Not the Same River #2

From Tangled Roots Come Twisted Wings

Rate this book
When the river rises, there’ll be blood on my hands. The Penhaligons are tracking the coven as they wreak havoc abroad—creating new vaewolves, attracting wraiths, building an army. Violet knows this: an attack will come when the river rises. What she doesn’t know is why. The tree tapestry Mara spent a century seeking is the key, but the Penhaligons are running out of time to discover what it unlocks. When the coven returns to England, bigger and stronger than ever, it’s not long before allegiances are tested, throwing Violet’s tentative relationship with her sister into doubt. When the river rises, Violet must fight for her life, but in the midst of battle, sacrifices will always be made, and her best friend will be changed forever. Hell is here, and she brought friends. From Tangled Roots Come Twisted Wings is book 2 of Not the Same River , a six-book series that follows Violet as she goes from lost orphan to treasured warrior, finding the clan she would die for along the way. If you haven’t read book 1 yet, you should start there as this series is meant to be read in order. Due to adult language and dark themes, this book is recommended for readers aged 15+ and is ideal for upper YA/crossover readers who enjoy diverse stories.

I’m never quite sure how I feel after reading this author’s books. The first was different enough that I wanted to read the second. The family is of angelic descent. Unit, thee aren’t enough of them to fight of those of demonic descent. Their really strong guns are angels but don’t often put in an appearance. The younger members of the family are the ones who take point in this fight. They do get some reinforcements when desperate though.

The story takes a completely different view of angels and gods. Some people may take offense but you have to remember that it it just for entertainment. It’s also interesting because it takes a look at life from the point of view of a mixed race girl who has been in care for most of her life to this point. The question is, why did it take so long for her to be found? There are explanations but I found them to be not quite believable. A strange but very interesting story.

Violet and Amethyst deepen their relationship while trying to fight the coven and get closer to their dad.

The pace of the book is much better than the first one and therefore more enjoyable. I still have a lot of questions about the coven but I really enjoy the way Violet has grown. Absolutely love the way fantasy and mythology are intertwined. Violet's character felt more developed and grounded in comparison with the first book, some of her choices were poor but I guess that's part of being a teenager.

I’m not completely sure the world shaping of the story is clear and a lot of things seem to happen by coincidence.

This second book, like part one, also starts a little bit flowery and philosophical but that is a lot less difficult to get through.

A wonderful story unfolds, original and unpredictable. With almost all the characters from the first book, which are developing further and also introducing some new characters. While the first book was mainly about finding one's place and discovering heritage, this book takes the reader into dangerous adventures with drama and life and limb threatening fights. I am really curious where the third book will lead us to.

Oh my goodness. This is a terrific series that I am just loving. Violet is learning about her real world and her real family. There are more exciting situations and more interesting characters, both good and bad. A mysterious tapestry, wraiths, vaewolves, siblings, and lots of goats, yes goats! The surprises keep coming and bad things are on the horizon.
Inka York has done some magnificent world building and has a marvelous way of describing things and inventing interesting characters.

⭐️ 4/5

This was such a fun read, with plenty of little twists along the way!

It’s a lot more action-packed and less descriptive than the first book, which actually made it easier to follow. That said, there were still a few things left unexplained, which, although left me a bit confused, it also made me have a bunch of theories swirling around in my head!

Overall, it’s a great continuation of the series. I love that I can never guess what’s going to happen next! ^-^.

From Tangled Roots Come Twisted Wings by Inka York is dark, intense, and beautifully layered. Family ties, dangerous magic, and rising tension kept me turning pages late into the night. The mix of gothic atmosphere and sharp emotional stakes makes this book both haunting and irresistible. A gripping continuation of the series that left me eager for more.

In this continuation of book one we see Violet learn more about herself, her family, and we watch her continue to grow as a person. We learn more of the depths of angels, nephilim, vampires, and Carole’s. This author will keep you entranced from the very first page and will keep you wanting more of her writing, the world she has created, and her characters.
