Different and Dark
Although I really do feel so much empathy over all the author and his siblings suffered at the hands of "Crazy", I didn't like the over all feeling of darkness and repetitive violence in the book! I am a very peace loving, no drama kind of person who doesn't even like mild horror movies and especially detests abuse of any kind. However, I have always had an interest in learning about what makes people " tick" and how the mind works. I have degrees in psychology and mental health and I like reading memoirs, non fiction and oddly, even some true crime. Still, this book has a different feeling to it for me. Maybe it's the dark spiritual undertones as well as the psychic visions the author seems to entertain and that also permeate several rooms of one house they lived in.
Aside from that, I found myself disliking the author's mother despite her also being a victim. How could any mother be so weak, so cowardly that they basically "throw their kids under the bus", sacrifice them in order to continue living with a demon? How pathetic to be so insecure and starved for love that you are willing to watch your children starve, be brutalized, living in terror, having bones broken, psychologically abused, beaten down and be denied a childhood all so you, the adult parent can get your needs met? That is inexcusable. I can understand she was afraid, she felt her options were limited and felt unable to cope but if SHE felt it to that degree, she needs to think about what her kids felt and then add to that their mother's betrayal!
