Growing up in an abusive home, this real life and death struggle shares how he endured evil antics at the hands of a tyrant family member. Faith over fear despite tough odds is a powerful theme in this gut wrenching saga, which will have readers rooting for the young boy and his siblings until the never -bitter end.
This story hits close to home. It takes great strength to write out the abuse one goes through. Proves that it's so hard to get out of a vicious circle. Great read!!
This book was great! The author is very creative with words. When telling the story, he knows how to build and crescendo using descriptive phrases, building as he weaves his tale.
This book was very painful to read - I had to take my time with it and process everything that was happening. It’s a story that follows a little boy that grows up in a very, very abusive household, with a tyrannical step father and a mother that is afraid of leaving with her kids, so they all suffer for years and years. We watch this little boy grow up and become stronger, fall in love and find his passion, all while struggling at home, being beaten and verbally abused. I liked the book, it was very eye-opening and heartbreaking, but I know that there are so many people out there who are going through what this family was going.
I recently had the privilege of reading "2442 Steps To Crazy - The Beginning" by D. Paul Fleming, and I was profoundly moved by this powerful true story of survival. From the very first page, I was captivated by the author's gripping first-person narrative, which skillfully portrays the harrowing journey of a young boy growing up in an abusive environment.
The protagonist's struggle against a tyrant-like stepfather and a mother who turns a blind eye is heart-wrenching. As I immersed myself in the story, I couldn't help but feel deeply connected to the young boy, rooting for him in his darkest moments and yearning to offer him solace and support. The raw emotions and resilience depicted throughout the book are nothing short of remarkable.
What truly struck me was the character's unwavering determination to overcome his circumstances. Despite facing unimaginable trauma, he finds the strength within himself to survive and rise above his challenging upbringing. It was awe-inspiring to witness his growth, from losing faith in the system to learning how to confront his abuser and other bullies. His journey serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
"2442 Steps To Crazy" delivers a powerful message about resilience and the innate ability of individuals to find hope even in the darkest of times. It prompts readers to reflect on their own perceptions of resilience and the immense strength that lies within us. The book's thought-provoking themes resonate deeply, leaving a lasting impact on both readers and society as a whole.
If you're searching for a book that will tug at your heartstrings, challenge your understanding of resilience, and leave you contemplating the extraordinary power of the human spirit, I wholeheartedly recommend "2442 Steps To Crazy - The Beginning." It is an emotionally gripping read that will inspire and stay with you long after you've turned the last page.
A difficult subject matter to read, but this book feels real. This young man allowed himself to escape a cycle of abuse. He kept the faith that life can and does get better. My good friend Don F recommended this book. You never really know what another person carries in their heart.
The novel is billed as based on a true story which, assuming the author did overcome such a traumatic childhood, is a testament to focus, perseverance, and guts. This story will anger you and set your emotions on high alert. Highly recommend.
This is a book is written in first person narrative style where the narrator is a boy who grows up in an abusive background. Being abused by a tyrant-like stepfather and a mother who turns a blind eye just because she needs to secure her marriage , the boy strives a lot to survive without getting lost. From suffering to confronting, the character grows up but the ending is ambiguous. Either way , the book delivers a set of strong messages to the readers and the society.
The boy addresses his stepfather as " Crazy ". When the boy was in a very young age he loses faith upon law and police as Crazy always finds a way to fool the law. Nevertheless he learns to liberate against Crazy's craziness as the years pass by. He learns to confront other bullies and finds a new goal in life despite the abusive background. There were times I badly needed to go hug the boy and whisper that everything will be alright. Apart from the mc , I loved the characters; the coach , the aunt and his friend.
I recommend this book to anyone who is strong enough to read a jarring story.
This was such a good read. It was such a difficult read in the sense that it touched upon a lot of heavy topics and it really made me feel sorry for the narrator and I wanted to protect him from everything. This book will definitely make you feel a lot of emotions and also show you the reality that some people live through unfortunately. The abuse that the narrator and his family go through is horrifying and at the start of the book I told myself what did I get myself into. However, as the story starts to unfold we see the narrator grow up and anyone with a heart will root for him so that he no longer has to endure all that pain.
I cannot say that this was an easy book to read- This is true story book about trauma and boy did it make me feel so many emotions- The young boy in this book is being abused by his step-father and the saddest part was that his mother just ignored and turned a blind eye to it all for the sake of her marriage.. The story although painful does emit light for the boy who does find spirituality and guidance- The take aways from the book are the shining moments- Trauma does not have to dictate that you are meant to have a terrible life- The story is a beautiful one of how you can take the trauma and the pain and overcome and thrive and do good not just for yourself but for others.. I was blown away by this story- now again it was hard to read but something I feel that is worth sharing and recommending to be read.. The author did such an amazing job of showing bravery and strength in the boy- strength to when enough was enough and to walk away and be a better person and do better.. it brought me to tears knowing he survived this and relief that he did...
A sad state of affairs when the poor choices of a mother create a living hell for her children. Then they, in turn, pass that legacy of dysfunction on to their family. At some point it has to stop, but who will have the strength to finally break the pattern? And, will it be too late for them?
This story of the soul-crushing abuse suffered by a young man at the hands of his sadistic, alcoholic stepfather, robbing him and his siblings of a happy life will break your heart. Can he end the cycle, and at what cost? You won't want to put this one down.
What an amazing read. I need more! I hope there is a book two in the works. Your story is horrifying, your book is incredibly written and you took us all along with you. It's been a long time since I read anything that invoked so many strong feelings. Wow. That's all I can say.
This was a difficult read for me. But as difficult as it was, it’s important to read and share those stories! This is a true story involving child abuse and the power of faith. I’m not a very faithful person but I felt that power in this story. Like below the title says, this is just the beginning and I’m looking forward to the next book. Also, I rlly liked the bookmark I got with this!
This was a different read for me. A lot of violence but I still kept reading to see what would happen to the one boy in the family. I saw after I finished that this was a continued story so I do want to read the next one to see what happens.
Although I really do feel so much empathy over all the author and his siblings suffered at the hands of "Crazy", I didn't like the over all feeling of darkness and repetitive violence in the book! I am a very peace loving, no drama kind of person who doesn't even like mild horror movies and especially detests abuse of any kind. However, I have always had an interest in learning about what makes people " tick" and how the mind works. I have degrees in psychology and mental health and I like reading memoirs, non fiction and oddly, even some true crime. Still, this book has a different feeling to it for me. Maybe it's the dark spiritual undertones as well as the psychic visions the author seems to entertain and that also permeate several rooms of one house they lived in. Aside from that, I found myself disliking the author's mother despite her also being a victim. How could any mother be so weak, so cowardly that they basically "throw their kids under the bus", sacrifice them in order to continue living with a demon? How pathetic to be so insecure and starved for love that you are willing to watch your children starve, be brutalized, living in terror, having bones broken, psychologically abused, beaten down and be denied a childhood all so you, the adult parent can get your needs met? That is inexcusable. I can understand she was afraid, she felt her options were limited and felt unable to cope but if SHE felt it to that degree, she needs to think about what her kids felt and then add to that their mother's betrayal!
The book is an enthralling read about a boy who survives despite horrific child abuse. It's a real-life story that depicts how trauma can shape a person.
The story begins with the child narrator finding and hiding in a desolate place to save himself from his stepfather, whom he often called Crazy. The boy was punished for leaving the milk on the table instead of putting it in the fridge. He has to work on fields, eat the remaining unhealthy food, and walk like a duck on the field as punishment. That's true! Often, for the simplest of mistakes, he was punished ruthlessly until one day the child decided and took complete charge over his life. That one incident changed his path in life. Why did Crazy hate the child so much❓How would the child escape Crazy's cage❓Who is the girl the child keeps seeing❓
The book will make you go bananas. The story is a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists, thrills, drama, and shocking turns. The writing style is elegant. The story is narrated by the child in first person, which is intriguing. The child's terror is described excellently.
The characters are well built and minutely carved. The child's character is quite interesting, while his brother is also cute. The climax was well executed and will surely blow the reader's mind.
Overall, it’s an excellent read that you will surely enjoy.
This is a uniquely titled, emotionally charged story based on true events, in which the protagonist, turns out to survive and overcome a childhood full of dread and cruelty. Displaying true grit, with faith that life will be better one day, in an era when harsh discipline was normal, a cruel family member, titled CRAZY made life hell for the young narrator, his siblings and mother.
The book is phenomenal, it's painful to read and it's definitely worth recommendation. It's a chilling real life story of a man's journey toward adulthood, one who keeps his faith, fights for his life and never loses faith, even with a highly dysfunctional family and domestic violence. The book talks about important social issues and the perseverance the character shows in hard times.
It's so wonderfully written that I kept turning pages and lost the track of time while reading it. It's a different and difficult read indeed. It's really an impactful read that tells us the story of a young guy that breaks the cycle of abuse and comes out strong! The thing is, we really do not know what the other person goes through everyday, and it's really a great feeling to be able to read the story in the words of Mr. D. Paul Fleming. I'd love to read more from the author.
The author is a 100% disabled US Navy veteran who is now a veteran support advocate, a public and motivational speaker, a strong willed life coach and business consultant.
🫀Many of us are not aware of the concept of toxic and dysfunctional family, it’s been proved that more than 50 percent of a human’s trauma and trust issues or insecurities are due to their family or bad childhood! This book truly touches the different dynamics of being in a dysfunctional family which is really dysfunctional I mean, the place which is supposed to protect you is probably hurting you and nothing could be more bad!
The protagonist is shattered by the circumstances but is still trying to walk towards light, the book also reminds me of that there is light at the end of every dark tunnel, it’s just some tunnels are longer than the others but they eventually ends!
A story of courage despite all the odds and the endurance of not giving up on willing for a better life they deserve, it’s definitely a very deep story and I would say it’s not exactly meant for every other reader but by that I would like to mention that it’s a life changing read which could be relatable to lot of us and also will make many feel that they are not alone and that there is still hope!
A story of hope that really felt dear to me, especially after 100 pages, I was truly engrossed! A beautiful book filled with many lessons yet a story which will teach many the real meaning of traumas and struggles!
This book. Wow. Just wow. It was equal parts hard to read and wanting to keep reading. My heart broke for the main character over and over again. His step "father" aka Crazy, beat him, his brother, and his mother. Sometimes it was a physical beating, sometimes a mental one. The awful things that were said to him. To keep his mind off of these things, he often counted steps. 2442 was the number of steps to his house from his high school.
This book dove into the most horrible beatings, but mixed in spirits that helped him survive some of the worst. There are 2 spirits in particular that kept showing up when something really bad would happen, and whisper into his ear about how strong he was and how he would get through this.
This book makes you remember that you have no idea what is going on at home with somebody. The main character learned earlier on not to tell teachers, principals, and cops what actually happens because Crazy kept getting away with it. I wanted to go into this book and help this poor kid and his family. Luckily there were a few people in his life that could see what was happening and offered help by giving extra food, clothes, and lent an ear whenever he wanted to talk.
I always find it difficult to rate and review stories based on true events. I feel like I don't have the right to judge someone's experiences. But at the same time, I also feel grateful to be a part of their journey, even if it's for a few hours.
This book is not an easy one. I felt like I had a stone in my stomach the whole time I was reading it. At the same time, I was not able to put it down.
The amount of abuse and trauma the narrator has gone through is unimaginable. This is a story of a boy who endured years of physical and verbal abuse at the hands of his stepfather. He couldn't even turn to his mother to get out of that hell because she was too afraid to leave her husband and face the consequences.
But at the same time, this is a story of faith. How the boy is able to hope for a better future despite his horrible present. It gives you hope too as a reader.
Powerful~Soul Inspiring Book I'm in Awe of this book ~~ It takes courage to put your story out there ~ Much Respect!! This book will have triggers for those who have not worked on healing their own childhood trauma. Chapters 8 & 9 had tears rolling down my face, Chapter 11, I was rooting for you! Bullies/Takers will keep taking until you set a boundary. I like how you see/describe your spiritual team and how they helped you. Crazy~ I can't post those words here that I have for him. Your Mother~ The cycle continued with her; she didn't break it. Maybe it was part of her soul contract...who knows
This book is a significant reminder to be kind to everyone; you never know what battles they are fighting.
This book is about a very powerful journey. Looking forward to book 2.
2442 Steps To Crazy is a captivating and emotionally gripping true story. The author's raw and honest account of growing up in an abusive home and surviving through the most horrific family dynamics is both haunting and inspiring.
The author's message that faith can overcome fear, even in the most challenging circumstances, is a powerful theme throughout the book. It's a story of hope, perseverance, and the strength of the human spirit. I found myself rooting for the young boy (and his siblings) until the very end, as he battled through his struggles and emerged stronger on the other side.
I have to say, this was an incredibly difficult read for me. With all the love I have for my own children, I can’t fathom anyone treating a child as badly as the main character was treated. And to know that his struggles were real made it that much harder. But, that aside, I have to commend the author for his bravery - both in his experiences and in his ability to share his trauma with the world. It’s a feat I don’t think many could accomplish with as much skill and grace as he has embodied. Hats off to him! It was truly an honor to read this story.
From start to finish, I was sucked in to 2442 Steps To Crazy and experienced so many different emotional states. This poor boy suffers a lot of extreme abuse at the hands of his stepfather, who he calls Crazy, and it was terrifying and heartbreaking, but this was also so much more than a story about suffering. It's about hope and survival. If you enjoy gripping stories you can't stop reading that also offer some light in the darkness, then this is a great read that I highly recommend to you.
An unfortunate mix of trauma and abuse, poverty and generational hurts told from the point of view of one son who bore the brunt of the suffering. However, this book is not without hope or courage. There is an underlying theme of good versus evil and those who have spiritual discernment will pick up on it.
📌 This is the story of one boy guided by faith in search of an answer to a better life within a dysfunctional family. This is the story of a man who was horrifically abused as a child. The story of someone who has known evil and felt it on his skin. His story shows readers how to harness optimism against all odds. It shows how to be faithful in times of despair when a cruel family member wants to crush you down.
📌 The chief message of the book is this: "Keep the faith- Keep moving forward" Keep your faith alive even when life goes against you. Everything is temporary, even the things that terrify us.
🤔 My thoughts on this book
✍️ If I had to capture the best hallmark of this book in just one word, it would have to be the word gripping. Yes, this book is a really absorbing story. It grabs your attention from the start and never fails to keep it alive until the end.
📌 I couldn't help but be hooked the whole time reading it. Each chapter is filled with sudden twists, unexpected events, and breathtaking moments. I started the book thinking that I would enjoy it typically, but instead, I was thrown into it.
📌 I even read 70 pages in one go and felt anger bottling up as I kept reading about what Crazy did to a child. I can undoubtedly say that this true story has been written super engagingly.
Why should you read it❓
Because it will demonstrate that someone can harness optimism in hard times. It is also a relatable story many people experienced in their childhood. Child abuse is a horrific phenomenon, and this book makes you successfully imagine how it would feel to go through child abuse. It feels like a rollercoaster of negative emotions (how I felt reading the book)

This was such a heartbreaking read. The fact that it’s based on true events was even more shocking. I felt so bad for the protagonist and just wanted to reach through the pages and take him somewhere safe. Reading about trauma and abuse inflicted on children always hurts me the hardest. I loved how he had such strong faith in the face of all of his adversity. He never let what was happening define him and take over. I know we read a lot about abused children become abusers as adults and I was glad to see he didn’t let that happen to him! Overall, this was a gritty and tough read but definitely inspiring and so important!

This was a very difficult and emotional read. It's the story of a boy who grows up in a home where his step father physically and emotionally abuses him and his mother turns a blind eye in order to keep her marriage together.
There were a myriad of emotions that went through me while reading this book, rage towards the "Crazy" (this is the name the boy calls his stepfather) stepfather for his abuse of this helpless boy, anger and disbelief at the apathy and absolute criminal neglect of his mother for allowing the abuse and utter despair and sympathy for the brave boy who endures and trys to protect his siblings from Crazy's abuse for years.
Though he endures this horrific abuse, it gives the boy incredible strength and courage to confront the bullies outside of his home. He also never loses faith and hope that one day, he and his siblings will overcome and soar.
The boy in this story is the author and it is his first person true narrative of his life - but it is only the beginning..
