Wie de woorden van Broeder Roger leest, kan snel tot de conclusie komen dat het een nogal naïeve man was. Het was iemand die nog kan geloven in de goedheid van de mens, omdat hij nog niet oog in oog heeft gestaan met zijn slechtheid.

Deze conclusie (die ikzelf aan het begin ook neigde te maken) is erg dom en getuigt van een cynisme dat zelf naïef is, omdat het zijn ogen sluit voor andere visies op hoe de wereld werkt. Broeder Roger was welbekend met het leed in de wereld, en richtte zijn leven op het troosten van de zij die leden. Hij ging het niet uit de weg, waar veel cynici dat wel doen, maar wilde erin delen. Dat maakt het verhaal van Taizé zo inspirerend. Het is geen ivoren toren, weg van het menselijk leed, maar een nederige samenleving van vredig verzet tegen het onrecht.

Dit boek probeert regelmatig Broeder Roger volledig foutloos te maken, waar ik me niet helemaal comfortabel bij voel. Roger zou hetzelfde gevonden hebben, aangezien zijn bescheidenheid en het besef van zijn eigen slechte kanten duidelijk geuit zijn in citaten. Toch is het een goede samenvatting van waar Taizé voor staat.

Kathryn Spink gives a solid introduction to the phenomenon of Taize by way of a portrait of the monastic community's founding father, Brother Roger. The narrative sometimes becomes bogged down in lists of church officials and places the Brothers of Taize have visited, and Spink's language tends toward the overly reverential at times. But the fact of the matter is that Brother Roger was a truly remarkable man, one deserving of reverence if any human being is, and the book is full of his gentle spirit, his deep spiritual insight, and his universal heart. Recommended for anyone who would like to learn more about Taize - but truly the best introduction I can imagine, and the clearest glimpse into the heart of Brother Roger's vision, is to take part in a Taize prayer.
