January 4, 2022Ich hatte das Buch vor ein paar Jahren mal in der Bücherei ausgeliehen (als Hörbuch) da war ich so um die 14 und es hat mich zugegebenermaßen ein bisschen verstört. Nicht unbedingt das, was man anhören sollte wenn man versucht zu schlafen, aber das ist mein Fehler gewesen, nicht der des Buches. Letztendlich habe ich es nie zu Ende gebracht, folglich auch keine Bewertung. Aber bis zu dem Punkt zu dem ich gekommen war, war es okay wenn auch etwas absurd.

Wolfgang Hohlbein is one of my all time favourite fantasy authors, but I hadn’t read his books in years and especially not since I’ve become a power reader so I was curious to see how this holds up.
In ANUBIS we follow Belgian-American Mogens VanAndt, who is an archaeology professor at a small town university in Massachusetts in 1906. He lives in a hotel owned by the overbearing Miss Preussler. One day, Mogens’ old nemesis Jonathan Graves shows up and offers him a job in San Francisco. Something is definitely off and Jonathan is strangely eerie but to escape country-life - and Miss Preussler - Mogens reluctantly agrees. Only when he arrives in San Francisco, Mogens learns about Jonathan’s stunning discovery: a 5000-year-old, underground Egyptian temple. In California.
I would describe the story as H.P. LOVECRAFT meets PET SEMATARY. You definitely feel the cosmic horror, the fear of the unknown here. Hohlbein does an excellent job describing the ordeal Mogens goes through and I couldn’t help but root for him.
While the premise is intriguing, Anubis has several weaknesses. One of them is that it reads a bit dated. There is (likely unintentional on part of the author) sexism and fatphobia that didn’t even fly back in 2004 when ANUBIS was first published, let alone today. It almost feels like a 80s or 90s book, also because the plot is constructed in an old-fashioned way. If you enjoy reading classic sci-fi and fantasy, you probably won’t mind too much.
ANUBIS never gets boring though. While the book is long and could have been shorter, I never felt like the story dragged. I was thoroughly entertained throughout and burned through all 700+ pages in just 2 days. Really don’t understand why some of the other reviewers say they found the book boring - I was hooked by the story. That being said, the story FELT like it lacked focus at times and there were too many fantastical elements that were mixed together. It did all come together in the end and made sense, but for a while it felt like a big sci-fi/fantasy-mix-and-(don’t)-match.
There is good humor and especially Miss Preussler provides great comic relief. She is easily my favourite character and more likeable than our protagonist Mogens who is quite bland (but therefore makes for a great reader-insert character).
Some of the scene transitions are a bit too “jumpy” and come without transition sentences, which I found a bit jarring. A lot of the locations were not described in enough detail for me to properly visualise.
The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I had hoped. While the main mystery is sufficiently resolved, the last quarter of the story wasn’t as climactic as one would hope. The grand finale is missing. I also still have questions about two of the main characters that were just not addresses, i.e. certain things were foreshadowed but nothing ever came of it. I just expected more from the ending.
There are also a number of factual errors in the book that might not bother the casual reader, but that definitely pulled me out of the story: the train ride from Boston to San Francisco takes a single day here. TODAY, when we have high speed trains, such a journey would have taken several days and I don’t know how long in 1906. It is also indicated that scientists back then knew of a planet in the Sirius system - again, even in 2020 we have no indication that such a planet exists. But I’m being nit-picky here.

Liczyłam na coś w stylu filmu Mumia, który bardzo lubię. Dobrze się zapowiadało, naprawdę. Myślałam, że trafiła na książkę z bardzo długim wstępem, ale jak już przez to przebrnę to będzie mumia, akcja, ucieczka, trochę czarów, może romans i szczęśliwy powrót do domu.
Jednakże akcja się nie pojawiała. Nie pojawiała się po 300 stronach, ani 400, ani nawet po 500. Niby interesowało mnie zakończenie, co się tam okaże, co tak naprawdę siedzi w tych ruinach podziemnych, kim lub czym jest doktor Graves, ale z drugiej strony dłużyło mi się to i dużo rzeczy mnie w tej książce nie interesowało. Mogłabym spokojnie pomijać po kilka kartek i niczego ważnego bym nie ominęła.
Coś zaczęło się dziać mniej więcej po stronie 550-600. Na dosłownie 50 stronach umieszczono całe rozwinięcie sprawy. I szczerze? Nie myślałam, że pójdzie to w tym kierunku i że można to połączyć ze starożytnym Egiptem, bogami Egiptu i wykopaliskami o Egipcie. Trochę się zawiodłam. Było to niby bardziej skaplikowane niż sama mumia, ale chyba z mumii bardziej bym się ucieszyła. Liczyłam na fantastyke, a dostałam sci-fi.
Od strony technicznej wyglądało to dobrze, jakbym naprawdę czytała o pracy archeologów, profesorów i nie było to zbyt przytłaczające. Książka po prostu była zbyt długa i zbyt wolno się rozwijała akcja.
Plusem jest nasza drużyna poszukiwaczy, która zrodziła się z czystego przypadku. Mianowicie profesor, doktor, jego pomocnik oraz gospodynia. Ich wspólne relacje i odzywki potrafiły mnie rozbawić do łez.
Zakończenie nie było niczym odkrywczym, ale też jakoś specjalnie mnie nie zawiodło. Było po prostu okej.

Eigentlich hat alles gestimmt - ich habe gerade in jüngeren Jahren viele Bücher von Wolfgang Hohlbein gelesen und hatte mich sehr auf das Buch gefreut. Auch thematisch hatte mich die Geschichte sofort, da ich mich seit langem für alles interessiere, was auch nur im Entferntesten zu tun hat mit Ägypten. Und doch muss ich gestehen war "Anubis" das bisher schlechteste Buch, das ich in diesem Jahr gelesen, bzw. gehört habe.
Die Geschichte wirkt komplett konstruiert, so dass ich mich ständig gefragt habe, ob all seine Bücher so geschrieben sind und ich vor zwanzig Jahren einfach noch nicht so viel Erfahrung hatte. Die Spannung fehlt in meinen Augen auch, da selbst die Passagen, die spannend sein müssten, irgendwie künstlich wirken und was mich wirklich am meisten geärgert hat war der Protagonist. Am liebsten hätte ich ihn ausgetauscht.
Mehr kann ich leider zu diesem Buch nicht mehr sagen - ich bin über alle Maßen enttäuscht.

Die Geschichte hat Struktur und ist stimmig geschrieben. Vor allem ist David Nathan auch ein großartiger Sprecher, der die Sätze nicht nur richtig betonen, sondern auch Spannung erzeugen kann. Andere Sprecher, wie etwa bei Hohlbeins Armageddon, scheinen oft erst mitten im Satz zu verstehen, was sie eigentlich erzählen wollen und machen deshalb immer wieder kleine Betonungsfehler.

I found myself sometimes siding with the "Ungeheuer" and with Graves. I thought that the characters were well detailed, but they really got on my nerves toward the end, as they just seemed way too daft for adventurers. I mean, after everything they had seen up to that point, what would possess them to continue to "not believe" all of it was happening to them?
Still, great book. I'm really glad I have Book Two on my Kindle to get into. The first book in hardback is really a doorstop!

Wer H.P.Lovecraft mag sollte diese Buch schon mal lesen.
Am Anfang hat man noch diesen eisigen Schauer der einem den Rücken hinunterläuft.
Gegen Ende empfand ich eher Neugierde und Abenteuerlust.
Aber der Mythos ist doch recht greifbar vorhanden. Doch war der Schrecken etwas zu milde. Nach meinem Empfinden jedenfalls.
Ich würde ja sagen das es das Geld wert ist. (Ist es auch)
Aber ich habe es aus dem Papiermüll gefischt da meine ehemalige Mitbewohnerin es weg werfen wollte.

„Anubis“ ist vielleicht nicht so ganz der passende Titel und stellenweise zäh, dennoch schrieb der Autor eine recht spannende Handlung rund um die Themen Archäologie und Besessenheit. Fazit: Ein Buch mit so einigen Höhepunkten, lebendigen Figuren und einer gut vorstellbar unterirdischen Welt, das nur leider unvollständig abgeschlossen zu sein scheint.

Quite an unimpressive novel. Characters are not very interesting and their constant and repetitive quarrels get annoying fast. In the end you're just waiting for the mystery behind the gate but what happened when they finally got there also failed to impress me. Also much too long considering such a standard, uninspired paleoastronautic story.

Kurzweilig und man kann es lesen, allerdings lieblos runtergeschrieben wie die meisten von Hohlbeins neueren "Werken". Für Fans ägyptischer Mythologie mit Tendenz zum Fantasy zu empfehlen, ansonsten Finger weg!

Das Buch war an vielen Stellen zu langatmig und ist in einem etwas unangenehmen Stil mit zu vielen Wiederholungen geschrieben. Man hätte da deutlich kürzen können. Das Ende ist außerdem eher unbefriedigend, zu viel wird nicht aufgelöst.

Este o carte foarte interesanta. Intr-adevar, primele 100 de pagini sunt greu de parcurs, dar daca reusiti sa depasiti acest obstacol, restul cartii este mult mai usor de citit. Este o carte in care actiunea se impleteste cu descrierea si zbuciumul launtric al personajului principal.

It's a pretty good, gripping novel. I enjoyed it, but it has some gaps I am not pleased with. It left me with a lot of question and wanting more

Abgebrochen kurz vor Ende. Es war einfach zu langweilig und langatmig. Interessiert einen auch gar nicht wie es aus geht. Und an die Charaktere kommt man sowieso nicht ran!

Das Buch hat mir leider gar nicht gefallen. Die Geschichte war wirklich merkwürdig, ich kann gar nicht festmachen woran aber sie hat mir nicht gefallen. Es gab ein paar wenige gute Momente, deshalb noch nett gemeinte 2 Sterne aber mehr geht nicht. Ich hoffe nicht alle Werke von Hohlbein sind so konfus und unstimmig geschrieben denn dann werden seine Bücher und ich definitiv keine Freunde...
