkan bisa menjadi detektifnya.
Lewat karya perdananya ini Carmen Posadas berhasil meraih Planeta Prize (1998), penghargaan sastra paling bergengsi di Spanyol. Sejak diterbitkannya, novel ini telah diterjemahkan ke dalam 18 bahasa.

Saya membaca versi Bahasa Indonesia dengan judul 'Rahasia Sang Koki'. Awalnya sempat akan menyerah ketika sedang membaca, karena alurnya lambat dan banyak flashback. Dan ketika menyelesaikan membaca serta mengetahui akhir cerita, saya sempat 'Kok gini, sih?!'
Tetapi kemudian, seiring bertambahnya usia, saya melihat buku ini dengan sudut pandang yang berbeda. Justru akhir cerita yang tadinya membuat saya tidak terima, malah justru menarik karena meninggalkan kesan tersendiri bagi pembaca. Saran saya, anda harus sabar ketika membaca buku ini.

The book begins with Nestor Chaffin trapped in a walk in freezer after hosting a house party. The next morning Nestor's body is found then the book goes back two weeks to see what led to this event. Most of the book is more about the people who stayed overnight after the house party and their secrets. There is very little investigation into the murder. According to the book jacket this is also a sparkling social satire. I didn't get any of the satire part, possibly because I've never lived in Spain.

Primera novela que leo de Carmen Posadas, escritora que conocía por sus artículos. Debo decir que escribe muy bien, pero la novela (por muy premio Planeta que sea) me ha decepcionado.
La historia gira alrededor de la muerte de un cocinero y las circunstancias y personajes relacionados con él. La novela empieza con el final y continúa con las circunstancias que llegan a ese desenlace, que me ha parecido estúpido y poco creíble.

Em 'Pequenas Infâmias', Carmen Posadas nos apresenta um romance que, embora contenha momentos literários agradáveis, geralmente se mantém dentro das convenções do gênero, não conseguindo se destacar de forma transcendente. Embora a autora demonstre habilidade em alguns trechos, a trama, em sua maior parte, pode ser considerada monótona e pouco inovadora. Neste vasto universo literário, há obras que merecem prioridade e atenção, deixando 'Pequenas Infâmias' em uma posição menos notável.
